(p. 1) a a. 3. [Tel.] The termination of many pure Tel. words in the fem. and neut. genders, e. g., అమ్మ, అక్క, అత్త, అప్ప, అవ్వ, దండ, కర్ర, నేల, వల, ఓడ. But of a few maseulines only; e. g., తాత, మామ, అన్న, బావ, దొర.

(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) aṅkāriñcu ankārintsu. Hind. hankarna. v. i. To set sail. ఓడచాపలెత్తిపోవు.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 29) ajamōda aja-mōda. [Skt.] n. The seed of Bishop's weed. Sison Ammi. ఓమము, Common Carroway, the species called Ajwaen (Lingusticum Ajwaen), and especially a species of Parsley, Apium Involucratum.

(p. 53) anīṃ [from అనీ H.] n. The point or edge. మొన. The bows or front of a ship. ఓడ ముఖము యొక్క చెంపలు.

(p. 55) anunayamu anu-nayamu. [Skt.] n. Conciliation, consoling, entreaty, begging. సాంత్వనము, ఓదార్చడము, అడుగుకోవడము, మంచిమాటలాడడము, ఊరట. అనునయించు anu-nayinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To conciliate, console; to entreat, beg. ఓదార్చు, అడుగుకొను, మంచిమాటలాడు.

(p. 59) annamu annamu. [Tel.] n. Boiled rice, meat, food. ఓదనము, కూడు, వణ్ణము. అన్న వస్త్రములు food and raiment. అన్నదానము the giving of food. అన్నరసము essence of food, chyle. అన్నవికారము disorder of the stomach from indigestion. అన్నశేషము leavings of food.

(p. 61) apajayamu apa-jayamu. [Skt.] n. Failure, defeat. ఓటమి.

(p. 68) ablōsu ablōsu. [?] n. Ablōs. The wake of a ship. ఓడపోవునపుడు వెనుక నీళ్లలో తెలిసే౛ాడ.

(p. 75) amāru , అమారుతాడు [Port. amarra.] A cable. మోకు, ఓడలంగరు మోకు.

(p. 81) aritramu aritramu. [Skt.] n. An oar; a rudder, a helm. ఓడనడవు తెడ్డు, చుక్కాని.

(p. 94) avapātamu ava-pātamu. [Skt.] n. A pit concealed under leaves and earth to catch elephants. ఏనుగులు మొదలైన మృగములను పట్టుకొనుటకై త్రవ్వి మీడ కర్రలను కంపలను పరచి వాటి పైన కొద్దిగా మన్ను వేయబడిన గొయ్యి, ఓదము.

(p. 102) asahiṣṇuḍu a-sahishṇuḍu. [Skt.] n. He who is impatient. తాళలేనివాడు. అసహిష్ణుత n. Impatience. ఓర్వలేమి, తాళలేమి. అసహిష్ణువైన adj. Impatient, unenduring. ఓర్వలేని, తాళలేని.

(p. 103) asūya a-sūya. [Skt.] n. Envy, malignity, intolerance. ఓర్వలేమి.
