(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 109) āgu āgu. [Tel.] v. n. To stop, to stay, asbtain, refrain. To bear (as a cord does a weight.) To be confined, set aside, or reserved. ఆయింటను ఆగబడి యున్నదేవకి (B. X. 75.) Devaki who was kept in restraint. తల్లిదండ్రులులెని బాలురు ఆగ నీవు దిక్కు thou art the refuge of the helpless. పశువులకు ఆరినబీడు land set aside or reserved for pasture. ఇది లేనిది నాకు ఆగదు I cannot get on without this. నా నోటిలో ఆ మాట ఆగదు I cannot keep that word a secret. ఆగు, ఆగించు, ఆచు, ఆపు the causal of ఆగు: āgu. [Tel.] v. t. To stop, check, hinder. To keep, tend. To look to, superintend, guard, protect, preserve. To fold or gather as a flock. నోరాచి మాట్లాడిరి they spoke cautiously. చెయ్యి ఆపక (T. v. 22.) without intermission. నిద్ర ఆచుట to refrain from sleep, keep away drowsiness. రాత్రిళ్లు ఇక్కడ మందులు ఆచుకొని యుండేవారు they used to keep cattle here at nights.

(p. 112) āḍu āḍu. [Tel.] v. n. 1. To play, dance, work, act, do, move, ply. కాళ్లు ఆడకనిలిచె he stood stock-still, his feet did not stir. 2. To shake, totter, wag. 3. To beat, as the pulse. ధాతువు ఆడుచున్నది the pulse beats. 4. To speak, say. ఇట్లు కొందరు ఆడగా while some spoke thus. ఆడినది ఒకటి చేసినది ఒకటి he said one thing and did another. పోనాడు to cry Avaunt.! మున్నాడు to advance or come forward. ఆ పేరు నోట్లో ఆడుచున్నది I have the name at the tip of my tongue.

(p. 151) uṭravaḍiyamu uṭra-vaḍiyamu. [Tel.] n. A rich dish, a kind of pilao of rice and spices. వాని సొమ్ము ఉట్రవడియముగా నోట్లోవేసికొన్నాడు he took that man's property as quietly as he would have eaten his dinner.

(p. 174) ūḍu ūḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To part, drop out, slip out, జారు, రాలు. To give way, fail: to be unfastened, loosened, separated. వదులగు. To flee, run away. పారిపోవు. తండ్రి నోట్లో ఊడిపడ్డాడు he is the very image of his father. ఊడగొట్టు to take out, root up. remove. ఊడదీయు to pull out, to take off (skin or clothes), to unloose. ఊడబీకు to root out. ఊడలాగు to pull out, to draw out.

(p. 217) ōṭa ōṭa. [Tel.] n. Fear, వెరపు. Hesitation సంకోచము. ఓటమి or ఓటము ōṭami. n. Fear భయము. Failure, loss, defeat, భంగము, అపజయము. గెల్పోటములు gain and loss. 'భూమీభృత్సభనోటమైన నయశంబుల్ మీకు రాకుండునే.' A. i. 95.

(p. 217) ōṭu ōṭu. [Tel.] adv. Surely; perhaps. 'భోజనవేళనీగ కా లూనిన, వంటకంబు తినకుండగ నేర్పగునోటు భాస్కరా.' భాస్కరశతకము.

(p. 1399) kannōṭu kann-ōṭu. [Tel. కన్ను+ఓటు.] n. Fear. భయము, బెదరు.

(p. 249) karakkāya karakkāya. [Tel.] n. The fruit of the కరక (q. v.) వాని నోట్లో కరక్కాయపడ్డది he is ruined: వానినోట కరక్కాయ కొట్టినాను I have ruined him.

(p. 317) koṭṭu koṭṭu. [Tel.] v. a. To strike, knock. smite, beat, thrash. To attack (as rats do.) To rob, as highwaymen do. To quash, refute, defeat, dismiss, nonsuit. To strike off (the head) or behead. To strike out or rescind (a word). దారులు కొట్టు to rob (on) the high road. గోడను కాగితముకొట్టు to put (or stick) a paper on the wall. చప్పట్లుకొట్టు to clap the hands. అచ్చుకొట్టు to print. కొర్రుకొట్టు to impale. ఈతకొట్టు to swim. నన్నుముకొట్టు to whitewash. నన్ను దొంగలుకొట్టినారు thieves robbed me. చెంపకొట్టు to give a slap on the cheek. బుడ్డికొట్టు to crack a bottle, i.e, drink liquor. తలకొట్టు to behead, to ruin. పిండికొట్టు to pound flour. డేరాకొట్టు to pitch a tent. ఊడగొట్టు to loosen. చెడగొట్టు to spoil or ruin. తేలగొట్టు to set afloat. దిగగొట్టు to drive in. నలియగొట్టు to bruise. పండ్లు రాలగొట్టు to knock out a man's teeth. పగలగొట్టు a break to pieces. పడగొట్టు to throw down. పోగొట్టు to lose. విరుగగొట్టు to break; సాగగొట్టు to beat out (metal). ఊకొట్టు to hum in assent while listening. బుసకొట్టు to hiss. వాడు చేసిన దౌర్జన్యము వాణ్ని కొట్టినది his wickedness has fallen on his own head. నా నోట్లో మన్ను కొట్టినారు they have cast earth into my mouth, i.e., cheated or ruined me. కొట్టించు koṭṭinṭsu. v. t. To cause to beat.

