(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 110) ajavañjavamu āja-vanjavamu. [Skt.] n. The world, earthly ties. A family. సంసారము. 'ఆజవంజవభ్రమాతీత మార్గుడై.' (Chenn. iv. 132.) He who is freed from earthly ties. అజవంజవమానమాలిన్యము worldy defilement.

(p. 54) anukūlamu anu-kūlamu. [Skt.] adj. Favourable, friendly, assisting, salubrious. హీతమైన, సహాయమైన, ఆరోగ్యమైన, శ్రేయస్కరమైన. అనుకూలమైన గాలి a favourable wind. వాని శరీరమునకు అనుకూలమైన స్థలము the place which agrees with him. అనుకూలమైనమాట a friendly word. అనుకూలశత్రువు a friendly enemy అనుకూల కాలము a suitable time. అనుకూలము or అనుకూలత n. Favour, goodness, kindness, aid. సహాయము, మేలు, దయ. దయ ద్రవ్యానుకూలము means, resource. దైవానుకూలము వల్ల by the grace of God. అనుకూలించు, అనుకూలపడు or అనుకూలమగు anukūlinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To be of use ఒదవు. To have effect, to have a good result. సఫలమగు, ఒనగూడు. అనుకూలము కాలేదు it failed, it had not the desired effect. నాకు ఇంకా రూకలు అనుకూల పడలేదు I have not yet obtained the money ఈ పని నీకు అనుకూలమగును you will succeed in this business. అనుకూలము చేయు or అనుకూలవరచు anukūlamuchēyu. v. a. To shew favour, to bring a thing about, to countenance. సహాయము చేయు, నెరవేర్చు. కార్యమును అనుకూలము చేసికొన్నారు they brought it about, brought it to a conclusion. అనుకూలుడు anukūluḍu. n. A friend, ally, patron. హితుడు, సహాయుడు, ఉపకారి. వాడు నాకు అనుకూలుడు he is well disposed towards me.

(p. 57) anulāpamu anu-lāpamu. [Skt.] n. Repetition. ఆడినమాటే అడడము, పునరుక్తి. అనులాపించు v. a. To repeat the same words. చెప్పిన మాటలనే మళ్లీ చెప్పుట.

(p. 67) abaddhamu a-baddhamu. [Skt.] adj. False, untrue, erroneous, wrong. అనృతమైన. నేను చెప్పినమాట అబద్ధము what I said was wrong, or not true. అబద్ధము n. A lie. A falsehood. అనృతము, తప్పు అబద్ధికుడు n. A liar. అమృతవాది.

(p. 95) avalambiñcu avalambinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To take hold of any thing; depend on any person or thing. చేపట్టు, ఆశ్రయించు, ఆ మతమును అవలంబించినవారు Converts, those who embraced that creed. ధైర్యము నవలంబంచి picking up courage. ఆయనమాట నవలంబించినారు they embraced his opinion, or sided with him. అవలంబము or అవలంబనము avalambamu n. Taking hold of anything, hanging on or from. Adoption, or profession of certain views. గతి, ఆశ్రయము, మతావలంబనము the adoption of a religion. అవలంబితము adj. That which is adopted, as one's own.

(p. 218) ōnamālu ōnamāla. [Tel.] n. The Alphabet, so named, because it commences with the salutation to God 'ōm Namah.'

(p. 242) kanna kanna. [Tel.] adj. (Contracted from కనిన who begot). 'By birth' (a parent) as distinguished from పెంపుడు 'by adoption.' కన్నతండ్రి one's own father or natural father; కన్నతల్లి one's own mother; కన్నబిడ్డ a child by birth, not by adoption. కన్న (i.e., కనిన seen, perceived.) adj. Any, miscellaneous, indiscriminately taken, vile. కన్నకూళ్లు any food that one could get. కన్నమాటలు vile language. కన్నవాడు anybody, without selection. కన్నవారు strangers, anybody. కన్నచోట anywhere. In Paraj. v. 46. కన్నదిగతిగా in any way or direction, headlong. కాకి కన్నది తింటుంది the crow eats trash.

(p. 253) karkaśamu karkaṣamu. [Skt.] adj. Violent, harsh, rough to the feel, rugged. Hard, cruel, unfeeling కనికరములేని, కరువైన, నొప్పించే. కర్కశమైనమాటలు harsh words. కర్కశము or కర్కస or కరకసా n. Roughness, want of smoothness: ruggedness. కరుకు. A feud, an old grudge, particularly between those who dispute about their respective boundaries. కర్కసపొలము debatable land, ground claimed by both parties.

(p. 271) kāpāḍu kāpāḍu. [Tel. from కాచు.] v. a. To guard, watch, keep, to preserve, or protect, patronise. To secure from failure. తనమాట కాపాడుకొనేటందుకు with a view to verify his statement.

(p. 351) gaṭṭi gaṭṭi. [Tel.] adj. Hard, firm, strong, substantial. Tight. Able, clever, expert. Brave, courageous, resolute, smart, fine. Loud. గట్టిచెర close imprisonment. గట్టిబొట్టు Full sunna, or the circle -- Appa C. ii. 27. గట్టిమోపుగానుండేదారి a very heavy road. గట్టించు gaṭṭinṭsu. v. a. To load a gun, to beat into a hard mass. గట్టనచేయు. గట్టిగా or ఘట్టిగా gaṭṭi-gā. adv. Well, strongly. Properly, tight, fast. Eminently, especially, seriously, greatly. Loudly, aloud. గట్టిగా రావలసినది you must positively come. గట్టిగా చదువు read aloud. ఇల్లు గట్టిగానున్నది the house is in good condition or is solid-built. గట్టిచేయు gaṭṭi-chēyu. v. a. To make firm. పాఠము గట్టిచేయు to get a lesson by heart. వాడు ఇస్తానన్నమాటను గట్టిచేయుము you should make him keep his promise. గట్టితనము gaṭṭi-tanamu. n. Cleverness, ability. గట్టినాణెము gaṭṭi-nāṇemu. n. Bullion. గట్టినబోది gaṭṭina-bōdi. n. A game played by boys. కాళ. iii. గట్టివ gaṭṭiva. [గట్టి+వాయి.] n. An isolent man. ధూర్తుడు. గట్టివాడు gaṭṭi-vāḍu. n. An able or skilful man. సమర్థుడు. గట్టివాయి gaṭṭi-vāyi. n. A brawling woman. గయ్యాళి, ధూర్తురాలు.

(p. 364) gāmu gāmu. [from Skt. గ్రహము.] n. A planet. A demon. గాముసోకినట్టు as though planetstruck, or possessed by a devil. Swa. iv. 126. 'గాముసోకినమాడ్కినికలువరించు.' Ila. ii. 26. గాములరేడు the sun, the lord of the planets.
