(p. 68) abhayamu a-bhayamu. [Skt. lit. fearlessness.] n. An assurance of security: warrant of sefety, a promise of shelter, impunity or protection. భయములేదనడము, నీకు భయము లేదు నేను ఉన్నాననడము, భరవసా. ఆయన నాకు అభయమిచ్చియున్నాడు he told me not to be afraid. అభయహస్తము the hand of protection.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 117) ābharaṇamu ābharaṇamu. [Skt.] n. Ornament, decoration, jewels. ఆభరణుడు n. He who wears jewels.

(p. 123) ārōhaṇamu ārōhaṇamu. [Skt.] n. Ascent, a staircase, Elevating, raising. ధ్వజారోహణము a certain rite at the beginning of a feast when the 'flag is raised.' ఆరోహము ārōhamu, n. Length, ascent, rising, creeping up. The buttocks. పిరుదులు, నితంబము. 'ఆరోహభరముననడుగులు తడబడ.' B. VIII. 450. స్వరారోహము rising notes, swell in music. ఆరోహించు ārōhinṭsu. v. n. To mount upon. ఆరోహుడు or ఆరోహకుడు a rider. గుర్రపు రౌతు.

(p. 178) ṛṣi ṛishi. [Skt.] n. A prophet or saint, gifted with supernatural powers. A sage. The author of a spell or prayer. cf. ముని and యోగి. సప్తర్షులు means (1.) the 'seven sages,' viz., మరీచి, అత్రి, అంగీరుడు, పులస్త్యుడు, పులహుడు, క్రతువు, వసిష్ఠుడు; (or) కశ్యపుడు, అత్రి, భరద్వాజుడు, విశ్వామిత్రుడు, గౌతముడు, జమదగ్ని, వసిష్ఠుడు; (2) the constellation of the Great Bear. A proverb says ఋషిమూలము నదీమూలము the origin of a sage is as obscure as that of a river.

(p. 217) ōḍika ōḍika. [Tel.] n. A stream, a current a river. ప్రవాహము. 'వేణీభరంబట్టిట్టై కటిజిమ్మచీకటులు గానశ్రుప్రజంబోడికల్గట్టన్.' Swa. iv. 104.

(p. 238) kattera kattera. [Tel.] n. Scissors. The constellation or sign called కృత్తిక. The period of time when the sun is between the signs భరణి, రోహిణి and కృత్తిక. కత్తెర కాలు kattera-kālu. n. The upright cross pieces of wood in a dooly or litter, that connect the bottom with the pole above. కత్తెరగడ్డము kattera-gaddamu. n. A cropped beard. కత్తెరగాయము kattera-gāyamu. n. A certain kind of window గవాక్ష విశేషము. కత్తెరచీల kattera-chīla. n. A pin on which a lever acts. మీట ఆడే చీల. కత్తెరదొంగ kattera-donga. n. A cut purse. కత్తెరబావిలీలు kattera-bāvilīlu. n. An ornament of gold and gems worn by women near the top of the ear. కత్తెరయెండ kattera-yeṇḍa. n. Fierce heat. కత్తెరరాయ kattera-rāyi. n. Marble; a kind of black stone, which is sonorous like metal. కత్తెరవాసములు kattera-vāsamulu. n. Bamboos arranged against each other like the blades of scissors.

(p. 261) kaḷatramu kaḷatramu. [Skt.] n. A wife కీర్తిలక్ష్మీళత్రుడు he who is wedded to glory and prosperity. విశ్వంభరాకళత్రుడు ruler of the land.

(p. 290) kukṣi kukshi. [Skt.] n. Stomach, కడువు Hunger జఠరము. కుక్షింభరి kukshim-bhari. n. A glutton. పొట్టనింపుకొనువాడు, తిండిపోతు. కుక్షింభరిత్వము kukshim-bharitvamu. n. Gluttony.

(p. 1400) kusumbharāgamu kusumbha-rāgamu. [Skt.] n. Feigned love. బయటుకిమాత్రము వుశేషముగా కనబడి లోపల బొత్తిగాలేని అనురాగము.

(p. 302) kūkuḍuvatti kūkuḍu-vatti. [Tel.] n. Gossamer. కూకుడువత్తులయ్యె it was driven away like gossamer, i.e. piecemeal, bit by bit. నలినూకలు, తుత్తుమురు. 'కుంభిరదప్రహారముల కూకుడువత్తులనైనమిన్ను విశ్వంభరగూలునన్,' P. i. 50. See also L. iii. 139. and P. ii. 104.

(p. 316) koṭṭu koṭṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To strike. గంట కొట్టినది the clock has struck. గాలి కొట్టుచున్నది the wind is blowing. కంపు కొట్టినది it smells badly. కొల్లగొట్టినాడు he plundered. పిడుగు ఆ చెట్టును చీలగొట్టినది the thunder bolt struck and split the tree. దాన్ని పురుగులుకొట్టినవి insects have attacked it. వానికి ముఖము కొట్టినది he is surfeited or gorged. వానకొట్టినది there was rain. వానికి ఎండకొట్టినది he was exposed to the sun. కొట్టినపిండి a well bruised flour, -- a phrase implying thorough knowledge of any subject. వానికి రామాయణము కొట్టినపిండి he is thoroughly acquainted with the Rāmāyaṇa. 'కోమలినాకునెట్టియెడ కొట్టినపిండి సమస్తలలోకముల్ నీమదికింపులైనయవి నిర్భరశక్తినిదేసమర్థుడన్.' KP. vi. 30.
