(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 118) āmiṣamu or హామిషము āmishamu. [H.] n. Means, property, worth, resources, gross produce. అయిన౛ు. ఆ గ్రామమునకు పోయి ఆమిషము చూచుకొని వచ్చినాడు he went to the village and examined what its resources were. 'తనహామిషము అమ్మి ఆ విలువలో కొంత దాచివేసి' Pritchetts Acts v. 1.

(p. 451) cūcu ṭsūṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To see, to look, view, observe, perceive. To consider, meditate, think on. To visit. To wait. To take care, be on one's guard. To regard, care for. To try, to attempt, to see to. To experience, try, prove by any sense. చేతితో చూస్తిని I felt it with my hand. చవిచూస్తిని, రుచిచూస్తిని I tasted it. To estimate, to judge. రాజూచు to acknowledge the receipt. మరలిపోవజూచు to think of going back. అతని ప్రాణముచూడక not caring for his life. సమయముచూచు or తరిచూచు to watch for an opportunity. ఉండజూచు to overhaul,to see that a thing is there. నన్ను చంపజూచిరి they tried to kill me. ప్రేమలొలుకు చూపుల జూచి casting glances that beam with love. సరిచూచు to examine, to see if a thing is right, to check. వాసనచూచు to smell. చెయ్యిచూచు to feel the pulse. వాడు చెప్పే మాటలు చూడు attend to what he says. అతని పని చూస్తున్నాను I am acting for him. నెలదినములమట్టుకు చూస్తిని I waited for a month. చూచుకొను ṭsūṭsu-konu. v. a. To see or perceive. To look silently, look for ourself.

(p. 425) cūcukamu chūchukamu. [Skt.] n. A nipple or teat. స్తనాగ్రము.

(p. 432) cellu chellu. [Tel.] v. n. To pass (as time), కడచు. To be spent or exhausted (as money), సెలవగు. To be over, terminate అయిపోవు. To die చచ్చు. To pass current (as a story or a coin.) To suffice, to be valid. To belong to, to pertain to, to be appropriate, suit, correspond to, తగు, శక్యమగు. To happen, to be accomplished కొనసాగు. To be paid or discharged (with reference to debt.) దీనికి నాకు చెల్లినది I have done with it. చెల్లురా well done! చెల్లే or చెల్లిన p|| Valid, current, fit, proper, applicable, efficacious. చెల్లని uncurrent, inapplicable, inadmissible. చెల్లుబడి chellu-baḍi. n. Authority అధికారము. చెల్లించు chellinṭsu. v. a. To pass (time, life, a rule, &c.), to pay, liquidate, to fulfil. To apply or put to a right use. చెల్లు chellu. n. Payment. చెల్లుపెట్టుకొను to credit in accounts or strike a balance. చెల్లుచీటి a receipt for payment. చెల్లుచూచుకొను to consider a sum as paid.

