(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 25) agu agu. [Tel.] (commongly written అవు), v. To be, to become, to prove to be. The present p|| is అగుచు, or అవుచు as అగుచున్నాడు or అవుచున్నాడు he is becoming. మిక్కిలి సిరి అగును much fortune will result. The past p|| is అయి as దొంగ అయి turned a rogue, become a thief. The root in A of అగు is కా as అట్లా కారాదు it cannot happen so. Aorist p|| అగు, అగునట్టి, అయ్యే, అయ్యెడి as క్రూరుడగు cruel. శాలివాహనశక వర్షంబులు 1466 అగునట్టి క్రోధి సంవత్సర కార్తీకశుద్ధ 5 శనివారము Saturday the 5th of the bright fortnight of the month Kārtika in the year Krodhi 'which is' the year 1466 (of the Salivahana æra.) ఇది దొంగతనము అయ్యేపనిగనుక as this is a matter in which a man might prove a rogue. Past Rel. p|| అయిన as నాది అయిన గుర్రము a horse of mine. The imperatives are కమ్ము plu. కండి. Causal forms కాజేయు or కావించు. Negative aorist కాదు, &c. అగుర = అగను+ర = అవును. It is so. 1. To be, to become, as కాకి కోకిలయగునె can a crow become a cuckoo? వాడు ఏమయినాడు what has become of him? దొంగ అయినాడు he proved to be a thief. వాడు నేరస్థుడైనాడు he was found guilty. ఆ పని అవును కాకపోవును that undertaking may or may not be accomplished. వానికి ఆకలి అవుతున్నది he is hungry. ఇట్లు రాత్రియగుట as it was now night. బాలుడగుట as he is but a child. 2. To be made, to be finished, to be spent or expended, to elapse, as పని శీఘ్రముగా కావలెను the work must be done soon. వివాహమగుము marry her. ఆ పెండ్లి అయినది the marriage took place. భోజనమయినది dinner is over. రాజదర్పనమయినది I got a sight of the king. అయినదాన్ని చూపు shew what has been done. ఆ పని అయినది the work is over, it is done. కావచ్చినది it is nearly done. రూకలు అయిపోయినది the money is expended. సంవత్సరము అయినది a year has passed. నెల అవుతున్నది it is about a month since. అర్థమయినదా do you understand it? సాకు భావముకాతేదు I do not understand it. భావముయనది I understand it. స్నానము కావించు to bathe, or to cause to bathe. తీర్పుకాలేదు no decision has been given. మ్రుచ్చిలితెచ్చుట మగతనం బగునె is it a manly thing to steal? 3. To be proper or fit, to be agreeable, as ఇచ్చట నుండనగునే మనకు is it fit for us to remain here? కాని పని an improper or unbecoming act. అట్లా చేయనవునా is it right to do so? పగలు కాచినపాలు ఆ రాత్రికి అవును milk boiled the same day is fit for use that night. అతనికీ నాకు కానందున as we are not on good terms. అయినవాండ్లున్ను కానివాండ్లున్ను friends and enemies. 4. To grow, as ఈ తోటలో ఏమి అవుతవి what is grown in this garden? ఇక్కడ వరి కఅదు rice does not grow here. 5. (Governing a dative) To stand in relation, as వాడు నీకేమవుతాడు how is he related to you? నాకు కావలసినవారు my relations. వానికి మేము ఏమీకాము we are in no way related to him. 6. Added to some nouns it gives them a verbal significance, as వారు ఎప్పుడు ప్రయాణమవుతారు when will they start or set out? విభాగాలు అయి వేరింటి కాపురము చేస్తున్నారు they seperated and live apart.

(p. 40) ati ati. [Skt. prefix.] Over, beyond, exceeding, very much; extreme, vast. అధికమైన. A rhyme says అతిదానాద్ధతఃకర్ణః , అతిలోభాత్సుయోధనః, అతికామాద్ధశగ్రీవః, అతి సర్వత్సవర్జయేత్. ఎందుకును అతి కారాదు excess is always hurtful.

