(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. (p. 745) pāla pāla. [Tel. from పాలు milk.] n. The bird called the Indian Roller, boracias indica (F.B.I.) the flight of which is consulted as an omen. It is erroneously called a blue jay. Various varieties are called గొర్రెపాలపిట్ట and మేకపాలపిట్ట. See Jerdon No. 243. A treatise on Omens says. 'పాలగరుడతప్ప పక్షిజాతులకెల్ల నెడమమండికుడికి నెగయవలయు.' పాల or పాలతీగ n. A certain tree, ఇక్షుగంధ, క్షీరికావృక్షము; of which there are various species as, అడవిపాలతీగ Nerium reticulatum, కాకిపాలతీగ Asclepias asthmatica, దూదిపాలతీగ Asclepias volubilis, మట్టపాలతీగ Convolvulus paniculatus; చిరుపాల, అనగా ఉటని. (టెంకాయనీళ్లు is the water in the cocoanut.) మర్రిపాలు the milky juice of the banyan tree. పాలవంటివారు, పాల వంటి కులము men (or a tribe) like milk, i.e., candid, simple, pure, unspotted, blameless, honourable. పాలవంటి మనసు a pure mind, a simple heart. పాలుకారేముఖము a milk-distilling face, i.e., a face radiant with loveliness. పాల్గారుచెక్కుటద్దములు radiantly polished cheeks, beaming with beauty. పాలకడలి, పాల్కడలి, పాలకుప్ప, పాలమున్నీరు, పాలవాగు or పాలవెల్లి pāla-kaḍali n.
