(p. 625) naṅga or నంగనాచి nanga [Tel.] n. A weevil, or canker worm, a book worm, a round white worm, (also called వడ్లచిలుక and ముడికొక్కు.) which looks harmless but is destructive. Hence, a demure minx, a sly jade, a specious hypocrite. Sometimes used for a mosquito or gnat because it looks harmless దిట్టతనము కలిగియు బయటికి ఏమియు తెలియని దానివలె నుండునది. Swa. iii. 43. నంగనాచితనము nanga-nāchi-tanamu. n. Feigned simplicity. నంగిమాట nangi-māḷa. n. A nasal sound: a word pronounced through the nose. ముక్కుతో మాట్లాడినమాట. A snuffle, or twang. నంగు nangu. v. n. To speak through the nose: to speak with through the nose: to speak with a twang or snuffle. ముక్కుతో మాట్లాడు.

(p. 745) pāla pāla. [Tel. from పాలు milk.] n. The bird called the Indian Roller, boracias indica (F.B.I.) the flight of which is consulted as an omen. It is erroneously called a blue jay. Various varieties are called గొర్రెపాలపిట్ట and మేకపాలపిట్ట. See Jerdon No. 243. A treatise on Omens says. 'పాలగరుడతప్ప పక్షిజాతులకెల్ల నెడమమండికుడికి నెగయవలయు.' పాల or పాలతీగ n. A certain tree, ఇక్షుగంధ, క్షీరికావృక్షము; of which there are various species as, అడవిపాలతీగ Nerium reticulatum, కాకిపాలతీగ Asclepias asthmatica, దూదిపాలతీగ Asclepias volubilis, మట్టపాలతీగ Convolvulus paniculatus; చిరుపాల, అనగా ఉటని. Q. మన్నుపాల, అనగా ఉత్పల కృష్ణ. Q. పాలపండు, అనగా కనిష్ట. Q. Various species of the 'milk plant' are called మేకపాలతీగ, కుక్కపాలతీగ, &c. పాల adj. White. పాలవెండి pure silver. పాలకన్ను pāla-kannu. n. S. i. 202. పాలటేకు or పాలతేకు pāla-ṭēku. n. The white wooded teak tree. పాలడ pālaḍa. (పాలు+అడుగు.) n. A shell used as a spoon or ladle in giving milk to a child. పాలతుత్తము or పాలతుత్తరము pāta-tuttamu. n. White vitriol. పాలపండ్లు pāla-panḍlu. n. Milk teeth. To caress, పక్కలపైనబడు. 'అయ్యయయ్యయటంచు నెయ్యంబుమీరగా పలుమారు పైబక్కబడకయుంట.' N. ix. 103. పైపడు or పైబడు pai-paḍu. v. n. To fall upon, attack, పైకొను, కవియు. To exceed మీరు ఆ గుర్రమునకు అందరును పైబడుచున్నారు all of them are contending for the horse. M. x. i. 145. పైపాటు pai-pāṭu. n. An attack or encounter, కవియుట. పైపైగా pai-pai-gā. adv. Easily, superficially, cursorily, సులభముగా. పైయెద్దు or పైవన్నెయెద్దు pai-y-eddu. n. An ox with the belly alone white, called a sheeted ox. పైవిలాసము pai-vilāsamu. n. (p. 921) bhāramu bhāramu. [Skt.] n. Weight, heaviness, a burden. బరువు. Responsibility, incumbent or bounden duty. Hardship. A certain weight. బారువ. 'కావున నాకుండలములు గైకొనుమివి. సంభావనముతో నిత్యము మహావరసౌవర్ణ భారమిచ్చుచునుండున్.' G. vii. 142. నాకు ఒళ్లు భారముగానున్నది I am unwell. నావంటి దీనులరక్షించే భారము తమదే it rests with you to relieve poor men like me. దూరభారములో నున్నాడు he is afar off. భారకము bhārakamu. n. A crisis. ముమ్మరము. జ్వరము నిండా భారకముగానున్నది the fever is at its height or crisis. భారకర్త bāra-karta. n. One who sustains or is responsible. Thus, దేవుడు మా భారకర్త God is our refuge. భారకించు bhāra-kinṭsu. v. n. To become severe, as fever. నాకు ఒళ్లు భారకించేలాగుననున్నది I have a prospect of illness. భారవాహుడు or భారకుడు one who carries a burden, బరువు మోయువాడు, భారీ bhārī. adj. Big, high, stout, bulky. Rich. respectable.

