(p. 38) aḍḍamu or అడ్డమైన aḍḍamu. [Tel.] adj. Cross. నన్ను అడ్డమైన మాటలు ఆడినాడు he reviled me. అడ్డమైనకూళ్లు any food that comes to the hand. నాకు అడ్డమైనపని పెట్టుతున్నాడు he employs me in anything that comes to hand. వాడు అడ్డదోవలు తొక్కుచున్నాడు he goes the wrong way to work. అడ్డకట్ట aḍḍa-kaṭṭa. [Tel.] n. A dam or bank, an embankment. సేతువు, చేలకు నీళ్లు నిలిచేటందుకు కట్టిన గట్టు. అడ్డకత్తి aḍḍakatti. A broad sword. పట్టిసము. అడ్డకమ్మి aḍḍa-kammi. A cross piece, the cross selvage in cloth. అడ్డకర్ర aḍḍa-karra. A cross-piece of timber: an obstacle: a bar. విఘూతము. నా పనికి అడ్డకర్రలు వేయుచున్నాడు he throws difficulties in my way. See అడ్డము. అడ్డగోడ addagōḍa a cross-wall. అడ్డచాపు aḍḍa-tṣāpu. A cross beam. అడ్డవాసము. అడ్డతల aḍḍa-tala. A narrow projecting head: having a narrow fore head. నిడుపు తల. అడ్డదూలము aḍḍa-dūlamu. A cross beam. అడ్డదోవ aḍḍa-dōva. A crossway. అడ్డపలక aḍḍa-palaka. A cross plank. అడ్డపట్టె. aḍḍa-paṭṭe. A thick board drawn by two oxen used for smoothing a ploughed field after the grain is sown. మడిసమముచేసే మాను. అడ్డుపడు aḍḍa-paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To interpose, to help; to obstruct, impede. విఘూతమగు, వారించు. నా పనికి అడ్డుపడ్డాడు he threw obstacles in my way. భార్యను కొట్టబోతే కొడుకు అడ్డుపడినాడు as he was going to strike his wife his son interposed. నేనడ్డపడకపోతే వాండ్లు వత్తురు had I not interposed they would have died. అడ్డపాటు aḍḍa-pāṭu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, obstruction. అడ్డి, విఘ్నము. అడ్డబాస aḍḍa-bāsa. n. A nose jewel. బులాకి. అడ్డబొట్టు aḍḍa-boṭṭu. A cross mark worn by the Hindus on their fore-head. అడ్డమాను aḍḍa-mānu. A cross bar. వాడు అడ్డవాట్లు వేస్తున్నాడు he throws impediments in the way.

(p. 81) arundhati arundhati. [Skt.] n. The wife of the sage Vasishtha, celebrated for her virtue వసిష్ఠుని భార్య. A star in the Pleiades. A marriage ceremonies అరుంధతి is invoked by the bridegroom as a pattern of conjugal excellence and the star in the Pleiades which represents the wife of Vasishtha is pointed out to the bridal pair.

(p. 82) arugu arugu. [Tel.] v. n. To go, pass, proceed, walk. To digest as food. To be worn away by being used or rubbed; waste away. వెళ్లు, జీర్ణమగు, క్షీణించు, క్షయించు. అరగతీయు araga-tīyu. v. a. To rub off. అరుగుడు aruguḍu. n. The act of wearing away; attrition శిథిలము అరుగుదెంచు or అరుదెంచు arugu-denṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To come. వచ్చు. To go. పోవు. 'పరమధర్మాత్ముల భార్యాసమేతులనపహసింప దలంచియరుగుదెంచె.' M. iii. 5. 455. ఆరుదేడు he will not come 'అయ్యమరులు దివినుండి నేలకరు దేనేలా.' R. iii. 22. అరుగుపడు arugu-paḍu. v. i. To wear away, క్షయించు, నశించు, హీనమగు.

