(p. 18) akaṭavikaṭamu n. Opposition, contrariety, awkardness. విరుద్ధము, ప్రతికూలము. ఎందుకు అకటవికటము చేస్తున్నావు why do you give trouble?

(p. 40) ati ati. [Skt. prefix.] Over, beyond, exceeding, very much; extreme, vast. అధికమైన. A rhyme says అతిదానాద్ధతఃకర్ణః , అతిలోభాత్సుయోధనః, అతికామాద్ధశగ్రీవః, అతి సర్వత్సవర్జయేత్. ఎందుకును అతి కారాదు excess is always hurtful.

(p. 180) endu endu. [Tel.] adv. Where? ఎందో somewhere. ఎందుగురించి regarding what or which. ఎందున్ను everywhere. ఎందుపోయినాడు where is he gone? ఎందుమీద whereupon. ఎందెందులకు in what respects. ఎందులో wherein ఎందేని somewhere or other, anywhere. ఎందుండి whence. ఎందుకు or ఎందులకు why? for what? wherefore? అది నాకెందుకు what is that to me, ఎందుచేత whereby. ఎందుచేతనంటే because. ఎందున where.ఎందునిమిత్తము wherefore, why. ఎందునుంచి, ఎందునుండి whence. ఎందైన wheresoever, anywhere.

(p. 196) ēṭiki ēṭiki. [Tel. for ఏమిటికి] adv. Why? wherefore? ఎందుకు. అది నాకు నేటికి what's that to me? Swa. iii. 6.

(p. 664) niṣṭhuramu nishṭhuramu. [Skt.] adj. Hard, harsh, cruel, taunting, rude. కఠిణమైన, పరుషమైన. n. Rudeness, harshness. A taunt or reproach. నిజముచెప్పితే నిష్ఠురము the truth is harsh or hard to hear. ఎందుకు నిష్ఠురము why incur a reproach? నిష్ఠురత్వము nishṭhu-ratvamu. n. Hardness, cruelty.

(p. 933) maṇṭa manṭa. [Tel. from మండు.] n. A blaze, flame, burning. A hot or burning sensation. జ్వాల. Heat, acute pain, inflammation. చురుక్కుమనే నొప్పి. Fury, wrath, కోపము. దానిని చూస్తే నాకు మంటవస్తున్నది I am provoked at seeing it. కడుపు మంట envy. కడుపుమంట తీర తిట్టినాడు he cursed till his rage was exhausted. కడుపుమంటమాటలు ఎందుకు వింటావు why do you listen to envious language? మంటచమురు or మంటనూనె manṭa-ṭsamuru. n. Burning oil. మంటనెయ్యి hot ghee. మంటమారి or మంటలమారి a peevish or pestilent fellow, కోపశీలుడు; an envious man, ఓర్వలేనివాడు.

