(p. 49) anada anada. [from Skt. అనాధ] n. She who is without a master or protector, without a husband. A rake or worthless fellow. అల్పుడు. adj. Destitute, wretched, abject, దిక్కులేనిది, మొగుడులేనిది.

(p. 51) anātha a-nātha. [Skt.] adj. Without a master or protector, forlorn, unprotected, without a husband. దక్షతలేని, దిక్కులేని, మొగుడులేని. అనాథ a-nādha. n. A destitute, a poor helpless wretch. నిరాదరువుగా నుండేవాడు, దిక్కుమాలినవాడు.

(p. 51) anāyakamu a-nāyakamu. [Skt.] adj. n. Being without a leader. Used for అరాజకము. Anarchy, misrule, confusion. అనాయకుడు n. He who is forlorn or helpless. దిక్కుమాలిన వాడు, నాధుడు లేనివాడు.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 218) ōpu ōpu. [Tel.] v. t. To bear, endure, tolerate. ఓర్చు. చూపోపక A. v. 78. unable to stand before his face. ఇంతకష్టమోపలేను I cannot bear this trouble. ఓప రాని. ōpa-rāni. adj. Intolerable సహింపగూడని. ఓపలేని ōpa-lēni. adj. Impatient. ఓర్పులేని; helpless,దిక్కులేని. ఓపలేనివారికి వద్దన్నవారే తల్లిదండ్రులు those who check the impatient are their best friends. ఓపు ōpu. v. n. To be fit, to suit; to be worthy: to be able: to be possible or practicable. చాలు, తగియుండు, పోనోప్పనా can he go? పోనోపడు he cannot go. ఈనోపని unable to give.

(p. 223) kaṅgāḷī kangāḷī. [H.] adj. Wretched, miserable దిక్కుమాలిన, కంగాళీ మంచము a wretched bed. కంగాళీబత్తెము paltry batta, a wretched pittance.

(p. 258) kaliyu or కలియు kaliyu. [Tel.] v. n. To mix, join, mingle. To collect, assemble. To coalesce. To agree, correspond, match. To be included in, to fall under. To set to work, being to do. దిక్కులు కలియచూచి looking all round. దృష్టి కలిసినప్పుడు when our eyes met. అతనిభూమిలో కలిసినస్థలము a spot included in his land. ఆ దారి ఇక్కడ కలియుచున్నది that road meets here. సభ కలిపినది, or సభ కలిసిపోయినది the assembly has broken up or adjourned: కలియగలుపు kaliya-galupa n. Familiarity, affability. కలియగలుపుగానుండే familiar, easy, affable. కలియబడు kaliya-baḍu v. n. To meddle with. To rush, fall (upon enemies) వాండ్లు మామీద కలియబడ్డారు they rushed upon us. To become entangled. 'అరుతసరులుకలియంబడుచు.' B. viii. 457. కలియబెట్టు. kaliya-beṭṭu. v. a. To mix, to stir.

(p. 268) kācu kāṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To guard, keep, watch, tend, protect, take care of. To nourish. To spare, have mercy on, forgive, excuse. రక్షించు, కాపాడు. To keep off. అడచు. పశువులుకాచడము to tend cattle. పశువులుకాచేవాడు a cow herd. రాత్రి అంతా నిద్ర కాచినాడు he kept awake all night. నన్నుకాచేదిక్కులేదు. I have nobody who cares for me. నేను అట్లా చేసినట్టయితే నన్ను కాయబోకండి have no mercy on me if I have done so.

(p. 328) kōla kōla. [Tel.] adj. Long. కోలముఖము a long face. కోల మెరుగు forked lightning. నిలువుమెరుగు, ఐరావతి. 'శివుదిక్కునందు వేకువ గోలమెరులు మెరసె.' హరి. పూ. vii. కోలాకు a long leaf. కోలాకుపొన్న a certain tree. H. iv. 11. కోలతపేలా an oblong cup, a sauce boat.

