(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 22) akhaṇḍamu a-khaṇḍamu. [Skt.] adj. Whole, entire; abounding; imperishable. సకలమైన, విస్తారమైన. అఖండానందము eternal bliss. అఖండైశ్వర్యము abounding wealth. అఖండకావేరి the main stream of the Cavery. అఖండము n. A permanent lamp in a temple. నిరంతరము మండే దీపము. అఖండిత adj. Unbroken, undivided. Untorn, undisturbed, uninterrupted, unrefuted, continous, imperishable. ఖండింపబడని, అనశ్వరమైన, అఖండతలక్ష్మి imperishable riches.

(p. 32) aṭṭu or అట్టుగా aṭṭu. [Tel.] adv. (A particle) So that, as, according to. అతడు వచ్చేటట్టు వ్రాయుము write a letter so that he may come. మీరు చెప్పినట్టుగా చేస్తిని I did as you bid me. ఆయన చెప్పినట్టు according to his order. వాడు ఇంకా అవతలకు పోవునట్టు అగుపడ్డాడు he seemed as though he would go further. నేను చెప్పినట్టు చేసినాడు he did as I said. వారు సాగిపోయినట్టుగా చెప్పెను he said that they had passed on. అట్టు గాక or అట్లాకాక aṭṭugāka. adv. Without being so. అట్టుల aṭṭula. adv. As soon as, soon after. వెంటనే. 'చెట్టు దిగి వచ్చినట్టుల.' H. ii. 47. Just as. ఆప్రకారము. అట్టే (for అట్లాగే) aṭṭē. [Tel.] adv. Thus. So. In the same manner, as it was. అట్టే ఉండనీ leave it as it is. నొప్పి అట్టే ఉన్నది the pain is in the same state. అట్టే పోయినాడు he went off straightway. అట్టే మాట్లాడుతూ ఉండినాడు he was talking straight on. ఆ గుర్రములట్టే ఉన్నవి the horses are as they were: they are untouched.

(p. 40) atalamu atalamu. [Skt.] n. One of the fabled subterraneous regions, supposed to be immediately below the earth. భూలోకము కింది లోకము. అతలకుతలము n. Disorder, confusion. disturbance. అల్లరి, గలిబిలి, తారుమారు. అతలకుతలమవు v. n. To be routed, scattered, dispersed. గలిబిలియగు, తారుమారగు, చెదిరిపోవు. అతలకుతలముచేయు to make a bustle or great noise, to cause a tumult or confusion. అతలకుతలముగా adv. In confusion. అల్లరిగా.

(p. 47) adhōmukhamu adhō-mukhamu. [Skt.] n. The face turned downwards: a downcast countenance. కిందికి వంచుకొని యుండే మొగము. అధోముఖముగా adv. With the face turned downwards, with a downcast countenance; headlong. తలవంచుకొని, తలక్రిందుగా. దివిటీని అధో ముఖముగా పట్టినాడు he held the torch with the flame downwards. అధోముఖుడు [Skt.] n. He who is downcast. ashamed or crest fallen. అతడు అధోముఖుడై ఉండెను he hung his head.

(p. 88) alavi alavi. [Tel.] n. Possibility, practicability, power, ability. శక్యము, కొలది అది చెప్పనలవికానిది it is indescribable. అలవు alavu. [Tel.] n. Power, ability. శక్తి, పరాక్రమము, బలిమి. 'తలకడచినడచిద్రోణుని యలవుబలంబును సహింపక.' M. VI. ii. 354. Difficulty. కష్టము, శ్రమము.

(p. 93) avatala, avala or ఆవల avatala. [Tel. అవల+తల = ఆవలిచోటు] adv. Afterwards, beyond, on the other side, further. తరువాత, అతట్టు, ఆపైన. 'ఆవల నా పొట్టునూరు రవులు కొనియె.' A. i. pref. 43. అవతలి or ఆవలి adj. Next, following. తరువాతి. అవతలి సోమవారము Monday after next. అవతలి వైనములు further particulars. అవతలివారు those who are on the other side. అవతలి తట్టు on the other side. అవతలిగతి యేమి? What happened afterwards? అవతలకు adv. Further off, to the other side. ఆతట్టుకు.