(p. 951) manasu or మనస్సు manasu. [Tel.] n. The internal organ of cognition, the intellect, understanding, mind. Inclination, wish, will, pleasure, ఇష్టము. adj. Liking. ఇష్టము. మనసగు manas-agu. (మనసు + అగు.) v. n. To like, ఇష్టమగు. మనోవేగముగా పోయినాడు he went as quick as thought. మనోవ్యాధికి మందులేదు there is no cure for the heart-ache or for a mental disease. వాణ్ని పిలవడానకు నీకెట్లా మనస్సు వచ్చినది how could you find it in your heart to call him? నీకు మనస్సు వచ్చినదానిని తీసికొనవచ్చును you may take which you choose. దానిని చేయడానకు వానికి యింకా మనస్సు రాలేదు he is not yet inclined to do this. తమరు మనస్సు పట్టితే అవును if you once set your heart upon it it will be done. వానికి మనస్సువస్తే ఒకటి, మనస్సు రాకపోతే ఒకటి he is guided by fancy or whim. మనస్సే కైలాసము heaven is in the heart. వానిమనస్సు అభేద్యము his thoughts are inscrutable. వాని మనస్సును ఎందుకు నొప్పించెదవు why should you grieve him or his heart? వానిమనస్సు విరిగినది he is heart-broken. ఈమాట నీమనస్సులో ఉండనీ you must keep this to yourself. అది యేడ్చితే వానిమనస్సు తాళలేదు he could not endure to see her weep. వాని మనస్సు తిరుగలేదు he has not altered his opinion. వానికి మనస్సులో ఒకటి, బయట ఒకటి he has one thing in his heart and another in his mouth. నామనస్సు ఒకవిధముగానున్నది I know not what to think, my mind is confused. 'ఇంద్రియములు మనస్థ్సములు' the senses are dependent on the mind. M. (మనసు + అరి.) n. A wise man. బుద్ధిమంతుడు. 'క అనయమునిజ ప్రచారం, బనయముగాకుండ నచట నతిశౌర్యమునన్, మనసంయేకేసరియని, మనసరిరాకొమరుమూక మనుమను రీతిన్.' R. i. 123. మనసా manasā. adv. Mentally, in the heart. హృదయములో. మనసార manas-āra. adv. Sincerely, willingly. మనసిజుడు, మనఃప్రభవుడు, మనోజుడు or మనోభవుడు manasijuḍu. n. Lit: The mind-born. An epithet of Manmadha, మన్మథుడు. మనస్కరించు manas-karinṭsu. v. n. To be inclined. మనఃపూర్తిగాచేయు, మనస్సు ఉంచు. In correspondence మనస్కరించేది denotes 'please to consider the above: this is equivalent to 'yours truly.' మనస్కరించి willingly, మనఃపూర్వకముగా. మనస్కారము manas-kāramu. n. Fixed attention, profound meditation. మనఃపూర్తి, మనఃప్రయత్నము, చిత్తపరిపూర్తి. మనస్కుడు mana-skuḍu. adj. 'Minded;' a word used in compounds, thus సన్మనస్కుడు a right minded man, a good hearted man. దుర్మనస్కుడు an evil minded man. ఖిన్నమసస్కుడయి heart-broken. భిన్నమనస్కులయి being of various minds. ప్రసన్నమనస్కులయి light hearted, pleased. మనస్తాపము manas-tāpamu. n. Mental distress, displeasure, anger, vexation. ఆమెకు మనస్తాపముగానున్నది she is annoyed or grieved at this. మనస్ఫూర్తిగా or మనఃపూర్వకముగా manas-phūrti-gā. adv. Willingly. మనస్వి manasvi. adj. Attentive, fixing the mind upon anything. Intelligent. జాగరూకుడు. Goodhearted. మంచి మనస్సుగల. మనోజ్షము manōgnamu. adj. Agreeable, pleasing, captivating, lovely, handsome, మంజులమైన, సుందరమైన. మనోరంజని manō-ranjani. n. (Lit. that which delights the mind.) The name of a certain flower with a rank smell, apparently a sort of arum. మనోరథము manō-rathamu. n. A wish, desire. ఇచ్ఛ. నామనోరథము తమరు త్వరగా నెరవేర్తురని నమ్మియున్నాను I trust that you will soon grant what I so earnestly wish. మనోమలికితము manō-malikitamu. n. Misunderstanding. మనోహరము manō-haramu. adj. Heart-stealing, i.e., charming, lovely, alluring, captivating, fascinating, ఇంపైన. n. Vermicelli.

(p. 982) miṅgu or మ్రింగు mingu. [Tel.] v. a. To swallow, devour. కబళించు. గ్రుక్కిళ్లు మింగు to swallow one's saliva, to stand speechless, to smother one's grief: to water, as the mouth, అపేక్షించు. గ్రుక్కిళ్లు ఎందుకు మింగుతావు చెప్పు why do you falter so in speaking. 'కన్నపుదొంగలువచ్చిరె, మిన్నక యీలోనివారె మింగిరటంచున్.' Vaij. iv. 54. the people inside have devoured it. మింగనగొండి, మింగగొడ్డి or మ్రింగనగొండి minga-na-goṇḍi. n. A glutton. తిండిపోతు. 'మనసిజారియు మింగగొండియయ్యె.' BD. iv. 1281.