(p. 708) pani pani. [Tel.] n. Work, a task. కర్మము. Business, employment, వ్యాపారము. Workmenship, శిల్పము. ఈ కట్టడమునందు మంచిపని చేసియున్నారు there is good workmanship in this building. An affair, act, matter. Service, utility, purpose, object, intention, design. ప్రయోజనము. An order, duty, నియోగము. పనిమీద ఉన్నాడు he is busy. మంచిపని very well, well, good. మంచిపనిచేసినావు you did well or right. అతని పనిచూస్తున్నాను I am engaged in his service: I am acting for him. అతనిపని తీర్చినారు they settled his business, or they killed him. ఇక్కడ నీకేమిపని what business have you here? This word is sometimes omitted in translating; as in నీపనిపట్టిస్తాను I will punish you. ఇంతపనికి నన్నేల వెంటబెట్టుకొనివచ్చినావు why have you brought me for such a trifle or pretence? పనికిమాలి (or) పనిచెడి కూర్చున్నాడు he is sitting idle. వారు వ్యాధిచేత పనిచెడిరి they became infirm through illness. వానితో విరోధము పనికిరాదు he will not stand quarrelling. దాన్ని సంపాదించడము ఎంతపని it is no great matter to get it. నాపని చెరిపినారు they spoiled my work. పనిచెరువుకథలు idle stories. పనికి వచ్చే useful. పనికివచ్చే పిల్లకాయ a promising boy. పనికిరాని or పనికిమాలి useless. అక్కడికి నీవు ఏపనిమీద పోయినావు useless. అక్కడికి నీవు ఏపనిమీద పోయినావు about what business did you go there? నీపనిని నీవు చూచుకొనుము mind your own business. అక్కడికి పోవలసినపనిలేదు there is no need of going there. ఇప్పట్లో వానిపని యిట్లు ఉన్నది he is now in this state. అట్లు చెప్ప పని లేదు there is no need of saying so. పనిగొను pani-gonu. v. a. To undertake a work, to engage in a business. పూనుకొను. To employ, నియోగించు. 'పనిగొనవుతెలియగ బరికించి చూచిన.' Vēma. పనితనము pani-ta-namu. n. Workmanship, elegance. పనితనముగల ఒక మంచము a handsome bed. పనితొడవులు pani-toḍarulu. n. Worked or embossed jewels. పనిపడు or పనివడు pani-paḍu. v. n. To busy oneself with. to engage in, పూనుకొను. To concern oneself with, అక్కరపడు. పనివడి or పనిపడి pani-paḍi. adv. Intentionally. కావలెనని, ప్రయత్నపూర్వకముగా. 'పరులను పనిపడి దూషించెనేని పాపము వచ్చున్.' V. P. iv. 249. పనివాటులు jobs, work. పనిముట్టు or పనిమటము pani-muṭṭu. n. An instrument, tool, impelement. కొరముట్టు, ఉపకరణము. 'పనిమటములుగొంచు పయనమైరండు.' Pal. 314. పనివంచు, పని పంచు or పనిగొను pani-vanṭsu. v. a. To command. నియోగించు. పనివాడు pani-vāḍu. n. A servant: a good workman. పనివిను pani-vinu. v. n. To obtain permission, to take leave. To proceed, to go or come. 'దేవర కీర్తి వెక్కసంబుగ జెప్పవిని చూడగోరి, పనివిని నేను మాభాగ్యంబుకతన.' H.D.i. 847.

(p. 800) poṅgu pongu. [Tel.] v. n. To effervesce; to boil or bubble up, overflow, boil over. To swell. To forment. To exult, to be overjoyed, elated, to be in ecstasy. సంతోషించు. To become proud, గర్వించు. పొంగి బోర్లపడు to boil over with pride or delight. ఎండచేత కండ్లు పొంగినవి the eyes are inflamed by the glare. పొంగునీళ్లు boiling water. పొంగు pongu. n. Effervescence, boiling or bubbling up, overflowing. Excess of joy. సంతోషము. Pride, గర్వము. Eruption of the measles. Boiling water in which rice is to be cooked, ఎసరుకాగిననీళ్లు, చిట్టుడుకునీళ్లు. ఎసరుపొంగి పోతున్నది the water is boiling over. నీ పొంగుకుంగ may your pride perish. ఇదియేమి చూచుకొన్న పొంగు on what do you pride yourself? పొంగులక్షణము symptoms of an eruption of measles. పొంగుప్రాలు pongu-prālu. n. A sort of grain. పొంగలించు pongalinṭsu. v. n. To stand erect; to be proud, నిక్కు. పొంగారు pong-āru. (పొంగు+ఆరు.) v. n. To be full, నిండారు., To swell out, ఉబుకు. To rejoice, సంతోషించు. To excel, to be proud, అతిశయించు, విజృంభించు, నిక్కు 'తూర్యములపటుధ్వాన మడరినింగి పొంగారె నత్యంత నిశ్చలంబులయ్యె సైనికినికరంబులద్భుతముగ.' M. VIII. iii. 273. పొంగించు ponginṭsu. To boil. To delight, to please much. చేరెడుబియ్యము పొంగించుకొనినాడు he boiled a handful of rice.

