(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 277) kālamu kālamu. [Skt.] n. Time, occasion, period. Season, weather. The tense of a verb. Death చావు. Blackness నలుపు. భూతభవిష్యద్వర్తమానకాలములు the past, future, and present tenses. కాలముచేయు to die. వర్షాకాలము the rainy season. శీతకాలము winter. ఎండకాలము summer. the bright fortnight or moonlight weather. చీకటికాలము the dark fortnight. కాలముజరుపు to demur: to put off. మీరు ఎట్లా కాలము జరుపుకొంటున్నారు how do you pass your time, or how do you live? కాలత్రయము at the three times of the day, morning, noon and night, or, the present, past and future. కాలత్రయములందున్ను perpetually. కాలకంఠము kāla-kaṇṭhamu. n. The black-throat, i.e., a sparrow పిచ్చిక. A peacock నెమలి. A wagtail కాటుకపిట్ట. కాలకంఠుడు or కాలకంధరుడు kāla-kaṇṭhuḍu. An epithet of Siva. కాలకూటము kāla-kūṭamu. n. Passing or spending time. విద్యాకాలక్షేపము literary pursuits. వట్టికాలక్షేపము mere pastime. గ్రంథకాలక్షేపము reading. కాలక్షేపముచేయు to pass one's time, నీవు ఇప్పువు ఎట్లా కాలక్షేపము చేస్తున్నావు how do you now live? కాలక్రయము kāla-krayamu. n. The price of the day: the present rate; the current price. కాలఖండము kāla-khaṇḍamu. The liver. కారిజము. కాలచక్రము. kāla-chakramu. The circle of time. కాలజ్ఞముల kālagnyamu. A cock, as knowing the hour. కాలజ్ఞవత్రి kālagnyapa/ /ri. n. A cock, also, the cuckoo. 'కాలజ్ఞపత్రిరుతం బెట్లు చెలంగుమానకుపితస్త్రీ కర్ణదంభళియై.' A. v. 110. కాలజ్ఞానము kāla-gnyānamu. n. Knowledge of time Predictive knowledge. Certain histories or legends are written under this name, as the విద్యారణ్యకాలజ్ఞానము, the సర్వజ్ఞకాలజ్ఞానము, the చెన్నబసవకాలజ్ఞానము being the visions or predictions regarding particular saints. కాలజ్ఞుడు kālagnyuḍu. n. An astrologer జ్యోతిష్యుడు. కాలధర్మము. kāla-dharmamu. n. The debt of nature. Death మురణము. అకాలమ్పత్వువు untimely death. కాలప్రవృత్తి kāla-pravritti. n. Evacuation. నేడు నాకు కాలప్రవృత్తికాలేదు I had no motion to-day. కాలయాపనము kāla-yāpanamu. n. Delay, loss of time. కాలవహ్ని kāla-vahni. n. The devouring flames destined to burn up the world. A consuming fire, a conflagration. కాలవిళంబము kāla-vīḷambamu. n. Tardiness, loss of time, delay. కాలసూత్రము kāla-sūtramu. n. A name of a region in the hell of the Hindu Purānas. కాలహరణము kāla-haraṇamu. n. Delay, loss of time. కాలాంతకుడు kāl-āntakuḍu. n. One who brings the end. An epithet of Siva. కాలాంతరము kāl-āntaramu. n. Another time. కాలాంతరమందు or కాలాంతరేణ through the lapse of time, at another time. కాలాతీతము kal-ātītamu. n. Delay, loss of time. కాలాతీతమైనది it is now too late. కాలార్కుడు kāl-ārkuḍu. The sun that at the last day shall scorch up the world. కాలావధి kāl-āvadhi. n. The end of a year or season. కాలావసానము kāl-āvasānamu. n. The end of time, i.e., death. కాలికము kālikamu. adj. Regarding time. బహుకాలికమైన of long standing. ఈషత్కాలికమైన temporary, momentary. కాలోచితము kāl-ōchitamu. adj. Seasonable. కాలోచితపుమాటలు such words as suited his purpose.

(p. 1008) muppūṭa mup-pūṭa. [Tel. మూడు + పూట.] adv. At the three (పూటలు) times; viz., morning, noon, and night: continually. మూడు కాలములయందు. 'ముప్పూటనిమ్మార్గమున జరియింప.' BD. vi. 26.

(p. 1008) mupproddu mup-proddu. [Tel. మూడు + ప్రొద్దు.] adv. All day long, the livelong day, త్రికాలములయందు. BD. v. 1223.