(p. 991) muṃ mun. [contracted for Tel. ముందు.] adj. First, fore, front, as ముంగుతులు the front locks of hair. ముంగడ mun-jaḍa. (ముందు + కడ.) n. The front place, ముందుచోటు, ఎదురు, ముందు ముంగల mungala. n. The front, ఎదురు. adv. In front, opposite, before, ఎదురు. ముంగలి mungali. adj. Fronting, opposite, being in front. ఎదుటనుండే. Next, తరువాతి. మీదటి. 'సేనాపతియగునాద్రుపదనందనుండు, ముంగలియై నడపించుచుండ.' M. VI. i. 147. n. One who goes before, ముందునడచువాడు. ముంగలు mun-galu. v. n. To walk before, ముందునడచు. ముంగారి or ముంగరి mungāri. adj. Pertaining to the beginning of the season, ముంగారిపైరు the early crop. ముంగాలు mun-gālu. (ముందు + కాలు.) n. The fore leg, the tip of the foot. ముందరికాలు, పాదాగ్రము. 'ముంగాళ్లపై ౛ాగి.' A. vi. 17. ముంగురులు mun-gurulu. (ముందు + కురులు.) n. Front-locks. అలకలు. ముంగేలు mun-gēlu. (ముందు + కేలు.) n. The fore arm. ముంగొంగు mun-gongu. (ముందు + కొంగు.) n. A fringe or trimming. The front tuck of a woman's girdle, ముందరిచెరుగు, చెంగుకొన. ముంగొన the front end, ముందటికొన. ముంగోపము mun-gōpamu. n. Sudden passion, unreasoning anger. ఎందుకును ముందరవచ్చు కోపము, ఓర్పులేక తటాలునవచ్చు కోపము. ముంగోపి mun-gōpi. n. A passionate man or woman, a peevish man or woman, ముందర కోపముచేయువాడు. ముంగోలు mun-gōlu. (ముందు + కోలు.) adj. First, మొదటి. ముంజెయ్యి mun-jeyyi. (ముందు + చెయ్యి .) Same as ముంగేలు. ముంజేతికంకణము a bracelet on the wrist; metaphorically, plain as a bangle on the fore-arm, మిక్కిలి స్పష్టమైనది. ముం౛ూరు mun-ḍzūru. (ముందు + చూరు.) n. The eaves of a house. ఇంటిచూరుచివర.

(p. 1059) r ra. [Tel. short for రమ్ము.] In addressing intimate friends or very low class persons, this is used as a suffix; thus, ఏమిర, ఎందుకుర, ఏమిరా, ఎందుకురా. In ancient Telugu, when it was under influence of the Kanarese literature the letter ఱ was used, but it is now obsolete. It is called శకటరేఫము, అలఘురేఫము or బండి 'ర' while the ర is called మంచి 'ర' or లఘురేఫము. The ర is never used in Sanskrit words. It is said to have been pronounced hard, and to have had the force of two ర sounds; so that in ఱ్ఱ there are supposed to be four R sounds included, which is absurd on the face of it. According to the ancient spelling తరచు means to churn, తఱుచు thick. పెర is a bee hive, పెర other, strange.పెరుగు is curd, పెరుగు to curd, పెఱుగు to grow. వేరు means a root, వేఱు different. మరుగు means to hide, మఱుగు too boil. In modern Telugu the ఱ is unknown and thus both sets of words are splet alike. The ancient poets distinguished these sounds, never allowing ర to rhyme with ఱ. Modern Telugu poets such as the translator of the Bhagavata disregard this distinction. In recent years attempts have been made to revive the use of this obsolete letter, but without success.

(p. 1238) vrayamu vrayamu. Corruption of వ్యయము (q. v.) 'వలసినంతర్థంబువ్రయమునకిత్తు.' BD. v. 110. Vema 1094. ఆయువ్రయము lapse of years. ఎందుకు వాగ్వ్రయము చేస్తున్నావు why do you waste your breath? నామీద నిండా వాగ్వ్రయము చేసినాడు he has given his tongue great liberty about me. వ్రయమైపోవు vryam-ai-pōvu. v. n. To be expended, వ్యయమైపోవు.