(p. 61) apathyamu a-pathyamu. [Skt.] n. An error in diet, a deviation from పథ్యము or prescribed regimen. వైద్యుడు కారాదన్న దాన్ని తినడము.

(p. 164) uppata uppata. [Tel.] n. Betraying; divulging a secret; dilating on any man's extraordinary prosperity, qualifications or beauty of any person. రద్ది, రట్టు, రన్వ, ఒకని మేలున కోర్వలేక ఆడిపోసికొనుట. అది నిండా ఉప్పతగానున్నది it is the common talk of the town. ఉప్పతకారాదు to be the talk of the town is unlucky. ఉప్పతించు uppatinṭsu. v. a. To abuse through envy. ఓర్వక ఆడిపోసికొను.

(p. 692) paga paga. [Tel.] n. Enmity. విరోధము. An enemy, విరోధి. పగపట్టు or పగగొను paga-paṭṭu. v. n. To bear a grudge, to cherish enmity, విరోధపడు. పగచాటు paga-ṭsāṭu. n. Blaming, censure, దూషించుట. పగతుడు pagatuḍu. (పగ+అతడు.) n. An enemy, foe, శత్రువు. పగతురు or పగతులు enemies. M. v. ii. 80. పగతురాలు a woman who is an enemy. పగదారి paga-dāri. n. An enemy విరోధము వహించినవాడు. పగరు pagaru. (పగ+వారు.) n. Enemies, foes, శత్రువులు. పగలు pagalu. n. Enmities, శత్రుత్వములు, పగవాడు paga-vāḍu. n. A foe, an enemy. ఇది నా పగవారికైనా కారాదు I would not wish even my enemies to suffer this.

