(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

Consent, admission, acceptance, approval, approbation. అర్ధాంగీకారము half consent, doubtful admission; being half in earnest. అంగీకృతము [Skt.] a. Agreed on, accepted, admitted. ఒప్పుకోబడిన.

(p. 9) aṇḍamu anḍamu. [Skt.] n. An egg. A testicle. The world. The Universe.గుడ్డు, వృషణము, ప్రపంచము. అండాకర్షణము castration. అండాకారముగా having the shape of an egg, elliptical. అండాకృతి an ellipsis. అండవాయువు anḍa-vāyuvu. [Skt.] n. The plant called Ceylon lead-wort. Plumbago Ẕelanica. చిత్రమూలము. అగ్నివేండపాకు ammannia baccifera or blistering Ammannia (Watts) అగ్ని శిఖ. a flame of fire. Also a plant (Gloriosa superba) తరిగొర్రెచెట్టు, కుంకుమపువ్వు చెట్టు the Saf-flower plant. అగ్నిహోత్రము fire. అగ్నిహోత్రుడు the god of fire. అగ్నిహోత్రాలు కాల్చుచున్నాడు or చేయుచున్నాడు colloquial for 'he is smoking.'

(p. 32) aṭṭu or అట్టుగా aṭṭu. [Tel.] adv. (A particle) So that, as, according to. అతడు వచ్చేటట్టు వ్రాయుము write a letter so that he may come. మీరు చెప్పినట్టుగా చేస్తిని I did as you bid me. ఆయన చెప్పినట్టు according to his order. వాడు ఇంకా అవతలకు పోవునట్టు అగుపడ్డాడు he seemed as though he would go further. నేను చెప్పినట్టు చేసినాడు he did as I said. వారు సాగిపోయినట్టుగా చెప్పెను he said that they had passed on. అట్టు గాక or అట్లాకాక aṭṭugāka. adv. Without being so. అట్టుల aṭṭula. adv. As soon as, soon after. వెంటనే. 'చెట్టు దిగి వచ్చినట్టుల.' H. ii. 47. Just as. ఆప్రకారము. అట్టే (for అట్లాగే) aṭṭē. [Tel.] adv. Thus. So. (p. 40) atithi atithi. [Skt. a=not, and tiḍhi -- day; hence lit. one who comes unexpectedly;] n. A guest, a stranger. పరగృహగతుడు. అతిథిదర్మము title to hospitality. అతిథిపూజ or అతిథిసత్కారము welcoming a guest, showing respect to a guest by ministering to his wants. అతిథిసేవ attention paid to a guest, hospitality.

(p. 45) adḥkariñcu adhah-karinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To treat with disrespect. తక్కువపరుచు; క్రిందుపరుచు. అధఃకారము n. The act of looking down on one. హీనపరచడము. అధఃకారి adhakāri. [Skt.] n. He who defies or outrivals. తక్కువపరిచేవాడు.

(p. 47) adhīnamu adhīnamu. [Skt.] adj. Dependent on, subject to, subservient. పరాధీనమైన, నిదేయమైన. అధీనత adhīnata. [Skt.] Subjection, dependence. అధీనము n. Possession, power, charge, control, authority. స్వాధీనము, అధికారము. అది నా అధీనములో లేదు it is not in my possession. నా అధీనములోనుండేవారు those who are under my control. దాన్ని నీ అధీనము చేసినాను I have committed it to you.
