(p. 145) īratāra īra-tāra. [Tel.] n. Disorder. తారుమారు. adj. Disordered, confused. తారుమారైన. Here and there, this way and that. తీర్చగూడనిది, ఈగరానిది. హెచ్చుతగ్గులు, ఈరతారలు more or less: some. 'అపుడు సమ్మెటకోలల నంకుశముల జేరుకోలలదీటుల నీరతారయదలుపుల వాహనంబులు చెదరపరచె. '

(p. 183) eccu or హెచ్చు eṭṭsu. [Tel.] n. & adj. Much. అధికము: అధికమైన. ఎచ్ఛుతగ్గులుగా eṭṭsu-taggulu-gā. adv. Insolently. నన్ను ఎచ్చుతగ్గులుగా మాట్లాడినాడు he spoke to me scornfully.

(p. 501) taggu taggu. [Tel.] v. n. To become less, to decrease, diminish fall (in price,) abate, తక్కువగు. To go back, withdraw, retire, వెనుకకుతీయు. తగ్గుమొగ్గులు taggu-moggulu. n. Ups and downs. తగ్గించు tagginṭsu. v. a. To lower, debase, degrade, తగ్గింపు taggimpu. n. A fall, sinking, diminution, reduction. A fall, in price. తగ్గు or తగ్గుదల taggu. n. Decrease, a diminution, abatement తక్కువ.

(p. 735) pāṭu pāṭu. [Tel. from పడు] n. A fall. పడుట. Suffering, శ్రమము. Labour. A movement, an action, చర్య. Distress, misfortune, hardship, mishap, ఆపద. Time, occasion. సమయము. Manner, way, mode, విధము. A declining state. The ebb of the tide. సముద్రపునీరు పొంగి తగ్గుట. రెప్పపాటు (lit: eye-lid-fall.) a wink or blink. బల్లిపాటు the fall of a lizard. చెవిటివాడు పెదవిపారు గ్రహించును a deaf man understands the motions of the lips. వారు పడే పాట్లు చెప్పనలవికాదు the hardships they suffer are indescribable. కుక్కపడేపాట్లు పడుచున్నాడు he leads the life of a dog. ఎన్నిపాట్లు పడినను వాడు చిక్కలేదు though we did all we could we did not find him. వాడు పడ్డపాట్లు వృధాగాపోవునా will all his trouble be in vain. వచ్చినపాటుననే as soon as he comes. అది ఆపాటుననే ఉన్నది it remains as it was, it remains unaltered. అది యేపాటుననున్నదో ఆపాటుననే ఉండనిమ్ము leave it as it is . అదోకపాటుగానుండేనేల a declivity, slope or descent. పోటుపాటు the ebb and flow of a river or sea, బోర్లపాటులు vile pranks. పొరపాటు an error. Added to some verbs it serves as an affix like-tion, -ness or -ment and forms a noun, as నగుబాటు laughter. తగులుబాటు cost, expenditure. దిద్దుబాటు a correction. కుదురుబాటు settlement. ఒంటరిపాటు loneliness. ఒంటరిపాటున alone, unaccompanied. ఆపాటున where-upon, thereupon, on that occasion. పనిపాటులు jobs. పాట్లమారి a drudge, మిక్కిలి శ్రమపడు స్వభావముగలవాడు. పాటుపడు pāṭu-paḍu. To toil, to labour. శ్రమపడు. పాటుసాగించు pāṭu-sāginṭsu. v. n. To cultivate, to begin cultivation operations. పాటునబడు pāṭuva-baḍu. v. n. To come back to the original position. యథాస్థితికివచ్చు.

