(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 1) a a. 7. [Tel.] A suffix meaning 'By oneself without the help of another'. సర్వమును నీవ యెరుగుదువు. Or, without a rival, e. g., 'శత్రుక్షయంబు చేసి యెవ్వరికి నీక తామ యేలు చుండెమనియెడి మోహంబున.' భాగ. xii 18.

(p. 2) aṅkakāḍu anka-kāḍu. [Tel. Kan. అంకకాఱ.] n. One who is distinguished by a sign, గురుతుకలవాడు. The leader. One who excites quarrels. కలహప్రియుడు. 'అమరుడు కలహమున కంకకాడయి కాలు ద్రవ్య.' ఆముక్త. v. 84.

(p. 2) aṅkaṇamu ankanamu. [Tel. related to అంగ and అడుగు, the foot; borrowed by Skt. from Dravidian languages. Cf. Kittel and Gundert.] n. The act of branding or marking. Intercolumniation. Apartment. The space between any two beams, or pillars. రెండు దూలముల, లేక, స్తంభముల నడిమి ప్రదేశము. నలుచదరపుచోటు; తొట్టికట్టు. అంకణమునకు రూపాయి బాడిగ' the rent of each apartment is one rupee. మీదెన్ని అంకణముల యిల్లు how many apartments are there in your house? how big is it?

(p. 2) aṅkapāḷi anka-pāḷi. [Tel. Kan. & Skt.] n. An embrace. The lap, hip or haunch. ఆలింగనము. అంకప్రదేశము, తొడ. 'అంకపాళినటద్దుకూలాంచలము' మను. i. 12; and vii. 100.

(p. 2) aṅkapoṅkamulu or అంకపొంకాలు anka-ponkamulu [Tel.] n. Fierceness, fury, violence. Enmity, opposition. విరోధము బిడ్డకు జ్వరము అంకపొంకములుగా వచ్చినది the child was attacked with a violent fever. [Other forms are అంకాపొంకములు and అంకాపొంకాలు.]

(p. 2) aṅkamu ankamu. [Tel. Drav. word borrowed by Skt. √ అన్్క్ = to move in a curve.] n. A ma spot, badge. బిరుదాంకము = బిరుదు గురుతు. 'అంకపురాజింక.' వసు. ii. 11. The haunch or part above the hip. A chapter or section. An act in a play. Proximity. A numerical figure, a cipher. A military show, a sham fight. వింతపోరు, చిత్రయుద్ధము. 'అంకగతుడైన దైత్యుని నాగ్రహమున.' భాగ. A fault, a sin, Objection, cavil ఆక్షేపము. 'అంకముసేయవచ్చునలయయ్యలమున్నుగ బ్రస్తుతించెదన్.' మైరా. i. అంకతలము or అంకపీఠి the lap, the part on which an infant sits, as on the lap. 'నయనీయంకతలంబునన్నిదుర నూనంజేయగా వేడెదన్.' విక్ర iii. 94. అంకుడు n. He who is marked or distinguished గురుతుగలవాడు. మృగాంకుడు the moon.

(p. 2) aṅkavanne aṉka-vanne. [Tel.] n. A stirrup, or the strap that supports it అంగుపడి; 'ఇలబాదద్వయి రాయ నల్కొసగు నెందేబారుచో నంకవన్నెలురెండై.' ఆముక్త. ii. 29.

(p. 3) aṅkiñcu ankinṭsu. [Tel.] v. t. & i. 1. To raise, take up, lift up. భుజములంకించు shrug the shoulders. 2. To move about, to brandish, ఆడించు, ౛ళిపించు. 'కరవాలంబంకించి యంగదుభజాంతరంబు బిట్టు వ్రేసి.' ద్వి.రా. 3. To turn to one side త్రిప్పు. 'నమ్మెగమంకించి.' విర్వ. ఊ: viii. 4. To hold, పట్టుకొను. 'మారుతసుతుండు ఘనగదాదండ మంకించి కదలుటయును.' జై. భా. ii. 47. 5. To adopt, take or receive. అవలంబించు. 'ధర్మమేజయమనుమాట తగుగదాయని కొంతధైర్యమంకించి.' సారం. 278. 6. To look bright ఉల్లసిల్లు. 'పంకజభవాండమండపంబు సంకుచేసిన పొంకంబున నంకించుచు.' వసు. iv. 23. 7. To extol, applaud పొగడు: 'సముచితభాషణంబుల నంకించుచున్న.' భాగ. viii. 134.

(p. 3) aṅkitamu ankitamu. [Skt.] a. Marked, spotted. Counted, numbered. అంకితము n. A dedication. కృతి. ఆ గ్రంథమును రాజునకు అంకితము చేసినాడు he dedicated that book to the king.

(p. 3) aṅkiḷlu or అంకులు ankiḷḷu. [Tel. from అంగిలి+కీళ్లు] n. plu. The joints of the cheek bones; the maxillary joints. అతనికి అంకిళ్లు పడిపోయినవి he has lock-jaw.

(p. 3) aṅkuramu ankuramu. [Skt.] n. A germ, a sprout, a bud. మొలక. నఖాంకురములు nail-marks, ప్రేమాంకురము the germ of love. నంశాంకురము నిలిచేలాగు దత్తుచేసికొనెను he adopted a son to preserve the stem of his family. ఆయనకు అంకురములేనందున as he left no heir.
