(p. 1105) lu lu. [Tel.] n. The sing of the plural in Telugu. It is probably a corruption of the Sanskrit word గురు. In the Ujjayani or Middle Indian dialect, as seen, according to Cunningham, in the Girnar, Rupenath and other inscriptions of Asoka, the word గురు (guru) first occurs in the form of గులు (gulu). Cf. గళ్ used in Tamil and గళు in Kanarese. కులలు as a plural ending occurs in a few words in Telugu, as కొలకులు. Vide Seshagiri Sastri's Notes on Telugu Grammar. Originally there was no sign of the plural in the Dravidian tongues. See Caldwell. The use of లు as a plural sign was finally extended to other than Masculine nouns, as తమ్ములు, స్త్రీలు, చెట్లు, &c.