(p. 1040) mona mona. [Tel.] n. The point, end, extremity. ఆగ్రము, తీక్ష్ణాగ్రము. An army, or detachment, సేన. A tube. తెగ. A military array. వ్యూహము. A tribe, తెగ. The front, ముందు. 'మన మొనలకువశముగాదు మరలు పమింకన్.' M. VI. ii. 97. 'లోమొన, వెలిమొన, ఉసిమొన, ముమ్మొన, చతురమొన, పుణ్యపుమొన, పాపపుమొన, దాటడుగుమొన, కదలుమొన, అరమీటుమొన, నెరమీటుమొన, సరితాళంపుమొన, లాదిగాగల పదిరెండు మొనల వారితెలిసిరి.' H. i. 245. మొనలారిపోయినకత్తి a knife with a blunt point. adj. Last, furthest, utmost. కడపటి. మొనకట్టు mona-kaṭṭu. v. n. To attempt with enthusiasm, ఉత్సహించు. n. Joy, rejoicing, enthusiasam, ఉత్సాహము. An amulet or drug used as a charm, పెట్టుమందులలో నొకటి. ఒకానొక స్తంభనమాలిక. 'ఇదిదారికట్టు మొనకట్టిది, కాంతావశ్యకరణమిది.' S. i. 18. 'జలాగ్నిస్థంభములును, మొనకట్టును వాకట్టును.' H. i. 174. adj. Rejoicing, enthusiastic, ఉత్సాహకరమైన. మొనకాడు or మొనగాడు mona-kāḍu. n. A leader of an army, a hero, a principal; a ringleader, శూరుడు, సేనాధిపతి, ముఖ్యుడు. దొంగలమొనగాడు a ringleader among thieves. మొనకొను Same as మొనయు. (q. v.) మొనచేయు mona-chēyu. v. n. To face or front in battle. మోహరించు. మొనచన్ను mona-tsannu. n. A nipple. Lit the tip of the breast. చూచుకము. మొనతప్పు mona-tappu. v. n. To be turned away as the face, to turn away from, విముఖమగు. 'మొనతప్పితిమి రణమున మన మకట మువ్వురము.' భార. సౌ. i. మొనయు monayu. v. n. and v. a. To be, appear, happen, కలుగు. To busy oneself. to engage in. To prepare, be ready, attempt, పూను, పనిపడు. To prepare for battle, రణోద్యోగముచేయు. To cover, to rest upon. ఒగ్గు, కమ్ము, ఆనించు. 'మొండి మాటలాడి మొనసియుండువిరక్తి యమునిగెల్వనెచట నలవిగాదు.' Vēma. 864. 'మొనయు చింతాశ్రేణిమూక విప్పు.' Swa. iv. 148. టీ మొనయు, కమ్ముకొనునట్టి. మొనపు or మొనయించు monapu. v. a. To cause to attempt, పూనజేయు. To cause to happen, కలుగజేయు. To put, place. మోపు, ఉంచు. 'అనినన్ గైటభదైత్య వైరి, దరహాసాంకూరముల్ మోవిపై, మొనపంగొం డొక నిల్చియవ్వనమున్.' Parij. iv. 12. మొనపు. n. An attempt, పూనిక.