(p. 85) arrāḍu arrāḍu. [Tel. అర్రు+ఆడు.] v. n. To hesitate, waver, roam about, wander about in distress. తడబడు, అల్లాడు, దేవులాడు.' ఒలువనితిలలకు నొలిచినతిలలీనర్రాడు వసుమతీ సురభార్యా తిలకమునందు.' P. ii. 4. 'పరువంబు గాగజొప్పడని మామిడి తేనె లాననాసాసడ నర్రాడునవియు.' Pariz. iii. 97.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 148) uṇḍu uṇḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To be, exist, live. 2. To reside, dwell. 3. To remain, stop, stay. 4. To last, endure, continue. 5. To keep still, stay quiet; 6. To wait. To stand over, remain as a surplus. ఉండిపోవు, శేషించు. 7. To have. నాకు భార్య ఉండగా as I have a wife. 'కనకము ఉన్నవాడు' he who possesses gold. -- 8. To keep a feast. విజయదశమి ఉండినారు they kept the Vijaya Dasami feast. ఉన్న మాట యిది this is the fact. ఉన్నరూపు the true form, the reality. నేను అక్కడ పది దినములుంటిని I remained there ten days, వాడు (ఇంట్లో) ఉన్నాడా is he at home? మీ తండ్రి బాగా ఉన్నాడా is your father well? ఉన్నట్టుండి suddenly, just as they were. ఉన్నారు they are; రేపుదాక ఉంటారా will they remain till to-morrow? అక్కడ ఉన్నారా are they there?

(p. 207) ojjē ozza. [Skt. from ఉపాధ్యాయ.] n. A tutor. A priest. ఉపాధ్యాయుడు, పురోహితుడు. యాజకుడు. ఒజ్జేనము or ఒ౛్జదనము ozzanamu. n. Tutorship, tution ఉపాధ్యాయత్వము. ఒ౛్జసాని ozza-banti. n. A model copy set by a teacher మేలుబంతి. ఒజ్జసాని the wife of a teacher ఉపాధ్యాయుని భార్య.

(p. 288) kuṇṭi kunṭi. [Tel.] adj. Lame, crooked. గాలికుంట్లు windgalls, rheumatism. కుంటితనము kunṭi-tanamu. n. Lameness, a crippled state. కుంటుkunṭu. n. Lameness, crookedness. A lame man కుంటు పిచ్చుక, కుంటివాడు. v. n. To limp, to go lame. కుంటుపడు kunṭu-paḍu. v. n. To become lame. కుంటియగు. To fail, or break down as an undertaking. విఘ్నమగు. 'అపుడుద్దాలకు డాగ్రహించి నిజభార్యంజూచి నిర్బాగ్యురా, లపవిత్రంబగుపార్వణంబు నవలిలంబెంటపైవైచి కుం టుపడంజేసితి శ్రాద్ధకర్మమని.' Jai. iv. 111. To be diminished తగ్గు. To be cut off తెగు. కుంటుపారు kunṭu-pāru. v. n. To become weak. బలహీనమగు.

(p. 306) kṛtya kṛitya. [Skt.] n. The goddess of death, corresponding to Cotytto, or Diana Taurica or Hecate. సంహారకదేవత. 'భార్గవ నిర్మితయై కృత్యచేతంజంపింప సమకట్టిన.' V. P. ii.312.

(p. 325) kōḍalu kōḍalu. [Tel.] n. A daughter-in-law. Also, a wife భార్య. మా కోడలు=my wife.

