(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

To get through, finish: to make clear or evident; to decree, decide. చక్కబెట్టు. పరిష్కారము or పరిష్కరింపు parish-kāramu. n. A decision, finishing, settlement, adjustment, arrangement. చక్కబెట్టుట. (p. 816) pōgu pōgu. [Tel.] n. A thread, a string. తంతువు, దారము. A heap, a crowd, an assembly. ప్రోగు, కుప్ప, సమూహము. An ear-ring. పురుష కర్నాభరణము. ముక్కుపోగు a nose-ring. కుట్టుపోగు a wire placed in the ear preparatory to an ear-ring. పోగుపోయు or పోగుతీయు to darn. పోగుత్రాడు pōgu-trāḍu. n. A kind of net composed of lines or cords laid by huntsman as a snare. 'పండినచేలకునరాహ పంఙ్త్కులు చొరరా, కుండ న్దెలనిచామరఖండంబులు పోగుద్రాళ్లు గట్టుదురెరుకుల్.' Kālahas. iii. 11. పోగుచేయు pōgu-chēyu. v. a. To collect, to accumulate, to put together. పోగువారు pōgu-vāru. (పోగు+పారు.) v. n. To surround with a cord. To surround, ఆవరించు.

(p. 918) bharaṇamu bharanamu. [Skt.] n. Cherishing, maintaining, nourishing, supporting భరించుట. Dowry, స్త్రీధనము. Wages, hire. కూలి, జీతము. భుక్తికైనాహరణభరణ శక్తి చూచినాను I did it to the best of my ability to get my bread. భత్యభరణములు batta and wages. Also, a land measure in Ganjam equal to about one-fifth of an acre.

(p. 929) bhōgamu bhōgamu. [Skt.] n. Enjoyment, possession, అనుభవము. Happiness, సుఖము. Food, భోజనము. A snake's body or crest. పాముశరీరము, లేక, పాముపడగ అష్టభోగములు the eight kinds of enjoyment as Home గృహము, Bed శయ్య, Clothes వస్త్రము. Ornaments ఆభరణము, Woman's company స్త్రీ, Flowers పుష్పము, Scent గంధము and Betel తాంబూలము. ఏకభోగము undivided possession. ఏకభోగగ్రామము a village in the hands of one single person. పాలిభోగము separate possession. పాలిభోగగ్రామము a village whereof the land is the property of several persons, each of whom holds his land as a separate property and always retains the same fields. ఈ సంవత్సరము ఒక భోగము పండినది ఒక భోగము పోయినది one crop turned out well, one crop turned out ill. భోగగృహము bhōga gṛihamu. n. A bed room. పడకగది. భోగబంద bhōga-banda. n. A mortgage in which the article pledged or mortgaged may be converted to use, as land, houses, cattle, &c. the profits of which are to be appropriated by the lender or mortgagee in lieu of interest. భోగమంటపము bhōga-manṭapamu. n. An open hall or porch of a temple, in which festivals are celebrated. కళ్యాణ మంటపము. భోగవతి bhōga-vati. n. The name of the Capital of the Nagas or serpents, పాతాళము. శేషసర్పపట్టణము. The name of the infernal Ganges. పాతాళగంగ. A fashionable lady. భోగముగలది. భోగస్త్రీ bhōgā-stri. n. A kept woman, mistress or concubine, a prostitute. 'విచిత్రవీర్యుని భోగస్త్రీయందు విదురునింబుట్టించె.' Vish. vi. 425. భోగశిపత్రి bhōgāṣi-patri. n. A name of Garuda. 'భోగాశిపత్రితరస్ఫూర్త్యనుబావ.' Swa. v. 133. టీ పన్నగాశనపతత్రి. గరుత్మంతుడు. భోగి bhōgi. n. A happy man. భోగముగలవాడు. One who lives in splendour or luxury. అనుభవశాలియైనపురుషుడు. A serpent. సాము. The name given to the eves of some particular feasts. పండుగతొలినాడు. భోగించు bhōginṭsu. v. a. To enjoy, అనుభవించు. To be happy, సుఖించు, భోగించుట bhōginṭsuṭa. n. Enjoyment. Plu. భోగించుటలు. 'మనమానాడుమహావినోదముల ప్రేమల్ మీరభోగించుటల్ వినుము.' Radha. iii. 25. భోగిని bhōgini. n. A royal concubine. రాజు ఉంచిన బోగముది. An inferior wife of king. పట్టాభిషిక్తురాలుకాని రాజుభార్య. A female serpent. ఆడుపాము. భోగ్యత bhōgyata. n. Deliciousness, sweetness. దీనిభోగ్యత దేనికీలేదు nothing is more delicious than this. భోగ్యము bhōgyamu. n. Use, usufruet, enjoyment, or something given in pledge or on mortgage. భోగ్యపత్రము a mortgage bond, wherein the lender assumes the temporary use of the property mortgaged. adj. Enjoyable, fit to be enjoyed, delicious, agreeable as food. అనుభవింపదగిన. ఆ ప్రసాదము భోగ్యముగానుండలేదు that food was not agreeable. భోజనము bhōjanamu. n. Food, a repast or meal, ఆహారము. Eating, కడుపు. భోజనముచేయు to eat, to dine. భోజనకస్తూరి small oranges pickled. భోజరాజు or భోజుడు bhōja-rāju. n. The name of a king celebrated by Sanskrit poets as a bountiful patron. భోజ్యము bhōjyamu. adj. Edible, fit to eat, eatable. భుజింపదగిన n. Food, ఆహారము.

