(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 160) udyōgamu udyōgamu. [Skt.] n. An attempt, endeavour, undertaking; enterprise, exertion; activity. యత్నము. a profession, employment, occupation, calling, mission, office or situation; ఉద్యోగము చేయు to excercise an office. ఉద్యోగస్థుడు or ఉద్యోగి udyōgasthuḍu n. An officer, a functionary. ఉద్యోగించు udyōginṭsu. v. t. To undertake, set to do, to turn one's mind to: to apply oneself to యత్నించు.

(p. 167) umēḍu or ఉమేజు umēdu. [H.] n. Hope. ఆశ, కోరిక. ఉమేదు చేయు to live in hope, to be a hanger on, as an expectant. ఉమేదువారి umēdu-vāri. n. Expectancy, waiting for an employment. Volunteer ing for employment. ఆశించుకొని యుండడము, ఉద్యోగమునకై కనిపెట్టుకొని యుండడము. ఉమేదువారు umēdu-vāru. n. A candidate for employment, a volunteer, an apprentice.

(p. 270) kāni or గాని kāni. [Tel.] (conj. denoting an alternative.) But, either, or, except, unless. And not, nor, Rather, Before. జాజియొక్కటియెకాని సకలకుసమ విసరసంపదచేనొప్పె వసుధయెల్ల , విరహణియెకానిధరణిపై వివిధజనులు సంతసములొందజేసె వసంతవేళ.' Sunandā Parinyam, iv. 22. 'ఆలలు మగనిమాట కడ్డంబు వచ్చెనా ఆలలుకాదది వానివ్రాలుకాని.' (Vēma.) ఇంతేకాని నేనేమెరుగను I know nothing but this. ఇదియేమోకాని I cannot tell what this may be. అదిగాని యిదిగాని either that or this. ఆపని పది దినములకుగాని కాదు that work cannot be finished in less than ten days. రేపుగాని రాడు he will not come here before to-morrow. ఉద్యోగము చిక్కుననే అపేక్ష ఉంటేగాని నేను అక్కడ ఉండను I would not have remained there had I not hoped to gain employment. ఇది అతని చేతగాని మరి యొకనిచేతకాదు he alone can do it, no one else can. ఎల్లవిధముల నిను వధియించిగాని పురికి నురుగముగావున for we will not return without slaying thee. అతడు వస్తేనేగాని యీపని కానేరదు unless he comes we cannot effect this. కాని or కానీ (for కానిమ్ము) imp. verb denoting assent. Let it be done. Be it so. Never mind. Very well. ఆ పని ముందరకానీ let that be done first. కానీ కానీ నీ కావరమణతు very well, I will crush your pride.