(p. 945) maḍḍu maḍḍu. [Tel.] n. An iron ball, ఇనుపగుండు. 'ఉ ఎర్రగా. గాగినమడ్డు చందమోసగంగను పట్టె నినుండునుష్ణతన్.' Prabhavati. v. 62.] Great heat, అత్యుష్ణము. వాని కడుపులో మడ్డు పోసినట్టు ఉన్నది he is in bitter grief. adj. Red hot. మడ్డుకత్తి maḍḍu-katti. n. A bill hook, మచ్చుకత్తి.

(p. 1101) lāghavamu lāghavamu. [Skt. from లఘువు.] n. Lightness, slightness, delicacy, easiness, facility, dexterity. లఘుత్వము. Health, ఆరోగ్యము. హస్తలాఘవము or కరలాఘవము sleight of hand. నన్నులాఘవముచేసిరి or లాఘవపరిచిరి they scorned me. చూచువారికి లాఘవముగానుండును it will appear contemptible. (p. 1168) vijayamu vi-jayamu. [Skt.] n. A great conquest, a complete triumph, a great victory. మిక్కిలి గెలుపు. This word is used in the titles of several poems, and can be translated 'Adventures' or 'Tale,' as తారాశశాంకవిజయము the adventures of Tāra and Sasanka, similar to those of Stella and the Genius. విజయ vi-jaya. n. The name of a Telugu year. విజయదశమి vijaya-daṣami. n. The tenth day of the month Asvayuja, being the day after the festival to Sarasvati, when all books, arms and instruments of trade are worshipped. విజయముచేయు or విజయంజేయు vi-jayamu-chēyu. v. n. To come, వచ్చు. To proceed; deign or condescend to come or go. వేంచేయు, విచ్చేయు, వచ్చు, పోవు. ఈవేళ మాయింటికి విజయము చేస్తారా will you do me the honor to come to my house? will you favour me with your company. 'దేవదేవుండువిజయంబు చేసిన యీస్వప్నంబు.' A. pref. 21. 'విద్విషత్సంహారంబునకు విజయంబు చేయుమనుటయు.' lb. iv. 111. విజయస్తంభము vijaya-stambhimu. n. A pillar of victory. జయించి నాటినస్తంభము. Jaya and Vijaya are the names of the two porters at the gate of the palace of Vishnu, విష్నువుయొక్క ద్వారపాలకులు.

(p. 1169) viṭatāṭamu , విటతటము, విటతాటనము or విటతాటము viṭa-tāṭamu. [Tel.] n. Confusion, disorder. తారుమారు. adj. Confused, disorderly, తారుమారు viṭa-tāṭamu-gā. adj. Topsy-turvy. తారుమారుగా, ఈవలిదావలనావలిదీవలనుండునట్లు. 'వెసజైనప్రతిమలవిటతాటమాడి, వసతులన్నియువ్రచ్చివైపించెగాదె.' BD. vi. 202. (p. 1236) vyāsamu vyāsamu. [Skt.] n. Expansion, diffusion, విరివి. A dissertation, an essay. ఏ విషయమునైనను విరివిగా వ్రాయుట. వ్యాసుడు vyāsuḍu. n. Vyāsa, the sage who is said to have written the Mahā Bhārata. పరాశరునికొడుకు వ్యాసఘట్టము vyāsa-ghaṭṭamu. n. Any difficult passage in the Mahā Bhārata; a puzzle or stumbling block; an inextricable difficulty. భారతములో అతికఠినముగా నుండేపట్టు, అసాధ్యముగా నుండునది.

(p. 1301) samādhi samādhi. [Skt.] n. A grave, or tomb. శవమునుపాతి పైనికట్టినది. గోరీ. Deep meditation on the Deity, devout abstraction, absorption of thought. దేవునియందు తదేకధ్యానముగానుండడము. సమాధిస్థానము a place where a recluse sits when praying or meditating. దేవధ్యానము మీదనుండునప్పుడు కూర్చుండేచోటు. వారు జలసమాధిని పొందిరి they found a watery grave.
