(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 111) āra āṭa. [Tel. from ఆడు] Play, sport, a game: a dance, acting or stage performance. Jest, joke, gambling. ఆటకత్తె, ఆటరి or ఆటది āṭa-katte. [Tel.] n. An actress or public dancer. ఆటకాడు āṭa-kāḍu. n. An actor or dancer. Also a gambler. ఆటగొర్రు āṭa-gorru. n. A rake used in husbandary. ఆటడిగ్గియ A swimming bath. ఆటతోట āṭa-tōṭa. a park. ఉద్యానవనము ఆటపట్టు āṭa-paṭṭu. n. An abode, residence, scene, place. ఆటపాక A playhouse, a theatre. ఆటవిడుపు āṭa-viḍupu. n. A school holiday or play day. ఆటవెలది āṭa-veladi. n. A species of metre ఆటాడు āṭaḍu. (ఆట+ఆడు) v. a. To play a play, to dance a dance, to act.

(p. 302) kūṭapākalamu kūṭapākalamu. [Skt.] n. A fever, as a disease which attacks elephants. పిత్తజ్వరము. ఏనుగులకు వచ్చే ఒక జ్వరము. A kiln. 'ఎవ్వానిక్రోధంబు హీనదుర్జనమదేభ పరంపటలకు కూటపాకలంబు.' Vēdānta. Ras. i. 16.

Sweat, perspiration, moisture. స్వేదము. నొసలు చెమటకార్చి బ్రతికేవాడను I live by the sweat of my brow. చిరుచెమట gentle perspiration. చెమటకాయలు chemaṭa-kāyalu. n. Prickly heat. చెమటపాత chemaṭa-pāta. n. A sweaty cloth. The glove worn by falconers, for the hawk to perch on. చెమరుపోతు or చెమటగొట్టు chemaru-pōtu. n. One who perspires profusely మిక్కిలి చెమటగలవాడు. చెమర్చు, చెమరించు, చెమ్మరించు or చెమటపోయు or చెమటపట్టు chemarṭsu. v. n. To sweat, to perspire. చెమరు. chemaru. n. Moisture, oozing. v. n. To sweat, to ooze.

(p. 488) ṭapā or టపాలు ṭapā. [H.] n. The post or mail, the 'tappal.' A station or stage. టపాలమీదపోయినాడు he travelled by post.

(p. 556) tokkaṭa , తొక్కటము, త్రొక్కట or త్రొక్కటము tokkaṭa. [Tel. from తొక్కు.] n. Distress, grief. వ్యసనము. A scrape or hobble. సంకరము. ఆ తొక్కట యెరగను I know nothing of the trouble. తొక్కటించు tokkaṭ-inṭsu. v. a. To grieve, distress, annoy. తొక్కటపడు or త్రొక్కటపడు tokkaṭa-paḍu. v. n. To be troubled. సంకటపడు. తొక్కటపాటు or త్రొక్కటపాటు tokkaṭa-pāṭu. n. Distress, trouble. సంకటపాటు.

(p. 573) trokku or తొక్కు trokku. [Tel.] v. n. To tread, to trample. త్రొక్కుడు, తొక్కుడు, త్రొక్కట, తొక్కటము or తొక్కట trokkuḍu. n. Trampling. తొక్కుట. Also a plank of wood which a weaver treads upon while weaving a cloth. త్రొక్కుడుబిళ్ల or తొక్కుడుబిళ్ల trokkuḍu-biḷḷa. n. A certain game played by children.

(p. 695) paṭāki paṭāki. [H.] n. A cracker, a kind of firework. టపాకి. టపాసు.

(p. 718) parōḍhavillu pariḍhavillu. [Skt.] v. n. To shine, to give light. వెలుగు, ప్రకాశించు. To excel, అతిశయిల్లు. To go on, to get on, ప్రవర్తిల్లు, నడచు. 'ఎచ్చోట వీక్షింపగా చమత్కృతి నాటపాటలు మాటలు పరిఢవిల్ల.' Bilh. iii. 177. పరిభవించు pariḍha-vinṭsu. v. a. To carry on. నడపు, పరిఢవిల్లజేయు. To excel, అతిక్రమించు. To bear, to carry, ధరించు. '౛వ్వాదిపిల్లలు ప్రియమెలర్ప, బట్టిపదిలంబు గావించెపరిఢమించి.' Ruckmāng. iii. 104.

