(p. 3) aṅkuramu ankuramu. [Skt.] n. A germ, a sprout, a bud. మొలక. నఖాంకురములు nail-marks, ప్రేమాంకురము the germ of love. నంశాంకురము నిలిచేలాగు దత్తుచేసికొనెను he adopted a son to preserve the stem of his family. ఆయనకు అంకురములేనందున as he left no heir.

(p. 3) aṅkuśamu ankuṣamu, [Skt.] n. An elephant goad, an elephant driver's hook. Also, a check, a bar, a poser, a ruling case or argument. అంకుశమున నిలిపినాడు he made them stop short. ఇది జ్వరాంకుశము this is a specific against fever, that which arrests the disease. కవిగజాంకుశము (title of a book) a code to guide the poets. అంకుశమునకురాని ungovernable, head-strong, untractable, indocile.

(p. 7) añcana or అంచనా anṭsana. [Tel.] n. An estimate, valuation, an appraisement. తుకము; చేసుకోయకమునుపు పంట ఆకళింపుచేయడము. అంచనాచూచు or వేయు to estimate crops, &c. అంచనాదారుడు an appraiser, an officer who estimates the quantity of corn in a field, or of the salt in a heap. నిలువు అంచనా, an estimate of the produce of a field before it is cut. కుప్ప అంచనా an estimate of the produce of a field after it is cut and heaped. అంచనా౛ాబితా an account of the estimated quantity of each ryot's produce.

(p. 8) aṇṭanillu antasillu [Tel.] v. i. To come near, to approach. చేరు. 'ఆరదంబులరదంబులతో నటసిలినడుచుచు.' ఉ.హరి. iv.

(p. 35) aḍāyiñcu aḍāyinṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To stop, seize, arrest. నిలుపు, పట్టుకొను.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu or అడ్డమైన aḍḍamu. [Tel.] adj. Cross. నన్ను అడ్డమైన మాటలు ఆడినాడు he reviled me. అడ్డమైనకూళ్లు any food that comes to the hand. నాకు అడ్డమైనపని పెట్టుతున్నాడు he employs me in anything that comes to hand. వాడు అడ్డదోవలు తొక్కుచున్నాడు he goes the wrong way to work. అడ్డకట్ట aḍḍa-kaṭṭa. [Tel.] n. A dam or bank, an embankment. సేతువు, చేలకు నీళ్లు నిలిచేటందుకు కట్టిన గట్టు. అడ్డకత్తి aḍḍakatti. A broad sword. పట్టిసము. అడ్డకమ్మి aḍḍa-kammi. A cross piece, the cross selvage in cloth. అడ్డకర్ర aḍḍa-karra. A cross-piece of timber: an obstacle: a bar. విఘూతము. నా పనికి అడ్డకర్రలు వేయుచున్నాడు he throws difficulties in my way. See అడ్డము. అడ్డగోడ addagōḍa a cross-wall. అడ్డచాపు aḍḍa-tṣāpu. A cross beam. అడ్డవాసము. అడ్డతల aḍḍa-tala. A narrow projecting head: having a narrow fore head. నిడుపు తల. అడ్డదూలము aḍḍa-dūlamu. A cross beam. అడ్డదోవ aḍḍa-dōva. A crossway. అడ్డపలక aḍḍa-palaka. A cross plank. అడ్డపట్టె. aḍḍa-paṭṭe. A thick board drawn by two oxen used for smoothing a ploughed field after the grain is sown. మడిసమముచేసే మాను. అడ్డుపడు aḍḍa-paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To interpose, to help; to obstruct, impede. విఘూతమగు, వారించు. నా పనికి అడ్డుపడ్డాడు he threw obstacles in my way. భార్యను కొట్టబోతే కొడుకు అడ్డుపడినాడు as he was going to strike his wife his son interposed. నేనడ్డపడకపోతే వాండ్లు వత్తురు had I not interposed they would have died. అడ్డపాటు aḍḍa-pāṭu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, obstruction. అడ్డి, విఘ్నము. అడ్డబాస aḍḍa-bāsa. n. A nose jewel. బులాకి. అడ్డబొట్టు aḍḍa-boṭṭu. A cross mark worn by the Hindus on their fore-head. అడ్డమాను aḍḍa-mānu. A cross bar. వాడు అడ్డవాట్లు వేస్తున్నాడు he throws impediments in the way.