(p. 661) nilcu or నిలుచు niluṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To stand. To remain, exist, last, live. continue. To stay, stop, halt. నిలిచిపోవు. To be still or quiet, as a fluid in a vessel. To be firm or steadfast. To bear, be patient, restrain one's feelings. To be repressed, allayed, slackened. వాని మాట నిలిచినది he kept his word. నిలిచికురియదు it does not rain steadily. ఆ బడి నిలిచిపోయినది the school is now closed. పని నిలిచిపోయినది the work has stopped. M. XII. v. 459. నిలుపాటి or నిలువుపాటి long, పొడుగైన. నిలువబెట్టు to set up , erect. నిలువతీయు to set one on his legs. నిలుచుండు or నిల్చుండు niluṭs-unḍu. (నిలిచి+ఉండు.) v. n. To remain standing, to continue to stand. నిలుచుండు. నిలుడుకొ Same as నిలుచుండు. నిల used for నిలువ. నిలబడు, నిలువబడు or నిల్వబడు nila-baḍu. v. n. To stand. నిలుచుండు. To be stopped. అడ్డుపడు. To be set up, ప్రతిష్ఠతమగు. నిలక, నిలకడ, నిలుకడ or నిల్కడ nilaka. n. Standing; steadiness, constancy, firmness. స్థైర్యము. ఈ యేరు నిలక యివ్వదు I cannot keep my footing in the current. కాలు నిలకడచేసికొను to gain a firm footing నిలకడయిన ఉద్యోగము permanent (not acting) employement. నిలుకడగానుండే firm. నిలితము nilitamu. n. Delay: endurance, (Vizag.) నిలువెడుఎత్తు or నిలువుఎత్తు niluveḍu-y-ettu. n. A fathom high, lit: one man's stature. నిలుపు nitupu. v. a. To cause to stand, నిలువబెట్టు. To fix, to set up, to place, to erect, ప్రతిష్ఠించు. To stay, restrain, interrupt, repress, అడ్డగించు. To support, maintain, keep firm, establish, స్థిరపడు. To retain, keep back, reserve, నిలిపిఉంచు. To set aside, exclude. నిలుపు n. Standing, a halt, &c. నిలుచుట, ఉండుట. అది నిలుపుగానున్నది it is suspended or in abeyance. నిలుపుచేసినారు they stopped the work, &c. detained (me) &c. నిలుపు or నిల్పు nilupu. adj. That which stops. నిలుపునది. Firm, స్థిరమైన. నిలుపోవు nilup-ōpu. (నిలుపు+ఓపు.) v. n. To endure, to bear, to put up with, ఓర్చు. సహించు. నిలుపుదల nilupu-dala. n. Stopping. suspension. నిలువ or నిల్వ niluva. n. A remainder, something that is left over, శేషము, నిలిచియున్న వస్తువు. నిలువరి niluv-ari. adj. Steadfast. n. A steady man. నిలువు niluvu. n. Standing. నిలుచుట. Stature, height, ఎత్తు. A fathom or a man's height, మనిషి ఎత్తు. Form, shape, figure, ఆకృతి. A storey, మీది అంతస్తు. The standing crop. మూడు నిలుపుల నీళ్లు water three fathoms deep. వాని నిలువెల్లా విషము he is a villain from head to foot. నానిలువెల్లదోచుకొన్నారు they fleeced me or stripped me. వానికి నిలువుగుడ్లు పడినవి his eyes are set, he is dying. నిలువాటి, i.e., నిలువుపాటి standing, erected. నిలువు adj. Upright, standing, High, tall. నిలువుచెంబు a cup with upright sides, a mug. నిలువుఅంచనా reckoning upon the standing crop. నిలువుటద్దము niluvu-ṭ-addamu. n. A pier glass, a full length mirror. నిలువుకొలువు or నిలువుజీతము service in which one has to stand up always and is not allowed to sit. నిలుచుండిచేయు సేవ. నిలువుకాళ్లు stilts. నిలవరము, నిలువరము or నిల్వరము nilava-ramu. n. Firmness, steadfastness. The truth, certainity. A deposit, money lodged. adj. True, certain, fixed, firm, stable, sure, స్థిరమైన. నిలవరించు, నిలువరించు or నిల్వరించు nilavarinṭsu. v. n. To stand firmly. చలింపకనిలుచు. v. a. To cause to stand firmly. చలింపకనిలువు. To stop, to cause to halt; to support, to manage, to sustain.

(p. 704) padamu padamu. [Skt.] n. A foot. పాదము. అడుగు. A footstep, the mark of a foot, పాదచిహ్నము. A word or a phrase, శబ్దము. An article, thing, వస్తువు. Preservation, defence, రక్షణము. A place, site, స్థానము. Rank, station, degree. ఉద్యోగము. An attempt, ప్రయత్నము. Cunning, కపటము. A line of a stanza or song, పద్యపాదము. పదభ్రష్టుడు he who is degraded. 'మనసి జరథపదాంజనకణికలు.' A. v. 124. టీ రథపద, బండికండ్లయొక్క. పరమపదము parama-padamu. n. Lit: the best place, i.e., Heaven. పదగుడు or పద్గుడు padaguḍu. n. A foot soldier, కాలిబంటు పదచాళి padaṭsāḷi. n. A kind of dance. నాట్యభేదము. పడచ్ఛేదము padach-chhēdamu. n. Dividing or separating the words of a sentence from each other. The order in which words are construed. Analysis. పదతలము pada-talamu. n. The foot.

(p. 948) madamu madamu. [Skt.] n. Fat, కొవ్వు. Pride, arrogance, lust, frenzy, madness. గర్వము. Musk, కస్తూరి. మదాంధతి the blindness of pride, haughtiness. విద్యామదము the pride of learning. ధనమదము the pride of wealth. ధనదాంధుడు he who is blinded by riches. కులమదము the pride of caste or birth. ఉద్యోగమదము the pride of office. రూపమదము the pride of beauty. యౌవన మదము the pride of youth. అన్నమదము the pride of plenty. స్త్రీమదము the pride of passion. మదాలస indolent, heavy as with tipsiness or lust. అతని మదమణిగినది his lustful arrogance has gone, he has sown his wild oats. adj. Proud. మదగజము an elephant in rut. 'మదవైరిద్విపసింహముర్తి.' G. viii. 4. మదించు madinṭsu. v. n. To become fat, proud, or arrogant, to be in rut. కొవ్వు, అహంకరించు, మత్తిలు. మదపుటేనుడు madapu-ṭ-ēnugu. n. An elephant in rut. (The ట is inserted to prevent elision.) మదమడచు madam-aḍaṭsu. v. n. To put down pride, to kill. చంపు. మడవతి madavati. n. A wanton woman. మదావళము, మదహస్తి, మదహత్తి or మదకలము madāvaḷamu. n. An elephant in its prime.