(p. 181) ekku ekku. [Tel.] v. a. & n. To rise, increase, swell. To appear (by its effects as wine, water, poison, or medicine.) To affect the mind. To prevail as a report; to come to notice వాని తలకు మదము ఎక్కినది he is beside himself with pride or lust. వానికి మత్తెక్కినది he is intoxicated. వడ్డియెక్కినది interest has accrued. ఎక్కినవడ్డి the interest that accrued. వాని దుష్టగుణములు నీకు ఎక్కినవి you have caught his bad habits, or, followed his example. వార్తకెక్కు to become the theme or topic of discourse. వన్నెకెక్కినాడు he became celebrated, rose to distinction. వాసికెక్కిన celebrated, honoured. ఎన్నికకెక్కినాడు one who has risen to reputation. పది గంటలపొద్దు ఎక్కిన వేళ when it was ten o'clock, lit. when the sun has mounted (to) ten hours. ఆ పనికి ఎవరును ఎక్కలేదు no one came forward, or volunteered for the business. అతని మాట యెక్కదు his word will not do, or avail. తలకు నీళ్లెక్కి ౛లుబుగానున్నది the water has got into the head and I have a cold. To mount on, get upon. మంచమెక్కు to take to one's bed. ఎక్కుకొను ekku-konu. v. a. To mount on ఆరోహించు.

(p. 209) oḍḍagillu or ఒడ్డగిల్లు oḍḍagilu. [Tel.] v. i. To incline, lean on one side. ఒరుగు. To increase, to flow in excess అతిశయించు, ఉప్పొంగు. ఒడ్డగెడవు oḍḍa-geḍavu. v. i. To turn upside down. 'గీ కెడసెహయము లొడ్డ గెడవయ్యెరథములు.' M. VI. ii. 178. తలక్రిందైయుండు.

(p. 244) kappa kappa. [Tel.] n. A frog. ఉరుకుకప్ప or చిరికప్ప a chunam frog or flying frog. బోదురుకప్ప the bull frog. తలకప్ప a tadpole. బాపనకప్ప a frog that in croaking produces a sound like పప్పు పప్పు. కంసాలికప్ప one that produces a sound like tick, tuck. చాకలికప్ప one that produces a sound like ugm, ugm. రాచకప్ప and గోదురుకప్ప are other species. Various species of fish are called కప్పలు. See Russell, plates 19 to 20. కప్పకురుపు kappa-kurupu. n. An abscess in the heel. కప్పచిప్ప kappa-chippa. n. A bivalve shell. నీటిగుల్ల.

(p. 263) kavyamu kavayamu. [Skt.] n. The oblation to the spirits (manes) of the deceased. పితృదేవతలకియ్యదగిన అన్నము.

(p. 273) kāya kāya. [Tel. from కాచు.] n. 1. A green unripe fruit. అరటికాయలు green plantains. 2. A nut, berry, pod, bulb, knob, head. 3. Anything round, as the head (తలకాయ) the bob of a plummet: a boss or round piece. 4. The word is used for a thing or article: as a piece at chess తుంటకాయ a wicked thing or creature. 5. A pimple: a wart. తవ్వడముచేత వాడిచేతులు కాయలుకాచినవి his hands are callous or hard with digging: he has a wart on his hand. 7. A bottle. రెండు కాయలను ఒకడే తీసుకొన్నాడు he alone drank two bottles. 8. As an affix it often leaves the sense unaltered: thus తల or తలకాయ the head. పిల్ల or పిల్లకాయ a child. గొంతు or గొంతుకాయ the throat. పుస్తె or పుస్తెకాయ a marriage token worn on the neck మొట్టు or మొట్టికాయ a blow or knock. ఎండ్రకాయ a crab. చెంపకాయ a slap on the cheek. Some fruits are called కాయ even though ripe, thus (from టెంకి shell) టెంకాయ a cocoanut. మిరపకాయ a chillie. ఉల్లికాయ an onion. కూరగాయలు or కాయగూరలు vegetables. కాయధాన్యములు kāya-dhānyamulu. n. Pulse: all sorts of grain contained in pods: as పెసలు, కందులు, సెనగలు, &c.

(p. 273) kāyamu kāyamu. [Skt.] n. The body. అతడు చచ్చినప్పటికిన్ని బహుధర్మాత్ముడని పేరుపడి యశఃకాయముతో యిప్పిటికిన్ని జీవించుచున్నాడు though he is dead, through his reputation for charity he still lives in his fame. కాయము [Tel.] n. A certain restorative medicine, administered to a woman in childbed. బాలెంతలకిచ్చే మందు. H. i. 114. కాయపుష్టి kāyapushṭi. n. Stoutness. కాయసిద్ధి corporeal perfection imagined to be attainable by religious austerities. కాయసిద్ధుడై ఉన్నాడు he bears a charmed life.

(p. 286) kīliñcu kīlinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To put on or in (flowers, shoes, &c. to another,) to deck with, insert, set. తగిలించు, కట్టు. తలకౌగిలించె మధ్యఘటమును she put the pail of toddy on her head. కీలితము kīlitamu. adj. Bound, tied, knotted.

(p. 293) kutalamu kutalamu. [Skt.] n. The earth, the world. అతలకుతలముగా topsy turvy: upside down.
