(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.

(p. 253) karnāṭakamu or కర్ణాటము karṇāṭakamu. [Skt. from కరి+నాడు, the black soil or country.] n. The Karṇāṭaka or Kannada language. The Carnatic dance. A comedy: that division of acting which relates to love tales and emotions of amorous passion. కర్నాటకమేళము Native music, a Hindu band. కర్ణాటకరాజుల కథలు. Legendary tales, old wives' fables. కర్ణాటక ప్రభువులు the ancient kings or aboriginal princes.

(p. 362) gāndhāramu gāndhāramu. [Skt.] n. A certain note in music. The Candahar country. గాంధారి gāndhāri. n. The mother of Duryōdhana, proverbially, a bold pert woman. గాంధారి కథలు gāndhāri-kathalu. n. A kind of ballads or ditties.

(p. 376) gudiguṃzalu gudi-gunzalu. n. Stick planted at the entrance of a pen or fold. పశువుల దొడ్డిద్వారమునకు నిలువుగా పాతిన కర్రలు. గుదిగ్రుచ్చు or గుదికూర్చు gudi-gruṭsṭsu. v. n. To arrange. సవరించు. 'మున్నిటికథలు గుదిగ్రుచ్చుకొనిచెప్పుకొని పోవవలదు.' L. vii. 74. గుదిత్రాడు gudi-trāḍu. n. A halter, a tether. దూడ కాలికి కట్టే తాడు. గుదిత్రోయు to tie up the legs and push away కాళ్లు కట్టి త్రోయు.

(p. 617) dvāparamu dvāparamu. [Skt.] n. The third or Brazen age of the world, which has preceded the present కలియుగము or Iron age. ద్వాపరయుగకథలు old wives' tales, legends.

(p. 708) pani pani. [Tel.] n. Work, a task. కర్మము. Business, employment, వ్యాపారము. Workmenship, శిల్పము. ఈ కట్టడమునందు మంచిపని చేసియున్నారు there is good workmanship in this building. An affair, act, matter. Service, utility, purpose, object, intention, design. ప్రయోజనము. An order, duty, నియోగము. పనిమీద ఉన్నాడు he is busy. మంచిపని very well, well, good. మంచిపనిచేసినావు you did well or right. అతని పనిచూస్తున్నాను I am engaged in his service: I am acting for him. అతనిపని తీర్చినారు they settled his business, or they killed him. ఇక్కడ నీకేమిపని what business have you here? This word is sometimes omitted in translating; as in నీపనిపట్టిస్తాను I will punish you. ఇంతపనికి నన్నేల వెంటబెట్టుకొనివచ్చినావు why have you brought me for such a trifle or pretence? పనికిమాలి (or) పనిచెడి కూర్చున్నాడు he is sitting idle. వారు వ్యాధిచేత పనిచెడిరి they became infirm through illness. వానితో విరోధము పనికిరాదు he will not stand quarrelling. దాన్ని సంపాదించడము ఎంతపని it is no great matter to get it. నాపని చెరిపినారు they spoiled my work. పనిచెరువుకథలు idle stories. పనికి వచ్చే useful. పనికివచ్చే పిల్లకాయ a promising boy. పనికిరాని or పనికిమాలి useless. అక్కడికి నీవు ఏపనిమీద పోయినావు useless. అక్కడికి నీవు ఏపనిమీద పోయినావు about what business did you go there? నీపనిని నీవు చూచుకొనుము mind your own business. అక్కడికి పోవలసినపనిలేదు there is no need of going there. ఇప్పట్లో వానిపని యిట్లు ఉన్నది he is now in this state. అట్లు చెప్ప పని లేదు there is no need of saying so. పనిగొను pani-gonu. v. a. To undertake a work, to engage in a business. పూనుకొను. To employ, నియోగించు. 'పనిగొనవుతెలియగ బరికించి చూచిన.' Vēma. పనితనము pani-ta-namu. n. Workmanship, elegance. పనితనముగల ఒక మంచము a handsome bed. పనితొడవులు pani-toḍarulu. n. Worked or embossed jewels. పనిపడు or పనివడు pani-paḍu. v. n. To busy oneself with. to engage in, పూనుకొను. To concern oneself with, అక్కరపడు. పనివడి or పనిపడి pani-paḍi. adv. Intentionally. కావలెనని, ప్రయత్నపూర్వకముగా. 'పరులను పనిపడి దూషించెనేని పాపము వచ్చున్.' V. P. iv. 249. పనివాటులు jobs, work. పనిముట్టు or పనిమటము pani-muṭṭu. n. An instrument, tool, impelement. కొరముట్టు, ఉపకరణము. 'పనిమటములుగొంచు పయనమైరండు.' Pal. 314. పనివంచు, పని పంచు or పనిగొను pani-vanṭsu. v. a. To command. నియోగించు. పనివాడు pani-vāḍu. n. A servant: a good workman. పనివిను pani-vinu. v. n. To obtain permission, to take leave. To proceed, to go or come. 'దేవర కీర్తి వెక్కసంబుగ జెప్పవిని చూడగోరి, పనివిని నేను మాభాగ్యంబుకతన.' H.D.i. 847.