(p. 938) makaramu makaramu. [Skt.] n. An alligator. మొసలి. The sign of the Zodiac called Capricorn, రాశిభేదము. మకరసంక్రమణము or మకరసంక్రాంతి the passing of the sun into Capricon. This is observed as the Pongul feast. పొంగలిపండుగ. మకరకంఠి makara-kanṭhi. n. A necklace shaped like an alligator. మొసలిమూతులుగల కంఠాభరణము. మకరకుండలము makara-kunḍalamu. n. An earring bearing the figure of a crocodile's head. మొసలిముఖము గల కర్ణభూషణము. మకరతోరణము makara-tōranamu. n. A festoon of cloth shaped like a crocodile, మొసలి మొదలైన రూపములను చిత్రవిచిత్రముగా కుట్టి వీధులలో కట్టే తోరణము. మకరాంకుడు, మకరకేతనుడు or మకరధ్వజుడు makarān-kuḍu. n. An epithet of Manmadha, whose banner is an alligator. మన్మథుడు. మకరాలయము ma-kar-ālayamu. n. The sea. సముద్రము. మకరి makari. n. A crocodile, or alligator. మొసలి. మకరిక or మకరికాపత్రము maka-rika. n. Figures of crocodiles drawn in gold dust on the cheeks or breasts of women, చెక్కిళ్లమీదను రొమ్ములమీదను వ్రాసే మొసలిఆకారము. 'మకరీమయరేఖ లురస్థలంబునన్ భావజచిహ్న ముద్రలయిభాసిల.' Vij. Vil. xi. 97. మకరివల makari-vala. n. A snare to catch crocodiles.

