(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 32) aṭṭahāsamu aṭṭa-hāsamu. [Skt.] n. Violent, phrenzied laughter. Vehement action, exceeding effort or exertion. Toil, pains, laborious efforts. Pomp. 'అట్టహాసంబున నడరెడు తెరనూరు.' N. ix. 31. నా కూతురిని పంపితేనేగాని కూడదని అట్టహాసము చేస్తాడు he protests violently that his daughter shall go with him. రాజు బహు అట్టహాసముతో బయలుదేరినాడు the king set out with great pomp. అట్టహాసకాడు n. A pompous or ostentatious man.

(p. 44) adda adda. [from Skt. అర్థ] adj. Half. సగము. అద్దగోడ. a wall that serves as a screen. అర్థరూపాయి a half rupee. అద్దమణుగు a half maund. అద్దపావులా a two anna piece. అద్దమరేయి addama-rēyi. n. Midnight. అర్ధరాత్రము, నిశీధి 'అద్ద మరేయద్దాసరి.' A. vi. 10. In revenue phrase, అద్ద means an incomplete heap. Also, a stamp or seal. వట్టిముద్ర. అద్దలవాడు he who stamps or marks the salt heaps. A marker or stamper. Also, a salt manufacturer. ముద్ర మనిషి, ఉప్పు చేసేవాడు. అద్ద n. A dry measure, half of a 'sola.' A small heap of straw not yet thrashed. అర్థసోల, నూర్చకుండా వేసిన చిన్న కుప్ప.

(p. 58) anūruḍu an-ūruḍu. [Skt.] n. The charioteer of the sun. సూర్యసారధి, అరుణుడు.

(p. 58) anūrjitamu an-ūrgitamu. [Skt.] adj. Not strong. Not permanent. అస్థిరమైన.

A. i. pref. 43. అవతలి or ఆవలి adj. (p. 173) ussu ussu. [Tel.] n. Ah! alas! 'ఉస్సను నూర్చుహాయనున్.' P. i. 246. ఉస్సని కూర్చున్నాడు he sighed and sat down. ఉస్సురను ussur-anu. v. n. To sigh. (from ఉస్సు alas! and అను to say; the R being inserted to save elision.) మిక్కిలి విసుకు. ఉస్సురనిపించు ussur-anipinṭsu. (causal of ఉస్సురను.) v. a. To grieve, to make one sigh.

(p. 173) uhhu uhhu. [Tel.] n. The sound produced when a fire is kindled by blowing on it. నిప్పూదుట యందు కలుగుధ్వని. 'ఉహ్హని హోమాగ్నినూద నొల్లడు గాని విరహజ్వరార్తితో వెచ్చనూర్చు.' పాండు. iii.

(p. 182) ekkuva ekkuva. [Tel.] n. Excess, greatness, eminence. Particularity, peculairity. ఆధిక్యము, విశేషము. అతని దగ్గిర పుస్తకాలు ఎక్కువగా లేవు he has not many books. ఎక్కువ ekkuva. adj. Great, peculiar, remarkable, singular. అధికము. ఎక్కువ పాతదికాదు it is not very old. ఎక్కువళ్రమకాదు it is no great trouble. ఎక్కువతక్కువ ekkuva-takkuva. n. More or less, uneveness, irregularity, ups and downs. కొంచెము ఎక్కువతక్కువగా నూరు రూపాయలు about 100 Rupees. మాలో నేదైనా యెక్కువ తక్కువ ఉంటే తమరు క్షమించవలెను please to excuse all errors.

(p. 184) eḍa eḍa. [Tel.] n. Place, space, చోటు; Interval, medium distance. చోటు, అవకాశము, దూరము. An interval of time గడువు. Breach or obstacle విఘ్నము. Business వ్యవహారము. BD. iii. 737. ఎడలేకున్న continuous, without interval or break. ఎడను or ఎడల regarding, concerning, of, about. నాయెడ towards me. గురునియెడ towards the teacher. ఇడినయెడ on giving, కానియెడ if it is not so. మియడవాయెడ towards you and me. ఇట్లప్పురంబు చేరునెడ on arrival at the town. ఎడగాపెట్టు to set aside, reserve. ఎడకట్టు eḍa-kaṭṭu. v. n. To find a place for itself. To gather or form as a boil ఆరినపుండు మరల చీముపట్టు, చేర్చు. ఎడకత్తె eḍa-katte. n. A bawd. ఎడకాడు eḍa-kāḍu n. A go-between, a pimp. ఎడకారు eḍa-kāru. n. An untimely crop, a crop produced out of season' before the rains. వ్యత్యయకృషి. ఎడకారుగా పుట్టిన forced, grown out of season, succedaneous.