(p. 818) pōṭu pōṭu. [Tel.] n. A thrust, a stab, a blow. పొడుపు. కత్తిపోటు. A throb of pain. పోదుపు, నొప్పి. The swell of a river, or of the sea, the flow of the tides, high water, సముద్రోల్పణము, నద్యాదులజలవృద్ధి. Heroism, courage, శౌర్యము. A battle, యుద్ధము. వాడు ఇప్పుడు కొంచెము పోటుమీద నున్నాడు he is now drunk. 'నా కొడుకు పోటుమాటలు, నీకేటికి పొసగవాడ.' M. IV. v. 258. పోటుమాటలు అనగా ఎత్తిపొడుపుమాటలు. చెవిపోటు chevi-pōṭu. n. Ear-ache. ఆ కురుపు పోట్లు పొడుస్తున్నది the boil is throbbing. పోటాపోటీ pōṭā-pōṭī. n. Rivalry, emulation, competition, నీకంటే నాకనిపయిబడడము. వానికి నిన్న దర్భపోటుతగిలినది he was invited to the ceremony held on the anniversary of a man's father's death. పోటుపాటు ఎరిగినవాడు one who knows both sides of the question పోటాడు or పోటొగ్గు to get ready for battle. రణోద్యోగము చేయు. పోటుకంబము pōṭu-kambamu. n. A post or pillar which is set up as a prop, ఊతగానిలిపినస్తంభము. పోటుకలుపు pōṭu-kalupu. n. A second weeding, రెండవమారు తీయు కలుపు. పోటుకాడు, పోటుబంటు, పోటుమగడు or పోటుమానిసి pōṭu-kāḍu. n. A hero, a courageous man, శూరుడు. పోటుకోల pōṭu-kōla. n. A sharp pointed stick used as a prop. 'వలలును దెరలు ప్రోగులు చుట్టగాలేదు, పోటుకోలొకటియు బుచ్చలేదు, తెగిన మెకంబుల తేలేదు.' Dhurjati. iii. 96. పోటుగంప pōṭu-gampa. n. A large basket. పోటుపాటు pōṭu-pāṭu. n. The ebb and flow of a tide. Paidim. i. 86. 'నీపోటుపాటున నిపుడిట్లు మమ్ము బోరించితివి.' HD. ii. 1196. నీపోటుపాటున, నీవెచ్చి తగ్గుటచేతను. పోటెక్కించినవాడు pōt-ekkinchina-vāḍu. n. An assailant, one who attacks. ఎదిరించి పైకి వచ్చేవాడు.' పోటెక్కించినవారిమీద ప్రయోగించినవాని సమరపతి వధియించుననియును బెద్దలవలన వినియుందుము.' M. VII. iii. 96. పోటొడ్డు pōt-oḍḍu. v. n. To face in battle, to oppose. యుద్ధానిముఖుడగు. 'పొడిసింగరాజు పోటొడ్డినాడు.' Pal. 410. పోట్లాట pōḷl-āṭa. (పోటులు+ఆట.) n. Fighting; a struggle, dispute, యుద్ధము, కొట్టాట. పోట్లాడు or పోటులాడు pōṭl-āḍu. v. n. To fight, to battle, to struggle, to come to blows. యుద్ధముచేయు. పోట్లావు pōṭl-āvu. n. A cow that butts, పొడిచే స్వభావముగల ఆవు పోటరి or పోటరికాడు pōṭari. (పోటు+అరి.) n. A hero, a brave man. శూరుడు. 'పోటరులైనభర్త లేవురు గలరంటి.' M. IV. ii. 264. పోటరితనము pōṭari-tanamu. n. Heroism. శూరత్వము.

(p. 943) maṭṭi maṭṭi. [Tel.] n. Earth, soil, mud Scurf or dandruff. మట్టితిన్నపామువలె పడియున్నాడు he is as stupid as a snake gorged with mud. మట్టిగుర్రమున నమ్మి యేటిలోదిగుట to rely on a mud horse and go into a river, i.e., to trust to appearances. మట్టితైలము or మట్టినూనె maṭṭi-tadama. n. Earth oil kerosene or petroleum. మట్టాడు maṭṭ-āḍu. (మట్టి + ఆడు.) v. n. & a. To walk. నడచు. To wander, roam, సంచరించు. To spread, వ్యాపించు. To cut to pieces, తనుమాడు.' అత్తూపుగములు తుత్తమురుదొట్టి మట్టాడి అట్టహాసంబుచేసి.' R. v. 191. మట్టియ Same as మట్టి and మట్టె (q. v.) మట్టు maṭṭu. v. a. To tread or trample, to crush. తొక్కు. n. Trampling, walking over. త్రొక్కుడు. Limit, bounds, measure, restriction, extent; moderation. పర్యంతము. ప్రమాణము. మితి, కొలత, తగ్గుదల. A settle or ring of cord, fibre, &c. to prevent a pot from rolling over, కుదురు. A place, ప్రదేశము. పైమట్టు the upper place or part. అడుగుమట్టు the bottom. ఆ బల్లమట్టుపట్టి తీసుకొనిరా measure the plank కావడిమట్టు the frame or bottom of the slings in a Kāvadi. వానికి తెలివిమట్టు he is wanting in sense. వానితో చెప్పినది నాబుద్ధే మట్టు I was a fool to tell him this. ఈ సంవత్సరము జనముమట్టు this year the assembly is but small. వానికి పుణ్యగతులుమట్టు he has no chance of heaven. మట్టుబీర a kind of బీరకాయ (q. v.) మట్టుగిన్నె a cup with a foot or base attached to it. adj. Limited, small. మితము, తక్కువ. మట్టుకు as far as, up to as much as, in regard to, until, as long as. దీనికి ఒకమట్టుమితములేదు there is no end or limit to it. మట్టుమర్యాదలేనివాడు he who has neither modesty nor moderation. మట్టుమీరవద్దు you must not go beyond bounds. అతడు వచ్చువరకు అని దీనికి ఒకమట్టుపెట్టిరి they laid it aside until his arrival, మనసుచెదరనీక మట్టుపెట్టి.' (Vēma. ii. 278.) curbing and restraining the mind. ఈ మట్టున లేచిపోయిరి with this they went away or thereupon they went away. పోడుగుపడి అంతమట్టున వాన నిలిచినది there was a thunderbolt and then the rain ceased. వానికి అంతమట్టుకు తెలియదు he does not know so much. ఎంతమట్టుకు పోయినావు how far did you go? గొంతుమట్టుకు నీళ్లువస్తున్నవి the water is up to the neck. వాడు ఎంతమట్టుకుంటే అంతమట్టుకు సంతోషిస్తాడు he contents himself with as much as he gets. నా ప్రాణములు ఉన్న మట్టుకు as long as I have life. నామట్టుకు నేను ఉంటాను నీమట్టుకు నీవు ఉండు I shall keep to myself, you keep to yourself. బియ్యము కావలసిన మట్టుకు చిక్కును you can get as much rice as you want. సొమ్ములుమట్టుకు నాకు వద్దు as for the jewels I do not want them. అంతమట్టుకు మంచిపని చేస్తిని so far you did well. ఇంతమట్టుకు వచ్చిన తరువాత ఇకనేమి దాక్షిణ్యము when the matter has come to such a push what is the use of delicacy? వానికి తిండిమట్టుకు బాగా కావలెను he cares for nothing but his dinner. నేనుమట్టుకు పోతిని I alone went. వాని ఒళ్లు శానామట్టుకు నాసిగానున్నది his health is in a great measure recovered. మట్టుఅగు. మట్టుకొను or మట్టుపడు maṭṭu-agu. v. n. To lessen or be diminished. తగ్గు, అడగు. కుదురుపడు. రోగము మట్టుపడినది the disease is moderating. వానికి దాహము మట్టుపడినది his thirst was slackened. మట్టుగా maṭṭu-gā. adv. Moderately, మితముగా. వర్షము మట్టుగానున్నప్పుడు when the rain is moderate. దగ్గు మట్టుగానున్నది the cough is now moderate. మట్టుగా తిన్నాడు he ate moderately. మట్టు చేయు or మట్టుపరచు maṭṭu-chēyu. v. a. To lessen, moderate, diminish. తగ్గించు. వానికి జీతము మట్టుచేసినారు they diminished his pay, వానికి జీతము మట్టుచేసినారు they diminished his pay, వానికి జీతము తగ్గించినారు. మట్టుపెట్టు maṭṭu-peṭṭu. v. a. To keep down, suppress, అడచు. To kill, చంపు. మట్టుమిగులు or మట్టుమీరు maṭṭu-migulu. v. n. To exceed the limits, అతిక్రమించు.