(p. 995) mukku or ముకు mukku. [Tel.] n. The nose. నాసిక. The bill or beak of a bird, పక్షిముఖము. The point or tip. చనుముక్కు a nipple. ముక్కు౛ోడనలు a double nose. ౛మిలిముక్కు. 'మునవనల్ దమిబట్టి ముంగాళ్ల ముక్కుజోడనలచీలిచి.' A. v. 122. ముక్కుడుస్సిన uncurbed, broken loose, rampant, ముక్కుతాడుతీసిన. 'వసుధేశముక్కుడుస్సిన పసరముక్రియ.' A. vi. 53. ముక్కుబంటి యైనదనుక satiating his nostrils with fragrance to the full. P. iii. 224. చిలుకముక్కులు and జీనువముక్కులు two sorts of grain. రెండుముక్కులపిట్ట (the double beaked bird) also called మూడు ముక్కలపిక్క and ఎబ్బెరపిక్క the Hornbill, or Toucan. Jerdon. No. 198. 'ముండగోష్ఠికి ముక్కు మొగమేడతనకు.' HD. ii. 1059. ముక్కు మొగము ఎగనట్టు మాట్లాడినాడు he talked as if I was a perfect stranger to him. ముక్కుపట్టనిముత్తెము a pearl not suited to the nose, i.e., a round man in a square hole. ముక్కుకమ్మిక a certain useless forest tree. ముక్కు mukku. v. n. To moan, groan. To mould or turn musty. To spoil or become half rotten. To strain or press, (as in pain.) ముక్క mukka. (Root in A of ముక్కు to be musty or mouldy, &c.) ముక్కపురుగులు weevils in spoilt grain, తవుటిపురుగులు. ముక్కకంపు a frowzy smell. తర్వాత తొండూరిగ్రామము ముక్క ఉరికినందున ఆ నెత్తము విరిచిరి a disease has appeared which is peculiar to that place. ముత్యాలు ముక్కిపోయినవి the pearls were spoiled. ముక్కుగోళ్లు, ముకుగోళ్లు, ముకుగ్రోళ్లు, ముక్కు జెరములు, ముక్కుచెరములు or ముక్కురంధ్రములు mukkugōḷḷu. n. plu. The nostrils. నాసాపుటములు. ముక్కుత్రాడు or ముకుత్రాడు a nose-rope used for curbing oxen. ముక్కుదొమ్మ or ముకుదొమ్మ mukku-domma. n. A sort of fish. H. iv. 225. ముక్కద్దము mukk-addamu. n. A pair of spectacles, సులోచనము, కంటిఅద్ధము. ముక్కమ్మి or ముక్కుకమ్మి muk-kammi. (ముక్కు + కమ్మి.) or ముక్కర mukka-ra. (ముక్కు + రాయి.) n. A nose ring. నాసాభరణము. ముక్కరమాను mukkara-mānu. n. The frame in which the roller (పుల్లిరుసు) of a కపిల well rolls. ముక్కరము muk-ka-ramu. (ముక్కు + కారెము.) n. A nostril, నాసికారంధ్రము. ముక్కిడి mukkiḍi (ముక్కు + ఇడి) adj. Noseless. ముక్కులేని. ముక్కిడిరోగము caries of the bones of the nose. 'ముక్కిడి తొత్తుకు ముత్తెంపునత్తేల.' రామలింగశతకము. ముక్కిడి or కొండముక్కిడి. n. A certain large tree, Schrebera swietenoides. Rox. i. 109. ముక్కుదూలము or ముకుదూలము mukku-dūlam. n. The bridge or division of the nose. ముక్కునడిమియెముక. ముక్కుపురిడి or ముక్కుపూరేడుపిట్ట mukku-puriḍi. n. The common snipe. (Jerdon.) ఒకపక్షి. ముక్కుపొడి mukku-poḍi. n. Snuff. నస్యము, పొడుము. ముక్కుపోగు mukku-pōgu. n. A nose ring, ముక్కుమ్మి, నత్తు, ముక్కుబంతి or ముకుబంతి mukku-banti. n. A disease that attacks the nose of a cow through cold. ముక్కుముంగర mukku-mungara. n. A certain useless forest tree. ముక్కులు mukkulu. n. Rice flour. మిక్కిలి చిన్ననూకలు. A kind of cake.

(p. 1025) merugu or మెరుంగు merugu. [Tel. from మెరయు.] n. Polish, lustre, brightness. కాంతి. Lightning. మెరపు. Grease, oil, melted butter. నెయ్యి మెదలగువానిజిడ్డు. 'మెరుగువేయకగాని మృదువుగాదన్నంబు.' A necklace worn by women. ఒక కంఠాభరణము. మెరుగుపెట్టు merugu-peṭṭu. v. a. To polish. కాంతివచ్చునట్లు చేయు. మెరుగుబోడి merugu-bōḍi. n. A beautiful woman, మెరుపువలె మనోజ్ఞురాలగు ఆడుది. మెరుగురిక్క or మెరుగుడురిక్క merugu-rikka. n. Coral. పగడము. A bright star, కాంతిగలచుక్క.

(p. 1098) lalantika lalantika. [Skt.] n. A necklace hanging as low as the waist. కంఠాభరణము.

(p. 1134) vartulamu vartulamu. [Skt.] adj. Round, circular, globular, spherical. గుండ్రని, ఎట్రువైన, బటువైన. 'వర్తులాభరణము.' వసు. v.

(p. 1143) vasati vasati. [Skt. from వస్ to dwell.] n. A house, dwelling. ఇల్లు. Convenience. commodiousness, comfort. హాయి, సౌఖ్యము, అనుకూలము. Night, రాత్రి. Also, a pension, an allowance of money, భరణము. వసతి దారుడు a pensioner, a holder of an allowance of rent-free land. A proprietor of land, a landholder. అక్కడ నీళ్లవసతిలేనందున as good water is not easily procurable there. ఆ యిల్లు నిండా వసతిగాలేదు the house is not very convenient. వారికి ఆ గ్రామములో వసతులు ఏర్పరిచినాడు, లేక, ఇచ్చినాడు he granted them a living in that village. వసతిగానుండే vasati-gā-n-unḍē. adj. Convenient, commodious. హాయిగానుండే. అక్కడ నీకు వసతిగా నుంటే దిగు if you find a suitable spot you may halt or put up there.