(p. 341) kṣētramu kshētramu. [Skt.] n. A field. పంటభూమి. A place, a spot స్థలము. The body శరీరము. A wife భార్య. A sacred spot, a place of pilgrimage పుణ్యభూమి. Starvation పస్తు. (this meaning is peculiar to Telugu.) నిన్న కటికిక్షేత్రముగానుండినాడు he was starving all yesterday. క్షేత్రములు చేయు to starve. క్షేత్రగణితము kshētragaṇamu. n. Mensuration. క్షేత్రజ్ఞుడు kshētragnyuḍu. n. The soul. ఆత్మ, జీవము. A husbandman. కాపువాడు. A. ii. 100. క్షేత్రపాలుడు kshētra-pāluḍu. n. An inferior manifestation or terrific form of Siva. భైరవుడు. 'క్షేత్రపాలున కుదికినచీరలారు చాకిరేవులగములయ్యెసకల దిశలు.' A. ii. 55. క్షేత్రాజీవుడు a cultivator దున్ను కొని బ్రతుకువాడు.

(p. 368) giri giri. [Skt.] n. A hill, a mountain. A circle. గిరిక girika. n. A mouse చిట్టెలుక. Name of the wife of King Vasu. వసురాజుభార్య. గిరికన్య giri-kanya. n. Daughter of the hills: a title of Pārvati. గిరికర్ణిక giri-karṇika. n. A certain plant, the camel thorn; or the Persian manna plant Alhagimaurorum. (Watts). తెల్లగినియచెట్టు. H. iv. 20. గిరికొను giri-konu. v. n. To surround or encircle. చుట్టుకొను. 'అరవరలైన రధంబులు నెరిదప్పంబడిన యశ్వనికరంబులుబెందురుచుగ కూలినకరులును గిరిగొనియెను సమరమున మేదినీతలమెల్లన్.' M. VI. ii. 141. గిరిజ girija. n. Lit. The 'hill-horn,' i.e., Pārvati. A metal లోహము. గిరిధరుడు giri-dharuḍu. n. (p. 416) cinna chinna. [Tel.] adj. Small, little, short, young, mean, trifling, insignificant, narrow: disgraceful. ముఖము చిన్నచేసుకొను to be ashamed, to be downcast or sorrowful. Junior, Younger, smaller. చిన్నచూపు humiliation, scorn. దేవుడు చిన్నచూపుచూస్తే యెవరేమి చేయవచ్చును when God withdraws his favour what can man do? చిన్న ఆకురాయి chinna-ākurāyi. n. The Blackheaded Cuckoo-Shrike, Campophaga sykesi. (F.B.I.) చిన్నకారు chinna-kāru. n. Childhood, youth. చిన్నకారుపిల్లలు young children. చిన్నతనము chinna-tanamu. n. Infancy: littleness, smallness. Disgrace, dishonor. ఇందువల్ల కులమునకంతా చిన్నతనము వచ్చినది this is a disgrace to the whole caste. చిన్నది chinnadi. n. A little one. A girl, a lass. ఈ చిన్నది అతనిభార్య this girl is his wife. పెద్ద చిన్నది the eldest daughter; or, a grown girl.

(p. 418) ciramu chiramu. [Skt.] adj. Long (as regards time.) ఆలస్యము, కాలవిలంబము. చిరకాలము a long while. చిరాయువు long life. చిరంజీవి or చిరజీవి chiran-jīvi. n. What is long lived: (particularly) a crow. కాకి. adj. Long lived. చిరకాలము జీవించువాడు. This is a term of affection, implying a blessing, often used to inferiors, children, younger brothers or other relations. చిరంజీవులైన మాసీతారామయ్య my brother Sītāräma; చిరంజీవులైన కొల్లా వెంకన్నభార్య గతించిన సంగతి regarding the death of our dear cousin's wife. చిరంతనము or చిరత్నము chirantanamu. adj. Old, ancient, antiquated. బహుదినములది, పాతది.

(p. 456) chāya chhāya. [Skt.] n. A shadow, reflected image; colour. ఛాయాచోరకవి cḥāyā-chōra-kavi. n. A plagiarist ఛాయాతరువు cḥāyā-taruvu. n. A large tree useful only for the shade or shelter it gives. నీడచేతనే మిక్కిలి ఉపయోగకరము గానుండే పెద్దచెట్టు. ఛాయాపుత్రుడు chhāyā-putruḍu. n.
