(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 188) eddaḍi eddaḍi. [Tel.] n. Lack, want, scarcity లేమిడి. adj. Poor దరిద్రమైన. శూన్యమైన. ఎద్దడినేల a place where there is no water నిర్జలభూమి.

(p. 391) gōci gōchi. [Tel.] n. A clout. A truss or flap; a waist cloth. ఇనుపగోచి an iron buckle fabled to be worn by ascetics. వాడు ఇనుప గోచికట్టినాడు he took a vow of chastity. కోకగోచిపెట్టుకొను to draw the skirt of the petticoat between the thighs, and tuck it into the waist behind. గోచిదరిద్రము nakedness, utter poverty. గోచికాడై stripped naked. HD. ii. 1050. గోచికట్టు, గోచికాడు or గోచిబాపడు gōchi-kaṭṭu. n. A bachelor. బ్రహ్మచారి. HK. iv. 179.

(p. 582) daridramu daridramu. [Skt.] adj. Poor, needy. n. Poverty. పేదరికము. దరిద్రుడు daridrudu. n. A very poor man. మిక్కిలి బీదవాడు. దరిద్రురాలు a poor woman. దరిద్రులు the poor. గర్భదరిద్రుడు a wretched starveling.

(p. 766) puṭṭu puṭṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To be born, produced. To arise, come into existence, (as love, anger, &c.) జన్మించు. n. Birth, జన్మము. adj. Born. తల్లోతోడబుట్టినది a mother's sister. (పుట్టినది and పుట్టినవాడు are used where it is uncertain which member of a family is the elder, as the specific Telugu names for these relations denote the precedency or succession of birth.) తోడబుట్టినవాడు a brother. తోడబుట్టినది a sister. పుట్టుదరిద్రము life-long poverty. పుట్టుభోగి one who is rich from his birth. పుట్టుమచ్చ a birth-mark. పుట్టువ్యాధి a congenital disease, a disease born with one. పుట్టుక puṭṭuka. n. Birth, origin; source. జన్మము. పుట్టుకల్లరి puṭṭu-kallari. n. A born liar, పుట్టుక మొదలు అబద్ధములాడువాడు. పుట్టుగట్టు puṭṭu-gaṭṭu. n. The mountain out of which the sun is supposed to be born each morning, ఉదయాద్రి పుట్టుగొడ్డు or పుట్టుగొడ్రాలు one who is hopelessly barren. పుట్టుగ్రుడ్డి or పుట్టుచీకు puṭṭu-gruḍḍi. n. One who is born blind. పుట్టుచెయుయువులు puttu-cheyuvulu. n. Ceremonies connected with a birth. జాతకర్మము. పుట్టుపాప puttu-pāpa. n. An albino. పుట్టువు, ప ుట్టుగు or పుట్టుబడి puṭṭuvu. n. Birth, origin, production, పుట్టుక. తొంటిపుట్టువన్ in a former birth. పుట్టుమూగ puṭṭu-mūga. n. One who is born dumb. పుట్టువడుగు puṭṭu-vaḍugu. n. One who is a bachelor all his lifetime. పుట్టువెర్రి puṭṭu-verri. n. One who is insane from his birth. పుట్టించు puṭṭinṭsu. v. a. To create, generate, form, make, raise, fabricate. పుట్టింట puṭṭ-inṭa. (abl. of పుట్టిల్లు.) At home, in her parent's house. పుట్టినిల్లు, పుట్నిల్లు or పుట్టిల్లు puṭṭin-illu. n. Birth-place, home; mint, fountain-head. వాడు దుర్మార్గమునకు పుట్టిల్లు he is a mass of wickedness.

(p. 1109) lēvaḍi levaḍi. [Tel. from లే (q. v.)] n. Want, లేమి. Poverty, దారిద్య్రము. adj. Poor, దరిద్రము. Low, base, vile, mean. నీచమైన, అల్పమైన, 'యశమెంతేలేవడి.' A. iv. 285. టీ యశమెంతేలేవడి, కీర్తియెంతో నీచము, అనగా అల్పమైపోవునని భావము. 'కులములేవడియైన బుట్టలేదా విలువజెప్పగరానివజ్రంబులులతాంగి.' Garudāch. 66.

(p. 1139) valayu valayu. [Tel.] v. n. To be liked, desired or wanted. ఇష్టమగు, విహితమగు. To be needful, or necessary, ఆవశ్యకమగు. To be proper, యుక్తమగు. To be surrounded, వలయతమగు. 'మృగమువలయంబారెన్.' పంచ. నా. ii. 'స్వబుద్ధిరాజుకు విశేషింపవలయు' (P. i. 391.) the use of his own judgment is much needed in a king. 'కయ్యమునకు నెయ్యమునకు వియ్యమునకు సమతవలయు.' (ib. ii. 47.) in combat, in inter-marriage, and in friendship equality is wanted; or, there should be a similarity. 'ఔగాములరయవలయు.' (ib. iv. 431.) you should look to the chances of gain or loss, of success or failure. వలె, వలెను, వలసినది or వలయును are added as auxiliaries, to the Root in the Infinitive of any verb; to give the idea of obligation or necessity; నేను ఇమటికి పోవలెను I must go home. నీవు ఇక్కడికి రావలెను you must come here, you should come here, I hope you will come here. తమదయ రావలెను మా దరిద్రము తీరవలెను I hope your favour will come and that my poverty will be removed. ఆయన రేపో ఎల్లుండో రావలెను he must be here tomorrow or the next day, i.e., we expect him here tomorrow or the next day. వాడు దానితమ్ముడుగా ఉండవలెను I suppose he must be her brother. నాకు ఆ పుస్తకము కావలెను I want that book. వాణ్ని చంపియుండవలెను they must have killed him. నీకు అట్లురావలెను this serves you right. నీవు సందేహింపవలసినదిలేదు you need not doubt it, there is no occasion to doubt it. వాణ్ని పిలువవలెనని అక్కడికి వెళ్లితిని I went there to call him. ఈ పని చేయవలెనని పోవుచుండగా as I was going there to do this. జగడమాడవలెనని వస్తివా did you come on purpose (or wanting) to quarrel? వలసి (the past p|| of వలయు.) ఇవ్వవలసి యిస్తిని I paid it, because I had to. 'నిశాచరునుద్యోగంబుచూచుకొనవలసి.' Swa. iv. 163. అట్లు చేయవలసివచ్చును it will become necessary to do so. వలసిన (past part of వలయు) is used as an affix (similar to the Latin-ibilis or endus). చెల్లింపవలసిన సొమ్ము money due, the sum payable. 'వ;సినసంపదల్ గలుగవా.' T. ii. 34. టీ వలసిన, కావలసినటువంటి. వలసె or వలసెను (the past tense of వలయు) it became necessary, or requisite. వానితో చెప్పవలసె I was obliged to tell him.
