(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 2) aṅkamu ankamu. [Tel. Drav. word borrowed by Skt. √ అన్్క్ = to move in a curve.] n. A ma spot, badge. బిరుదాంకము = బిరుదు గురుతు. 'అంకపురాజింక.' వసు. ii. 11. The haunch or part above the hip. A chapter or section. An act in a play. Proximity. A numerical figure, a cipher. A military show, a sham fight. వింతపోరు, చిత్రయుద్ధము. 'అంకగతుడైన దైత్యుని నాగ్రహమున.' భాగ. A fault, a sin, Objection, cavil ఆక్షేపము. 'అంకముసేయవచ్చునలయయ్యలమున్నుగ బ్రస్తుతించెదన్.' మైరా. i. అంకతలము or అంకపీఠి the lap, the part on which an infant sits, as on the lap. 'నయనీయంకతలంబునన్నిదుర నూనంజేయగా వేడెదన్.' విక్ర iii. 94. అంకుడు n. He who is marked or distinguished గురుతుగలవాడు. మృగాంకుడు the moon.

(p. 4) aṅgada angada. [Tel.] n. Hunger. Misfortune, trouble, calamity. Mental agony or anxiety. Anger. 'అంగద లేక నిన్నహరహంబును నంకతలంబు చేర్చి.' రామా. v. 319.

(p. 1396) aṇṭunūne or అంటునూనియ anṭu-nūne. [Tel.] n. Oil used in bathing. తలంటుకొనుమంచినూనె.

(p. 9) anta anta. [Tel.] n. Whole; adj. So much. adv. Then, afterwards. నీ వెంత అడిగితే అంత యిస్తాను I will give you as much as you ask. అంతకంటె then that. అంతకంత as much again. అంతకంతకు by degrees; more and more. అంతకుముందు before that. అంతమంది so many men. అంత. మందిలో among so many persons. అంతమట్టుకు so far, thus far. అంతమాత్రము only so much అంతసేపు so long. అంతలో in the mean time. మూడంతలు three times as much. అక్కడికి పోయినంతలో on his going there. వాడు తనంతనే వచ్చినాడు he came of his own accord. అంతవాడు లేడు. there never was such a man. రాజంతవాడవు thou art equal to the king. నాయంతవాడు my equal, one like me one as tall as I am. అంతే అవును. that probably is the case నిద్రలేచినంతలో when he rose from sleep, as soon as he awoke. నేను తెలిసికొన్నంత as much as I know అంతపని such an act.

(p. 12) antalapontalavāḍu antalapontalavāḍu. [Tel.] n. A distant relation పరంపరాసం బంధి, దగ్గిరిచుట్టాలుకానివారు.

(p. 13) antika antika. [Skt.] n. A fire-place, hearth. పొయ్యి. 'చెరుకుముత్తియముల్ చిటిలించి తద్రసంబనిశము పండునంతికతలాంతికచూర్ణము చేయుబప్పురిజ్.' D. A. 1. 79.

(p. 16) amba amba [Skt.] n. Mother; a name of Durga. తల్లి, పార్వతి. అంబాత్రయము = జ్ఞానాంబ, భ్రమరాంబ, మాకాంబ.

(p. 17) ambika àmbika. [Skt.] n. A name of Parvati, wife of Siva. పార్వతి. Also, తల్లి, ధృతరాష్ట్రుని తల్లి.

(p. 1396) akṣantalu akshintalu. [from Skt. అక్షతలు.] n. A kind of thorny grass which sticks to one's clothes.

(p. 21) akṣatalu akshatalu. [Skt.] vulgarly అక్షింతలు n.plu. (lit. unbroken grains.) Grains of raw rice, made yellow with saffron. The red mark worn by some Hindus on the forehead formed of saffron and slaked lime. పసుపురాచిన బియ్యము, పేలాలు. నొసటను పెట్టుకోవడమునకై పసుపు సున్నము కలిపిన బొట్టు.

(p. 22) akhaṇḍamu a-khaṇḍamu. [Skt.] adj. Whole, entire; abounding; imperishable. సకలమైన, విస్తారమైన. అఖండానందము eternal bliss. అఖండైశ్వర్యము abounding wealth. అఖండకావేరి the main stream of the Cavery. అఖండము n. A permanent lamp in a temple. నిరంతరము మండే దీపము. అఖండిత adj. Unbroken, undivided. Untorn, undisturbed, uninterrupted, unrefuted, continous, imperishable. ఖండింపబడని, అనశ్వరమైన, అఖండతలక్ష్మి imperishable riches.

(p. 31) aṭṭa aṭṭa. [Tel.] n. The sole of a shoe or slipper; hide; leather. Card, pasteboard. A headless trunk. A part or division. చర్మము, మొండెము, భాగము. ఒంటట్ట చెప్పులు shoes with a single leather for a sole. చెమటట్ట a piece of leather put inside a shoe. అట్టపొట్టగా నుండేవాడు a stout pot-bellied man. అట్టలెత్తిన పాత్రమెట్టులు. A. vi. 103. 'అత్తెరంగునందు నిమియతం డయ్యట్టయుదలయును ధరణీతలగతంబుచేసె.' M. VII. v. 398. 'ఆ రాజులలో పరస్పర వైరంబు బుట్టించిన ఆ దండు రెండట్టలై.' G. vi. 92.

(p. 32) aṭṭu or అట్టుగా aṭṭu. [Tel.] adv. (A particle) So that, as, according to. అతడు వచ్చేటట్టు వ్రాయుము write a letter so that he may come. మీరు చెప్పినట్టుగా చేస్తిని I did as you bid me. ఆయన చెప్పినట్టు according to his order. వాడు ఇంకా అవతలకు పోవునట్టు అగుపడ్డాడు he seemed as though he would go further. నేను చెప్పినట్టు చేసినాడు he did as I said. వారు సాగిపోయినట్టుగా చెప్పెను he said that they had passed on. అట్టు గాక or అట్లాకాక aṭṭugāka. adv. Without being so. అట్టుల aṭṭula. adv. As soon as, soon after. వెంటనే. 'చెట్టు దిగి వచ్చినట్టుల.' H. ii. 47. Just as. ఆప్రకారము. అట్టే (for అట్లాగే) aṭṭē. [Tel.] adv. Thus. So. In the same manner, as it was. అట్టే ఉండనీ leave it as it is. నొప్పి అట్టే ఉన్నది the pain is in the same state. అట్టే పోయినాడు he went off straightway. అట్టే మాట్లాడుతూ ఉండినాడు he was talking straight on. ఆ గుర్రములట్టే ఉన్నవి the horses are as they were: they are untouched.