(p. 1139) valayu valayu. [Tel.] v. n. To be liked, desired or wanted. ఇష్టమగు, విహితమగు. To be needful, or necessary, ఆవశ్యకమగు. To be proper, యుక్తమగు. To be surrounded, వలయతమగు. 'మృగమువలయంబారెన్.' పంచ. నా. ii. 'స్వబుద్ధిరాజుకు విశేషింపవలయు' (P. i. 391.) the use of his own judgment is much needed in a king. 'కయ్యమునకు నెయ్యమునకు వియ్యమునకు సమతవలయు.' (ib. ii. 47.) in combat, in inter-marriage, and in friendship equality is wanted; or, there should be a similarity. 'ఔగాములరయవలయు.' (ib. iv. 431.) you should look to the chances of gain or loss, of success or failure. వలె, వలెను, వలసినది or వలయును are added as auxiliaries, to the Root in the Infinitive of any verb; to give the idea of obligation or necessity; నేను ఇమటికి పోవలెను I must go home. నీవు ఇక్కడికి రావలెను you must come here, you should come here, I hope you will come here. తమదయ రావలెను మా దరిద్రము తీరవలెను I hope your favour will come and that my poverty will be removed. ఆయన రేపో ఎల్లుండో రావలెను he must be here tomorrow or the next day, i.e., we expect him here tomorrow or the next day. వాడు దానితమ్ముడుగా ఉండవలెను I suppose he must be her brother. నాకు ఆ పుస్తకము కావలెను I want that book. వాణ్ని చంపియుండవలెను they must have killed him. నీకు అట్లురావలెను this serves you right. నీవు సందేహింపవలసినదిలేదు you need not doubt it, there is no occasion to doubt it. వాణ్ని పిలువవలెనని అక్కడికి వెళ్లితిని I went there to call him. ఈ పని చేయవలెనని పోవుచుండగా as I was going there to do this. జగడమాడవలెనని వస్తివా did you come on purpose (or wanting) to quarrel? వలసి (the past p|| of వలయు.) ఇవ్వవలసి యిస్తిని I paid it, because I had to. 'నిశాచరునుద్యోగంబుచూచుకొనవలసి.' Swa. iv. 163. అట్లు చేయవలసివచ్చును it will become necessary to do so. వలసిన (past part of వలయు) is used as an affix (similar to the Latin-ibilis or endus). చెల్లింపవలసిన సొమ్ము money due, the sum payable. 'వ;సినసంపదల్ గలుగవా.' T. ii. 34. టీ వలసిన, కావలసినటువంటి. వలసె or వలసెను (the past tense of వలయు) it became necessary, or requisite. వానితో చెప్పవలసె I was obliged to tell him. 'వినిపింపరాని కార్యము వినిపింపగవలసె.' Swa. iv. 176. The negative aorist of this, వలవదు, వలదు, See under వలదు.

(p. 1277) sandu or సంది sandu. [from Skt. సంధి.] n. A small opening, a fissure, crack, hole, బొత్త, చిల్లి, బీటిక. Space, an interval. ఎడము, మధ్యప్రదేశము, మధ్యకాలము. A lane, a narrow street, చిన్నవీధి, గల్లీ. A nook, corner, మూల. A backyard, పెరడు. A period of time, an opportunity, సమయము, సందర్బము. A direction or quarter. చంకసందు the armpit. వేళ్లసందు the space between two fingers. ఇక్కడ సందు విడువు leave a space here. సందిచ్చు to give room or opportunity. వాడు ఎవరికిని సందియ్యకుండా మాట్లాడుతాడు he will let nobody else get a word in, he gives no one an opportunity of speaking. వారిద్దరిసందున వీడు నలిగిపోవుచున్నాడు between the two this man is ruined. సందులు గొందులంతా వెతికినాడు he hunted in every hole and corner. సందుచూచి లోగా చొరబడినాడు he took an opportunity and rushed in సందువాకిలి the back-door, పెరటిగుమ్మము. సందుముట్టు menses occurring at intervals, that is, at irregular periods. 'నేటికి నబ్బెసందు.' T. iii. 87. అనగా నేడు సమయము చిక్కెను. సందిక్రంతజగడములు petty disputes, అల్పమైనజగడములు. సందుకట్టు sandukaṭṭu. n. An interval, మధ్యకాలము. గ్రహణపు సందుకట్టు the time that an eclipse lasts. అమావాస్య సందుకట్టు the period of new moon. నేను పోయి వీడు వచ్చే సందుకట్టులో in the interval between my going and his coming. సందుకొను sandu-konu. v. n. To take or seize an opportunity, సమయము చూచుకొను. To extend spread, వ్యాపించు. v. a. To unite with, కూడు. To be joined to, to marry, పరిగ్రహించు. సందుకొట్టు or సందుతగులు sandu-koṭṭu. v. n. To be injured by a ghost. సందుదోషము sandu-dōshamu. n. Demoniac possession. బిడ్డలకు మాససంధియందు కలుగు బాలగ్రహదోషము. ఆ బిడ్డకు సందుదోషము తగిలినది, సందుకొట్టినది or సందుతగిలినది the child is fairy-struck or injured by a ghost that haunts a particular spot. సందుసీసము sandusīsamu. n. A certain feat in wrestling.