(p. 1155) vārakamu vārakamu. [Tel.] n. A stipend: pay given in advance: money advanced to cultivators to be received again without interest when the crop is reaped. సాగుబడి కాలములో ఇచ్చి ఫలకాలములో వడ్డి లేకుండ మళ్లీ రాబట్టుకొనురూకలు, తకావి. 'వలసి నజీతంబువారకంబులను కొలదిమీరిగనిచ్చి కూడు కనుండు.' L. iv. 113.

(p. 1253) śītamu ṣītamu. [Skt.] adj. Cold, chilly, frigid. చల్లని. n. Coldness, chilliness. చల్లన. శీతకరుడు or శీతాంశుడు ṣīta-karuḍu. n. The moon. చంద్రుడు. శీతజ్వరము ṣīta-jvaramu. n. Ague, fever accompanied by shivering. శీతదుక్కి ṣīta-dukki. n. Ploughing a field in winter against sowing next spring. ఎండకాలములో విత్తడమునకై వానకాలములో దున్నియుంచడము. శీతనగము ṣīta-nagamu. n. The cold mountain, i.e., the Himalaya. శీతభేది ṣīta-bhēdi. n. A slimy diarrhoea or dysentery. శీతలము ṣītalamu. n. Coldness, cold, coolness, chilliness, frigidity. చలవ, శైత్యము. adj. Cold, చల్లని.

(p. 1331) siṃhamu simhamu. [Skt.] n. A lion. The sign Leo. (In composition,) Eminent, chief, మృగేంద్రము, అయిదవరాసి. శ్రేష్ఠము. సింహము or సింహపుపలక a large piece of timber, లావాటిమాను. కవిసింహము a noble poet. సింహస్వప్నము. (lit. the elephant's dream of his mortal foe the lion.) a killing thought, a dreadful apprehension. సింహలలాటము (corrupted into సింహతలాటము) an ornament in the form of a lion's head, the figure carved on the front of the pole of a Hindu litter. సింహద్వారము simha-dvāramu. n. The portal or front gate of a house, తలవాకిలి. సింహనాదము simha-nādamu. n. A loud cry, a war cry or war whoop. Huzzas. క్ష్వేళ, యుద్ధకాలములో భటులు అరిచే అరుపు, బొబబ్బ. సింహసంహననుడు simha-samhananuḍu. n. Lit. one who kills a lion, i.e., a very handsome person, a man of noble presence or figure. సర్వాంగసుమదరుడు. సింహావలోకనము simh-āva-lōkanamu. n. Lit, a lion's look Retrospection. A trick in versification consisting of making each line begin with the last word of the preceeding one. వెనుకకు మళ్లిమళ్లి చూచుచుపోవడము, పద్యములో ముందుచెప్పిన పదమును మళ్లీయెత్తుచు రావడము. 'ఇదిమనోహర కాంతికింపైన బింబంబు, బింబంబు గాదిది బెగడుకెంపు, కెంపుగాదిది తేటియొంపనిన మంకెన, మంకెనగాదిదిమంచిచిగురు.' T. iii. 63. సింహాసనము simk-āsanamu. n. A lion seat, a seat or throne supported by sculptured lions, a throne, నృపాసనము, భద్రాసనము, రాజపీఠము. సింహాసవస్థుడు simh-āsana-sthuḍu. n. One who is enthroned. పట్టాభిషిక్తుడు. సింహి simhi. n. A lioness. ఆడుసింహము. సింహి or సింహిక. n. The mother of Rāhu. రాహువుయొక్క తల్లి.

(p. 1335) sīta sīta. [Skt.] n. A furrow, the track of the ploughshare, నాగటిచాలు. The name of Rama's wife. రామునిభార్య. The river Ganges, గంగ. సీతారామర్పణముగా చేసినదానము a gift made in the sacred names of Sīta and Rāma, a solemn gift. సీతకాటుకలు sīta-kāṭukalu. n. plu. (Lit. white and black) A sort of rice. ధాన్యభేదము. సీతమ్మ పురుగునూలు sīt-amma-purugu-nūlu. n. A certain parasitical plant, Cuscuta reflexa. వానకాలములో పొదలమీద అల్లుకొనే ఒకతీగ. సీతాకోకచిలక sītā-kōka-chilaka. n. A butterfly. చిత్రవిచిత్రమైన వర్ణములును ఏనుగుచెవులవలె పెద్దరెక్కలునుగల ఒక పురుగు. సీతాఫలము sītā-phalamu. n. The white custard apple, Annona squamosa, గండగాత్రము. సీతాభోగములు sītā-bhōgamulu. n.