(p. 43) adavaḍa adavada. [Tel.] n. Confusion, grief; affliction. కలత, దుఃఖము, వ్యాకులము. 'ఎందునున్నను తెత్తునియ్యిందువదన వదనవడు జూడుమద వదవదలియధిప. ' R. v. 276. అడవదవడు v. n. To be in grief, be sorrowful, be troubled. వందలమందు, విచారపడు, వ్యాకులపడు. 'పదపదరాఘవ నిలునిలు, మదవడపడవల దుదళరధాధిపనీకున్.' R. iv. 15.

(p. 52) anilamu anilamu. [Skt.] n. Wind, breeze. వాయువు, గాలి, అనిలప్రకృతి the nature of wind or air. అనిలుడు aniluḍu. [Skt.] n. The god of air. వాయుదేవుడు. అనిలులు anilulu. n. plu. Subordinate deities: forty-nine of these form one class, the Anilas or winds. ఏకోనపంచాశద్వాయు గణము, అష్టవసుభేదము.

(p. 73) abhyutthānamu abhy-uthhānamu. [Skt.] n. Rising, rising to welcome a person. లేవడము, ఎదురుకొనిలేచుట, లేచి మర్యాదచేయడము, గౌరవము.

(p. 76) ayi (past p|| of అగు to become.) Having become, turned into. మాకు అయి నిలిచినాడు he stood like a post., i.e., he has transfixed with surprise &c. దొంగ అయి తిరుగుతున్నాడు he has turned thief. పోకిరి అయిపోయినాడు he has become a wicked fellow. అయిన (past rel. p|| of అగు to become.) Accomplished, becoming, agreeable, suitable. అయినపని a work that is accomplished, a becoming art. అయిన పెండ్లాము a good wife. అయినమందు a suitable medicine. అయినమనిషి a useful or proper man. అయినవాండ్లు friends, relations. See కాని. అయిన is also used to change nouns into adjectives as సొగసైన పిల్ల, ఆశ్చర్యమైన కార్యము a wonderful deed. For other uses, see under ఐన.

(p. 80) arikaṭṭu arikaṭṭụ. [Tel.] v. a. To check, stop, hinder. అడ్డగించు. 'కొసరునగ నవ్వుకొన గోట కొప్పుదువ్వు నొంటినరికట్టినిలుమంచు నొట్టు బెట్టు.' T. ii. 98.

(p. 82) arumu or అరము arumu. [Tel.] v. a. To browbeat, to bully, to attack. గద్దించు, గదమాయించు, ఎదిరించు, ఆక్రమించు. 'కయ్యమెల్లను దనమీద బెట్టుకొని లావును బీరము జూపబూని యేపుననరిమెన్ భవద్విశిఖపుంజములన్ దెగటార్పుమీతనిన్.' M. VIII. i. 69. 'అరిమిర మాకు మారుడపుడగ్రతలంబున వచ్చి నిల్చి.' Vasu. iii. 240.

(p. 86) alanduru alanduru. [Tel.] n. Grief, sorrow, affliction. ఖేదము, దుఃఖము. 'కందర్పు నిదర్పంబున నలందురు పొందుదుననిననన్వెలంది వెండియు నిట్లనియె.' M. IV. ii. 72. 'మేరుకల్పులన్ గొడకులనేవురింజముడు గొన్ననలందురు జూడనేర్తునే.' M. XII. i. 210. అలందురు v. n. To grieve, to sorrow. దుఃఖపడు. 'నిలుకడయును, లేమితాల్మికొనగలేక యలందురితనువు నింద్రియములు మనము ధృతయు, తన వశంబు గాక తల్లడపడి.' M. IV. ii. 318.