(p. 736) pāta or పాత్ర pāta. [Tel.] adj. Old, decayed, worn out. బహుదినములనాటిది. పనుపడిన. పాతకరణము the old clerk, i.e., the former one (not one who is aged.) పాతగుర్రము a horse that has been with the owner for a considerable time. అది పాతసంగతి that is an old story. n. A cloth, clothes, usually conjoined with the word, బట్ట: thus, బట్టపాత clothing and raiment. An old cloth, జీర్ణవస్త్రము. పాతగిలు, పాతగిల్లు, ప్రాతగిలు or ప్రాతగిల్లు pātagilu. v. n. To grow old. పాతృదియగు. పాతకాపు pāta-kāpu. n. An old resident. పాతరికము pātarikamu. n. Oldness. Experience.

(p. 745) pāla pāla. [Tel. from పాలు milk.] n. The bird called the Indian Roller, boracias indica (F.B.I.) the flight of which is consulted as an omen. It is erroneously called a blue jay. Various varieties are called గొర్రెపాలపిట్ట and మేకపాలపిట్ట. See Jerdon No. 243. A treatise on Omens says. 'పాలగరుడతప్ప పక్షిజాతులకెల్ల నెడమమండికుడికి నెగయవలయు.' పాల or పాలతీగ n. A certain tree, ఇక్షుగంధ, క్షీరికావృక్షము; of which there are various species as, అడవిపాలతీగ Nerium reticulatum, కాకిపాలతీగ Asclepias asthmatica, దూదిపాలతీగ Asclepias volubilis, మట్టపాలతీగ Convolvulus paniculatus; చిరుపాల, అనగా ఉటని. Q. మన్నుపాల, అనగా ఉత్పల కృష్ణ. Q. పాలపండు, అనగా కనిష్ట. Q. Various species of the 'milk plant' are called మేకపాలతీగ, కుక్కపాలతీగ, &c. పాల adj. White. పాలవెండి pure silver. పాలకన్ను pāla-kannu. n. A sort of grain. పాలకూర pāla-kūra. n. A certain pot herb. Oxystelma csculentum. కుక్కపాలకూర a forest plant, Trianthema crystallina,. Rox. ii. 444. పాలగచ్చు, పాలగార or పాలసున్నము pāla-gaṭsṭsu. n. Fine lime plaster. సన్న సున్నపుపూత. పాలబుగ్గలు (S. iii. 435.) Infant's cheeks, బిడ్డలచెక్కిళ్లు. పాలగరువు or పాలగార pāla-garuvu. n. A sort of earth, a whitish marl. పైని యిసుకగల రేగడనేల. పాలగుమ్మ Same as పాలపిట్ట. పాలగొర్రు pāla-gorru. n. A rake used in husbandry. పాలగోకుడు pāla-gokuḍu. n. The butter that sticks to the bottom of a milk pot. పాలచెట్టు pāla-cheṭṭu. n. A species of the Mimusops tree. పాలచేప pāla-chēpa. n. A sort of Salmon. పాలచేరులు or పాలచేర్లు pāla-chērulu. n. The nerves. బీజములకు పైననుండునరాలు, గ౛్జనరాలు. 'సీ పాలచేరులపట్టి తూలింప బలిమి నీడ్చుకొని డొంకలదూరి చుట్టబెట్టు.' Swa. iv. 68. 'సీ కటికినెత్తురులతో గండలుర్లిపడంగ, జేరి పందులపాల చేర్లుకరచు.' S. i. 202. పాలటేకు or పాలతేకు pāla-ṭēku. n. The white wooded teak tree. పాలడ pālaḍa. (పాలు+అడుగు.) n. A shell used as a spoon or ladle in giving milk to a child. పాలతుత్తము or పాలతుత్తరము pāta-tuttamu. n. White vitriol. పాలపండ్లు pāla-panḍlu. n. Milk teeth. Also (from పండు,) a sort of sweet white berries. A. iv. 114. పాలపపడు pāla-pāpaḍu. n. An infant at the breast. పాలవెడిస or పాలవలిస pālapeḍisa. n. The Grey headed Myna, Sturned malabarica (F.B.I.) పాలబొంత pālabonta. n. A fish called the white mullet, Chonos salmoneus. పాలమన్ను pāla-mannu. n.