(p. 323) koladi or కొద్ది koladi. [Tel.] n. Extent, measure, height, depth, limit. పరిమితి. Means, mode. Power, glory. శక్యము. 'తలపుకొలది బడదు దైవికమేకాని' (Vēma) not according to our will but as god wills. నీకొలదియెరుంగక in ignorance of thy power. ఏకొలదినైనా by all means. ఆయన చిత్తము కొలదియెరింగి in conformity with his pleasure. L. XVII. 136. 'నోటికొలందుల మాట్లాడి.' L. VII. 481. saying anything that came into his mouth. As an affix, కొలది or కొద్ది. (p. 443) cali ṭsali. [Tel.] n. Cold, coolness, a chill. శీతము, శీతబాధ. చలిజ్వరము cold and fever, i.e., ague. నాకు చలిపెట్టినది I felt cold. చలి. adj. Cold, cool. చలికూడు cold food, breakfast. చలియిసుక camphor. Vasu. ii. 36. చలిగురువు ṭsali-garuvu. n. A soil composed of marl or sand covering black earth. మీద ఇసుకగలరాతిపారునేల. చలికొండ ṭsali-konḍa. n. The Himalaya mountains. చలిచీమ ṭsali-chīma. n. A black ant. చలిది, చచద్ది or చల్ది ṭsalidi. n. Breakfast. Lit: cold food left over from supper. చలిపందిలి ṭsali-pandili. n. A place where passers-by are supplied with water to drink. చలిపండ్లు ṭsali-panḍlu. n. The teeth being set on edge. (A. iv. 151. on which the note says 'జువ్వున పులుసు తిన్నందువల్ల తీసుక పొయ్యేనోటిపండ్లు.') చలిపని a cooling operation, శైత్యోపచారము. చలిబిండి ṭsali-binḍi. n. The name of a certain plant. చలిమల ṭsali-mala. n. The hill of snow, i.e., హిమాచలము. చలిమిడి ṭsalimiḍi. n. A mixture of rice flour and sugar బెల్లము కలిపిన పిండి. చలిమిరి or చల్మిరి ṭsali-miri. n. I cannot pronounce that word. కావలితిరుగు to stand sentry. తిరగదీయు to tamper with or corrupt a witness తమ మాటకు తిరుగులేదు you are supreme: your word is law. హుండి తిరిగిపోయినది the bill was dishonoured. చుక్కలు తిరిగినది the stars have turned, i.e., it is past midnight. తిరుగాణి (తిరుగు+ఆణి.) a screw. సందుల తిరిగిరి they went round by the alleys. తిరుగు v. a. To go round, encircle. సరివేష్టించు. తిరుగు or తిరుగుడు tirugu. n. A turning, a turning back, తిరుగుట, భ్రమణము. A change మారుపాటు. A screw, a rivet, a carpenter's vice. మర. A bend or turn (as in a road.) The point on which an affair turns. తిరుగుడుబండి a return cart. లెక్కలో తిరుగుడు వచ్చినది or తిరుగుళ్లుపడినవి there is a difficulty, a question, a point to be cleared. తిరుగుడుచీల or తిరుగుడునొక్కు a screw, మర. తిరుగుడు పువ్వు tiruguḍu-puvvu. n. The turning flower, i.e., the sun flower. A sort of gold jewel worn by women. తిరుగుడుత్రాడు a noose, ఉరి, ఉచ్చు. తిరుగుదల tirugudala. n. A turn. మరలుట. వ్యాధి తిరుగుదలగా నున్నది the disease is on the turn. తిరుగుడుపడు to turn, to be giddy పరిభ్రమించు. తిరుగుడుపాటు tiruguḍu-pāṭu. n. Rebellion, resistance. తిరుగబడు or తిరగబడు tiruga-baḍu. v. t. To turn against, to rebel against, to oppose, to attack angrily. తిరగబాటు or తిరుగబాటు tiraga-bāṭu. n. Disobedience, rebellion, turning against. తిరగబోయు or తిరుగబోయు tiraga-bōyu. v. a. To spice, or season (a curry.) తిరగబోత or తిరుగబోత tiraga. n. Seasoning, putting spice, &c., to food. తిరగవేయు or తిరుగవేయు tiraga-vēyu v. a. To turn a thing over. తిరుగ or తిరుగా tiruga. adv. Again. తిరుగడ tirugaḍa. (తిరుగు+గడ.) n. (p. 540) turumu turumu. [Tel.] n. Powder. పొడుము. Braided hair or tresses. కొప్పు. v. a. To cram, or stick: to thrust in. To adjust, trim, deck the head with flowers. కొప్పుగాముడుచు, కొప్పునదోపు. To grate, pound, reduce to powder or to chips పొడిచేయు. వాని నోట్లో గుడ్డతురిమి కొట్టినారు they thrust a handkerchief into his mouth to beat him. తురుముపీట turumu-pīṭa. n. A crooked knife with teeth at the end used to scoop out a cocoanut, &c. తురుముట కనువుగా చివరను పండ్లేర్పరచిన వంకర యినుప కమ్మిచెక్కిన పీట.