(p. 870) balamu balamu. [Skt.] n. Strength, might, power, influence. Efficaciousness, potency. Force, rigour, severity. సత్తువ. సారము, బలుపు. A force, army, host, folk, people, a crowd, number, party. సేన. బలవితానము a host. దైవబలము the finger of God, Divine assistance, బలముచేయు to strengthen; to enforce, aid, assist. వాన మరీమరీ బలము చేయుచున్నది the rain is increasing. దానిని ఒక బలముచేసుకొని relying on it as a ground or reason. adj. Strong, mighty, much, అధికము. Potent, efficacious. బలకరము bala-kara-mu. adj. Forcible, violent, strengthening. బలకరమైన సాక్ష్యము strong evidence. బలకరము or బళకరము balakaramu. n. Force, violence, strength. Watching, కావలి. A guard, or watch, కావలి, పారా. R. v. 43. బలకరించు bala-karinṭsu. v. n. To spread, వ్యాపించు. v. a. To strengthen. బలకాయించు (బలము+ఇంచు) balakā-yintsu. v. n. To flourish, prosper. వృద్ధి అగు, అతిశయించు. బలకొట్టు bala-koṭṭu. v. n. To sing, ah, ah ఆ అని శ్రుతి పట్టు. బలకొను bala-konu. (బలము+కొను.) v. n. To flourish, అతిశయించు, బలగము or బల్గము balagamu. n. Attendants, retinue, పరిజనము. A party, set: a troop, army, host: a family circle. జ్ఞాతి బంధు సమూహము. 'చెంచు బలగము నేలెను.' (Garudach. 113,) he ruled a troop of foresters. Swa. iii. 75. బలదేవుడు, బలభద్రుడు or బలరాముడు bala-dēvuḍu. n. Balarāma, Krishna's brother. బలదేవుడు n. Wind, వాయువు. బలపడు bala-paḍu. (బలము+పడు.) v. n. (p. 1070) rā rā. [Tel.] The infinitive of imperative of వచ్చు. See note under రమ్ము. మా యింటికిరా come, to my house. రాదలచినాడు he thought of coming. రాలేను I cannot come. 'దగ్గిర రానెదుర్కొని.' (T. iv. 173.) when he drew near, (she) turned towards him. రాక, రాకడ or రావడము rāka. n. Coming, arrival, approach. వచ్చుట. రాకపోకలు coming and going. రాక. adv. Without coming. రాకపోవు or రాకయుండు rāka-pōvu. v. n. Not to come or arrive. రాకు or రాకుము rāku. v. imp negative. Come not, do not come, రావద్దు. రాబడి rā-baḍi. n. Income, వచ్చుబడి. రాగాపోగా rāgā-pōgā, (lit: coming or going.) adv. In the end, finally, at last one way or another, with one thing or another. రాగాపోగా నిలిచినదియిది after all this is the remainder. రాడు rāḍu. (3d. pers. sing. masc. neg. aorist of వచ్చు.) He will not come, he does not come. రాదు rādu. (3rd. pers. sing. neut) It does not come. It is used as an auxiliary signifying prohibition: కోపపడరాదుగాని చెప్పుతాను you must not be angry but I will tell you. నిరాశకారాదు we should not give up hope. అట్లు చేసినట్టు ఎంచరాదుగాని we must not imagine he has done so, but yet. నేను ఇక్కడ ఉండరాదు. I must not stop here. రాని rāni. (neg. rel. participle of వచ్చు.) Which has not come which shall not come or does not happen. పనికిరాని or అక్కరకురాని useless. చెప్పరానిమాట what is not fit to be said. వచ్చీరానిమాటలు a half formed pronunciation as that of a child beginning to speak. వాడు వచ్చీ రానివానితో౛తే his coming is as useless as if he were absent. చదువురానివాడు one who cannot read, an illiterate man. చదవరానిజాబు an illegible letter, or a letter that should not be read. 'వచనములు రానికడుచిన్న వానినిన్ను' thee, a child unable to speak. Yamunā Charya Charitra. i. 73. రాను rānu. (first person neg. aor. of. వచ్చు.) I will not come or I do not come. Also, a noun neaning coming, as రానుపోను both coming and going, as రానుపోను both coming and going. రానుపోను పదిదినములుపట్టును to go and return will take ten days. రానున్నది that which is to come or to happen. 'రానిదికోరినరాదది రామన్నది కోరకున్న రాకుండదుగా' (Sumati. 137.) what cannot happen though desired: that which will happen though desired: that which will happen though undesired will not fail to come to pass. రాబట్టు rā-baṭṭu. v. a. To receive, receive back, recover, regain. వచ్చినదాన్ని రాబట్టు receive that which is sent to you. రామి rāmi. (negative verbal noun of వచ్చు.) The not coming, non-arrival, రాకపోవడము. plu. రాములు. చేయరామి impracticability. తిప్పరామి the difficulty of turning (it.) కానరామి the not seeing, the impossibility of seeing. 'అక్కచుడు రామినప్పుడు పొక్కుచునీదేవయాన' (Yayati. iii. 126.) grieved at his not coming or at his non-arrival.

(p. 1281) sambandhamu sam-bandhamu. [Skt.] n. Connection, relation, relationship, relevancy, affinity. సంపర్కము, చుట్టరికము, చేరిక, కూడిక, పొందిక. నీ సంబంధమే నాకు కారాదు I cannot endure having anything to do with you. సంబంధి sam-bandhi. n. One who is connected by marriage. ఇచ్చిపుచ్చుకొన్నవాడు, సంబంధము చేసినవాడు, చుట్టము. ఆయన మా సంబంధి he is my kinsman. ఆమె మా సంబంధురాలు she is a connection of ours. సంబంధించు sam-bandhintsu. v. n. To be related to or connected with, to have to do with. చేరు, సంబంధము కలిగియుండు.

(p. 1344) suriya or సురె suriya. [from Skt. ఛురిక.] n. A small knife. చురకత్తి. సూరకత్తి. A. vi. 106. 'సుజ్ఞానమను వాడిసురియచేపట్టి.' HD. v. 1435. 'సురియ బట్టనచ్చుశూరుండుకారాదు.' Vema. i. 176. సురియాళు or సురెయాళు suriyāḷu. (సురియ+ఆళు.) n. A Pariab. మాలవాడు.
