(p. 49) anada anada. [from Skt. అనాధ] n. She who is without a master or protector, without a husband. A rake or worthless fellow. అల్పుడు. adj. Destitute, wretched, abject, దిక్కులేనిది, మొగుడులేనిది.

(p. 51) anātha a-nātha. [Skt.] adj. Without a master or protector, forlorn, unprotected, without a husband. దక్షతలేని, దిక్కులేని, మొగుడులేని. అనాథ a-nādha. n. A destitute, a poor helpless wretch. నిరాదరువుగా నుండేవాడు, దిక్కుమాలినవాడు.

(p. 51) anāyakamu a-nāyakamu. [Skt.] adj. n. Being without a leader. Used for అరాజకము. Anarchy, misrule, confusion. అనాయకుడు n. He who is forlorn or helpless. దిక్కుమాలిన వాడు, నాధుడు లేనివాడు.

(p. 61) apadiśamu apa-diṣamu. [Skt.] n. A half point or quarter point or 'airt' of the compass; intermediate space. విదిక్కు, దిక్కోణము, దిక్కులనడిమి మూల, అయి మూల.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 109) āgu āgu. [Tel.] v. n. To stop, to stay, asbtain, refrain. To bear (as a cord does a weight.) To be confined, set aside, or reserved. ఆయింటను ఆగబడి యున్నదేవకి (B. X. 75.) Devaki who was kept in restraint. తల్లిదండ్రులులెని బాలురు ఆగ నీవు దిక్కు thou art the refuge of the helpless. పశువులకు ఆరినబీడు land set aside or reserved for pasture. ఇది లేనిది నాకు ఆగదు I cannot get on without this. నా నోటిలో ఆ మాట ఆగదు I cannot keep that word a secret. ఆగు, ఆగించు, ఆచు, ఆపు the causal of ఆగు: āgu. [Tel.] v. t. To stop, check, hinder. To keep, tend. To look to, superintend, guard, protect, preserve. To fold or gather as a flock. నోరాచి మాట్లాడిరి they spoke cautiously. చెయ్యి ఆపక (T. v. 22.) without intermission. నిద్ర ఆచుట to refrain from sleep, keep away drowsiness. రాత్రిళ్లు ఇక్కడ మందులు ఆచుకొని యుండేవారు they used to keep cattle here at nights.

(p. 127) āśa āṣa. [Skt.] n. Quarter, region, point of the heavens. దిక్కు.

(p. 156) udak udak. [Skt.] n. North. ఉత్తర దిక్కు adj. Northern. ఉత్తరపు.

(p. 197) eḍugaḍa or ఏడ్గడ ēḍugaḍa. [Tel. ఏడు+కడ (lit.) the place where your ఏడుపు complaint is listened to or కడ means end. So ఏడుకడ means the end of sorrow, that is, refuge.] n. Quarter, patronage, refuge. రక్షకము. Protector, patron. రక్షకుడు, దిక్కు. 'మన్మైప్రేరితకోటికేడుగడ.'

(p. 198) ēdu ēdu. [Tel.] v. n. To go, depart, cease, perish; be lost, leave, abandon. విడుచు, నశించు. దిక్కేదిన friendless, helpless. భయమేదిన fearless. చెలువేది having lost its bloom. సంశయమేది not entertaining a doubt. సందేహము మాని.

(p. 218) ōpu ōpu. [Tel.] v. t. To bear, endure, tolerate. ఓర్చు. చూపోపక A. v. 78. unable to stand before his face. ఇంతకష్టమోపలేను I cannot bear this trouble. ఓప రాని. ōpa-rāni. adj. Intolerable సహింపగూడని. ఓపలేని ōpa-lēni. adj. Impatient. ఓర్పులేని; helpless,దిక్కులేని. ఓపలేనివారికి వద్దన్నవారే తల్లిదండ్రులు those who check the impatient are their best friends. ఓపు ōpu. v. n. To be fit, to suit; to be worthy: to be able: to be possible or practicable. చాలు, తగియుండు, పోనోప్పనా can he go? పోనోపడు he cannot go. ఈనోపని unable to give.

(p. 223) kaṅgāḷī kangāḷī. [H.] adj. Wretched, miserable దిక్కుమాలిన, కంగాళీ మంచము a wretched bed. కంగాళీబత్తెము paltry batta, a wretched pittance.

(p. 228) kakup , కకుప్పు kakup. [Skt.] n. An airt or quarter of heaven. దిక్కు.

In the hands or possession of. అది నాకడనున్నది I have it by me. వాని పాదాలకడ పడినారు they fell down at his feet మావాండ్లకడ ఆ మర్యాద కద్దు it is the custom with us, or among us. ౛ాముపొద్దుకడ at sunset. పెందలకడ early. రేపకడ in the morning. కడకుపోవు or కడగాపోవు kaḍaku-pōvu. To be menstruous. కడకన్ను kaḍa-kannu. n. The corner of the eye. క్రేగన్ను, కటాక్షము. కడకంటచూచు kaḍakaṇṭa-ṭsūṭsu. v. n. To glance, view sidelong, to look askance. కడకొరివి kaḍa-koravi. n. A fire brand not quite burnt up కాలగా మిగిలిన కట్టె. కడగా kaḍa-gā. adv. Aside, away. కడలేని kaḍa-lēni. adj. Endless. కడవాడు kaḍa-vāḍu.n. A stranger అన్యుడు. The last male child కనిష్ఠుడు. కడసారి kada-sāri. adj & adv. Last, the last time.

(p. 258) kaliyu or కలియు kaliyu. [Tel.] v. n. To mix, join, mingle. To collect, assemble. To coalesce. To agree, correspond, match. To be included in, to fall under. To set to work, being to do. దిక్కులు కలియచూచి looking all round. దృష్టి కలిసినప్పుడు when our eyes met. అతనిభూమిలో కలిసినస్థలము a spot included in his land. ఆ దారి ఇక్కడ కలియుచున్నది that road meets here. సభ కలిపినది, or సభ కలిసిపోయినది the assembly has broken up or adjourned: కలియగలుపు kaliya-galupa n. Familiarity, affability. కలియగలుపుగానుండే familiar, easy, affable. కలియబడు kaliya-baḍu v. n. To meddle with. To rush, fall (upon enemies) వాండ్లు మామీద కలియబడ్డారు they rushed upon us. To become entangled. 'అరుతసరులుకలియంబడుచు.' B. viii. 457. కలియబెట్టు. kaliya-beṭṭu. v. a. To mix, to stir.