(p. 384) geṇṭu genṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To move, shake, stir, go. చలించు, తొలగు. 'ధరణీమండలమమ్మహాంబునిధిమీదన్ నిల్పినల్ దిక్కులన్ ధరణీధ్రమ్ములు గెంటకుండనిడి.' V. P. i. 78. v. a. To thrust, push away, force, cause to totter. To toss aside. చలించు, తొలగు. n. Movement చలనము. గెంటుపడు genṭu-paḍu v. n. To miss. తప్పుట. గెంటని genṭani. adj. Immoveable, not to be shaken (as love), resistless, irrepressible, not to be turned away. స్థిరమైన, ఎడతెగని. 'అక్కలకంతితమ్మరసమంటగ గెంటనిప్రేమ వానినున్ జెక్కులముద్దు పెట్టుకొని.' T. ii. 96. గెంటించు genṭinṭsu. v. t. To push. To cause one to be pushed or sent away. యశోదశయ్య నొయ్యనచిన్ని నల్లనయ్యనునిచిచయ్యననయ్యవ్యకూతు నెత్తుకొని మరల నింటికింగెంటింపక వచ్చి.' B. X. iii. 45.

(p. 577) dakṣiṇamu dakshiṇamu. [Skt.] n. The right hand side (i.e., while facing the East.) The south, కుడిదిక్కు. See under పూర్వ. adj. Pertaining to the right hand, కుడి. Southern, కుడిదిక్కుది. దక్షిణకైలాసము the southern Kailasa-an epithet given to the town of Kalahasti. దక్షిణాగ్ని dakshiṇ-āgni. n. A name of the sacred fire that has to be kept up by a Brahmin householder. దక్షిణపురేడు Yama. దక్షిణా పథము the Deccan and South India together. దక్షిణుడు dakshiṇuḍu. n. A kind, honest or candid person. కుటిలముగాక చక్కనైనమనస్సుగలవాడు.

(p. 591) dikku dikku. [Skt.] n. A quarter, part, side, direction. దిశ. An airt or point of the compass. The ten directions named in Hindu books are the four points. N. E. S. W. and the intermediate four: N.-E. (ఈశాన్యమూల) S.-E. (ఆగ్నేయమూల) S.-W. (నైరృతిమూల,) N.-W. (వాయవ్యమూల) to which are added the Zenith and Nadir. దిక్కులుమ్రోయగా while the heavens resounded. Quarter, shelter, asylum, refuge, protection, patronage, శరణము. దిక్కులేని, దిక్కుమాలిన or దిక్కేదిన helpless, resourceless, devoid of any protector; also vile, abominable. దిక్కుగలచోటు a refuge. దిగ్విమల స్వరూపుడై the loveliest in the world. దిక్పతి or దిక్పాలుడు dik-pati. n. A demigod who rules one airt or point of the compass; the regent or genius that governs that quarter. ఈశానాదిదిక్పాలురు the genii of the north-east and other directions దిక్కమొగములు or దిక్కామొగములు dikka-mogamulu. [from దిక్కు+ముఖము.] n. Faces turned in every direction. People that flee in all directions through fear, భయముచేత దిక్కున కొక్కరుగా పోయినవారు. దిక్కా మొగముగా timidly, భీతిచే బెదరియుండినట్లుగా. దిక్కరి dik-kari. (దిక్+కరి.) n. One of the mythica, elephants that support the corners of the world. దిగంతము dig-antamu. (దిక్+అంతము.) n. An end of the earth. దిగంతఖ్యాతి world wide fame. దిగంబరుడు dig-ambaruḍu. (దిక్+అంబరుడు.) adj. Lit. 'Sky vested,' having the air as a robe. Naked, stark-naked, undraped. దిసమొలవాడు. n. An epithet of Siva. దిగంబరురాలు she who is naked. దిగ్గజము dig-gajamu. n. One of the eight elephants (గజ) the guard the cardinal points (దిక్కులు) of the world. A poetical phrase answering to the poles of heaven. దిగ్గజములుమ్రోయ making the welkin ring. కవిదిగ్గజము a leading or classical author. దిగ్బంధము dig-bandhamu. n. A magic rite, restraining by spells the influence of certain stars. cf. Job. XXXVIII. 31. దిగ్భ్రమము dig-bhramamu. n. Giddiness, stupor, amazement. దిక్కులతబ్బిబ్బు, భ్రమము. దిగ్బ్రమితాత్ముడై bewildered, horrified, amazed. దిగ్గిజయము dig-vijayamu. n. Dominion, empire. Universal conquest.