(p. 753) piṭṭa piṭṭa. [Tel.] n. A small bird. A little thing. నక్కపిట్ట a small wild root. This name is applied to some fish, as ఈసపిట్ట. adj. Trifling. పిట్టకథలు idle stories. పిట్టపిడుగు piṭṭa-piḍugu. adj. Inevitable, అనివార్యము. పిట్టకాసు or పిత్తడికాసు piṭṭa-kāsu. n. A small kind of fish: what in England is called the Miller's Thumb.

(p. 767) puṇyamu puṇyamu. [Skt.] n. Virtue, holiness, merit, excellence, purity. ధర్మము. A good deed, a good or meritorious work or action, a work of supererogation, that which is more than required as a matter of duty. సుకృతము. adj. Virtuous, sacred, holy, pure, righteous. పవిత్రము. Good, excellent, మనోజ్ఞము. Charitable, generous. పుణ్యశ్లోకుడు a celebrated man. పుణ్యకథలు godly legends. పుణ్యకాలము an auspicious time. పుణ్యస్త్రీ (corrupted into పునిస్త్రీ) a happy woman, one whose husband is living. నన్ను ఉత్త పుణ్యానికి కొట్టినాడు he beat me without cause, meaning the same as నిష్కారణముగా. నీపుణ్యముచేత తొందరవచ్చినది (ironical) for this trouble we may thank you. ఇది అంతా మీ పుణ్యము this is all due to you goodness. నీపుణ్యముండును వాని జోలికిమాత్రము పోకు for goodness' sake do not meddle with him. పుణ్యానికి ఇచ్చినపొలము a field granted in free gift. A well known verse says. శ్లోకార్ధేన ప్రవక్ష్యామి యుదక్తం గ్రంథకోటిభిః, పరోపకారః పుణ్యాయపాపాయ పరపీడనం. పుణ్యజనుడు puṇya-januḍu. n. A man of excellence, a holy man, సుజనుడు. A Rākshasa, an evil spirit, రాక్షసుడు. పుణ్యజనేశ్వరుడు puṇya-janēṣvaruḍu. n. Kubēra. పుణ్యబూమి puṇya-bhūmi. n. The Holy land (of the Hindus), i.e., Hindustan, the land between the Himalayas and the Vindhyas. పుణ్యలోకము puṇya-lōkamu. n. Heaven. పుణ్యవంతుడు puṇya-vantuḍu. n. One who is holy or virtuous. ధార్మికుడు, అదృష్టవంతుడు. ఈ విషయములో అతడు చాలా పుణ్యవంతుడు. in this respect he is very lucky. పుణ్యస్త్రీ or పుణ్యాంగన puṇya-strī. n. A good housewife, good woman, lady. పుణ్యాత్ముడు puny-ātmuḍu. n. A holy, pious or charitable person, పుణ్యస్వరూపుడు. పుణ్యాహము puṇy-āhamu. n. A holy or sacred day, పుణ్యదినము. పుణ్యాహవాచనము puṇy-āha-vāchanamu. n. The consecration or hallowing of a ceremony. A ceremonial purification. పుణ్యుడు puṇyudu. n. A holy or virtuous man. పుణ్యులారా O holy men!

(p. 900) bētāḷamu bētāḷamu. [Skt.] n. A demon, పిశాచము. బేతాళకథలు or విక్రమార్క కథలు bētāḷa-kathalu. n. A set of fables related by a goblin who is described as the captive of Vikramārka. బేతాళిక bētālika. n. A she-devil or sprite; a wicked woman. పిశాచస్త్రీ.' బండతిట్లబేతాళికల సారెదిట్టువాని.' A. vi. 23. బేతాళుడు or భేతాళుడు bētāḷuḍu. n. The name of a servant of Yama, a goblin, imp, demon, or fiend similar to Puck, యదుకింకరుడు.

(p. 1160) vāviri vāviri. [Tel.] n. Order, series, క్రమము, అనుగతి. Greatness, glory. Patience, quiet, resignation. సహనము. 'ప్రతియాసుబాహుని పట్టణంబునకు, బోవుచున్నారమో పూబోడియనుచు, బోవుచున్నారమో పూబోడియనుచు, వావిరిదో డ్కొనివడిపడినరుగ.' ND. iv. 600. adj. Great, much, అధికము. Following, అనుగతము. Difficult to obtain, ఉత్కృష్టము. 'కేవలకల్పనాకథలు కృత్రిమరత్నము లాద్యసత్కథల్, వావిరిపుట్టురత్నములు లాద్యసత్కథల్, వావిరిపుట్టు రత్నములు.' Vasu. Pref. 35. adv. Very, exceedingly, much. అత్యంతము. 'భావంబురూపంబుభక్తియు ప్రియము, వావిరి వర్ణించివర్ణించివాని, మనమునదయ బుట్టుమాటలుచెప్పి.' ND. i. 612.