(p. 1340) suti suti. [from Skt. శ్రుతి.] n. An accompaniment to an air, the drone accompaniment in music, the running bass, the diapason, the tone of a chord. సంగీతశ్రుతి, శ్రుతి, సుతికూర్చు to put an instrument in tune, to harmonise chords. హెచ్చుసుతి a note set too high. తగ్గుసుతి a note that is too low. సుతిగాడు or సుతికాడు a drone-player, one who plays the bag-pipe. సుతిపోయువాడు. 'నారద సుతిగూర్పనేరవునీవులెమ్మని వీణెటింగుటింగునను మీటు.' N. iv. 139. సుతిమెత్తనివాడు suti-mettani-vāḍu. n. A meek, soft, patient man. సాత్వికుడు, తిన్ననివాడు.

(p. 1392) heccu or ఎచ్చు heṭsṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To increase, grow, multiply, ఆధిక్యము. 'అరవిందములగచ్చలడగించు జిగిహెచ్చు.' Swa. vi. 107. హెచ్చరించు or ఎచ్చరించు heṭstsar-inṭsu. v. a. To encourage, hint at, allude to, advert to, call to memory, warn, సూచనచేయు. హెచ్చరిక or ఎచ్చరిక heṭsṭsar-ika. n. A hint, intimation, precuation, warning, arousing, encouragement. సూచన, జాగ్రత్త. Joy, సంతోషము. 'కుబేరశంకరుల్ సరసనుగొల్వ మ్రొక్కులిడ స్వామి పరాకవధారుదేవ, హెచ్చరికయటంచు కంచుకులు.' N. i. 177. హెచ్చరిల్లు or ఎచ్చరిలు heṭsṭsar-illu. v. n. To increase, grow, improve. అభిపృద్ధినొందు To be encouraged, to beware, to be on the alert. ఎచ్చరిక కలిగియుండు. 'ఏ యుపాయంబు చేసైన సెచ్చరిలగనీక రాక్షసకులము రమేశ్వరుండు తునుముననుశంక.' KP. vi. 26. హెచ్చించు hechch-inṭsu. v. a. To increase, augment, multiply, అధికముచేయు. హెచ్చిల్లు, హెచ్చిలు or ఎచ్చిలు hechch-illu. v. n. To augment, increase, multiply, అధికమగు. హెచ్చు, హెచ్చిన or ఎచ్చిన heṭsṭsu. adj. Exceeding, much, more, excessive, great, superior. అధికమైన, వెలపొడుగైన.' హెచ్చినమైత్రి.' A. iv. 187. నన్ను హెచ్చుతక్కువలుగా మాట్లాడినాడు he reviled me. హెచ్చుతగ్గులుగానుండే భూమి uneven ground, land that is up and down. హెచ్చుగ or హెచ్చుగా heṭsṭsu-ga. adv. Much, more, greatly. అధికముగా. 'వజ్రముల్ పగడాలు తూములన్ హెచ్చుగగొల్తు రెప్పుడు.' T. ii. 19.