(p. 1053) yatnamu yatnamu. [Skt.] n. An effort, excrtion, endeavour; a method, measure, step, plan, scheme, intention, design, purpose. ౛తనము, ఉద్యోగము, కడక, ఉపాయము. దైవయత్నము a decree or interposition of Providence, the finger of God. యత్నించు or యత్నపడు yatninṭsu. v. n. To endeavour, attempt, try, intend, design, ప్రయత్నముచేయు. యత్నపడిఉన్నాడు he intends or is about to do it. See ప్రయత్నము.

(p. 1075) rāyasamu rāyasamu. [for Skt. రాజసము.] n. Authority. Clerkship, secretaryship. జాబులువ్రాయు ఉద్యోగము. రాయసగాడు rāyasa-gāḍu. n. A secretary.౛ాబులు వ్రాయువాడు.

(p. 1115) laukikamu laukikamu. [Skt. from లోకము.] (Vulgarly, లౌకికము.) n. Business, worldly affairs. ఉద్యోగము, లోకవ్యాపారము. అతనికి ఇప్పుడు లౌకికము లేదు he is now unemployed. adj. Secular, mundane, worldly, human, what prevails amongst men or is familiar to mankind. ప్రపంచసంబంధమైన. M. XIII. v. 192. లౌకికుడు laukikuḍu. (vulgarly, లౌకీకుడు) n. A layman, a secular Brahmin, a man of the world. ఉద్యోగస్థుడు. నేను విశేష లౌకీకుడనుగాను I am not a man of the world.

(p. 1133) vargamu vargamu. [Skt.] n. A class or tribe, a group or set of things, the whole group or body of a number of similar things. సజాతీయసమూహము. A chapter, అధ్యాయము. భూవర్గము the chapter regarding the earth. కవర్గము the class of guttural letters. త్రివర్గము a class of three (objects, as love, duty, and wealth.) ఆప్త వర్గము a body of friends, a band of allies. తమపోష్యవర్గములో నున్నానుగనుక as I am one among the number of your dependants. అరిషడ్వర్గము the six classes of foes to good, i.e., the six passions, కామక్రోధ లోభ మోహమదమాత్సర్యములు, desire, wrath, covetousness, lust, arrogance, and envy. కట్టువర్గము a dress, or suit of clothes. వర్గావర్గి vargā-vargi. [Mahr.] n. Exchange, transfer, income, resources. వచ్చుబడి. వర్గావర్గీచేయు vargā-vargī-chēyu. v. a. To change, or exchange. మార్చు. వర్గు or వర్గువు vargu. n. A square number (in arithmetic,) సమసంఖ్య. In accounts, it means a ledger. ఆసామివారిగా వ్రాసినలెక్క పేరువరుసగా వ్రాసినలెక్క. Change of appointment, ఉద్యోగములను మార్చడము. వర్గించు varginṭsu. v. a. To classify, class, post, arrange. తరగతిగా ఏర్పరచు, వర్గుచేయు.

(p. 1233) vyavasāyamu vyavasāyamu. [Skt.] n. Effort, attempt, industry. ఉద్యోగము, పరిశ్రమము. Cultivation, tillage. కృషి, సేద్యము. వ్యవసాయముచేయు to cultivate, సీద్యముచేయు. వ్యవసాయి or వ్యవసాయకుడు vyavasāyi. n. A cultivator, husbandman, farmer, వ్యవసాయముగలవాడు.

(p. 1235) vyāpāramu vyāpāramu. [Skt.] n. An affair, matter, business, occupation, profession, trade, commerce. పని, వ్యవహారము, వర్తకము, ఉద్యోగము. 'పాపపరులకు కోప వ్యాపారంబులేతోచు.' Vish. i. 21. దుర్వ్యాపారము misconduct, bad practice, crime. సద్వ్యాపారము good conduct, a good action. మనోవ్యాపారము an act of the mind. వ్యాపారముచేయు vyāpāramu-chēyu. v. n. To trade. వర్తకముచేయు. వ్యాపారి vyāpāri. n. One engaged in any business. A man belonging to a certain sect among Brahmins, బ్రాహ్మణులలో నొకశాఖవాడు, మాధ్వుడు. గోలకొండ వ్యాపారులు a subdivision of that sect.
