Thus four 'feet' make one stanza, or quatrain. చెట్టు అడుగు the foot of a tree. అడుగురాయి a stone at the bottom కొండ అడుగుననుండే ఊరు a village at the foot of a mountain. ఆ కథను అడుగునుంచి చెప్పు tell the story from the beginning. కుండ అడుగు the bottom of a pot. అడుగంటకోయు to cut off by the root. అడుగుతో పెళ్లగించు to eradicate, to root out. అడుగారిపోవు to be utterly ruined. నా మాటకు అడుగుదాటకు do not transgress my command. వాని అడుగుల జాడ పట్టుకొని పోయినారు they traced his footsteps and followed him. అడుగడుగున or అడుగడుగునకు step by step, now and then, often. అన్నము అడుగంటినది the rice has burnt at the bottom of the pot.

Opinion, rumour, వృత్తాంతము. అతడు నీ మాట చెప్పలేదు he did not speak of you. ఇది వేరే మాట this is another affair, another thing. వానిమాటకాదు this is not about him, I am not talking about him. గడియకు ఒకమాట చెప్పినాడు he changed his mind every hour. మంచిమాట (interj.) Very well. దాన్ని గురించి రెండో మాటలేదు there is no alternative. వారివిద్ద మాటలుపడినాడు he was reproached or reprimanded by them. In some phrases the word మాట need not be translated. Thus, ఆమె తిరిగీ వస్తున్నదనేమాట తెలిసి knowing that she would return. నేను దానిని కొన్నమాట రూఢి it is very true I bought it. ఆమాటే యెరుగను I know nothing of it. ఇందుచేత మాటవచ్చును by this you will get into disgrace. అతడు మాటతప్పలేదు he did not fail in his promise. మాట తప్పినవాడు మాలవాడు a promise breaker is a pariah, i.e., is a mean wretch. నేను పోయినమాట వానికి ఎట్లా తెలిసినది how did he know that I was gone? అతడు పోయేమాట ఉండేమాటా does he propose to go or stay? వాడు ఉండేమాట యింకా తెలియలేదు I do not as yet know that he will remain. మాటకుమాట word for word, literally. నా మాట అడుగుదాటకు transgress not my command. తనమీద మాటరాకుండా ఇట్లా చేసెను he did this to avoid blame. మాటవినుట to obey. ఎంతమాట what nonsense! వానిమాట వాని ఒడిలో వేసినాను I acted as he desired. నీకు మాట నాకు మూట a command is easy to give but hard to perform, or a word from you will make me rich. వెయ్యిమాటలేల why discuss it at length, in a word. ఆ పెండ్లి మాట యీ గ్రంథములో లేదు there is no mention of the marriage in this book నామాటవేరు, నీమాట వేరు I say one thing you say another, my opinion is different from yours, my case is quite different from yours. వానికి నాకు మాటలు లేవు he and I are not on speaking terms. వానితో నీకేమిమాటలు why do you speak with him? ఈమాట వింటే ఆయన యేమనును if he hears of this what will he say? కడపటిమాటయేమి what was the upshot of the business? ఇప్పట్లో వాని మాట సాగదు he has now no influence. కడకు వానిమాటే ముందరికివచ్చినది at last his words proved true. దానిని గురించి ఇంకా యేమాటా తెలియలేదు I do not yet know the result. మాటలకు పట్టుకొంటే విడవడు if he begins talking he will never stop. అదెక్కడిమాట what nonsense! such a thing is impossible. మాటలు మంచివే కాణి మనసు మంచిదికాదు he talks well but has a bad heart. ఇంకా మాటలు రాని బిడ్డ a child that cannot yet speak. వానికి ఆ ఊరిలో మాట వాసికద్దు లేక మాట సాగుతుంది he has influence in the town. ఆయన మాటకు ఎదురులేదు his word is law. మాటలకుమాత్రము పేదరికములేదు as far as words go he is rich enough. ఒక మాట యిచ్చి పదిమాటలు తీసుకొన్నాడు his reproaches were returned ten-fold. మాటకాడు māṭa-kāḍu. n. A good public speaker, సభయందు భయములేక మాటాడువాడు, వక్త. మాటకారి māṭa-kāri. n. A skilful speaker, యుక్తిగా మాటాడువాడు. A talkative person, వాచాలుడు. మాటలమారి māṭala-māri. n. A talkative person, మిక్కిలి మాటాడువాడు. మాటలాడు, మాటాడు or మాట్లాడు māṭa-l-āḍu. v. n. To speak, talk, converse, to reproach. నన్నెందుకు ఊరికె మాటలాడుతావు why reproach me for nothing? S. iii. 41.

(p. 993) mundu mundu. [Tel.] n. The front. ఎదురు. adj. Fronting, fore. Previous, former, preceding, early. After, next. ముందువెనుకలు before and behind, what comes before and what comes behind. adv. In front, in the beginning, at first, first. ముందుపని ముందరచేయవలెను you must first do what is first wanted. దానిముందుమాటకేమి అర్థము what is the meaning of the preceding word? ముందువెనుకలుగా పోవుచుండిరి they were going along, some before, some behind. ర వంతైనా ముందువెనుక చూడక without considering causes or consequences. ముందుకు వెనుకకు backwards and forwards, to and fro. Postposition: Before. వారు రాకముందు before they come. ముందుపడు or ముందగు mundu-paḍu. v. n. To go before, to lead. ముందర or ముందల mundara. n. The front, ఎదురు. A former time, మునుపు. Beginning, మొదలు. adv. Before, in front. First, in the first instance. Formerly, previously. Hereafter, next, in future. After, following, next. అంతకుముందగ before that. ముందరి or ముందటి fronting, opposite, former, previous. ముందటి కాలమునందు in former times. ముందరిపోటు a wound in front. 'ముందరిపోటులుమానును ముందెందైననుగలదు.' Vēma. ముందరిమాట. lit. the word before, i.e., the following word; also, the preceding word. ముందరికి forwards. ముందర పల్లము వెనుక మిట్ట a ditch before, and a hill behind, i.e., to be in a fix, to be caught in the horns of a dilemma. ముందరికి తెచ్చు to bring forward, promote. ముందరికి వచ్చు to come to the front, to be promoted, to prosper. ముందల mundala. (ముందు + తల.) n. The front part of the head, శిరస్సు యొక్క ముందుభాగము. 'ధట్టించిముందలల్ బట్టియీడ్చి.' URK. iv. 112. ముందట mun-daṭa. adv. In front, before. ఎదుట.

A talkative man, one who talks idly or blamably, a tattler, వాగుపోతు, ప్రేలేవాడు, మాటకారి. 'వాచాటులగు జరఠవనితలు.' A. iv. 43. వాచాలము vāchālamu. adj. Chattering, talkative, gabbling, talking much. ప్రేలే, వాగే, పనికిమాలిన మాటలాడే. వాచాలత or వాచాలత్వము vāchālata. n. Talkativeness, readiness or fluency of speech, tattling, ప్రేలడము, వాగడము, తరచుగా మాటలాడడము. 'రాజెల్కలున్ వాచాలత్వముజూపె.' G. vii. 10. వాచించు vāchinṭsu. v. a. To tell, చెప్పు. To read, చదువు. వాచికము vāchikamu. n. News, intelligence, tidings. చెప్పిపంపించిన వర్తమానము, సమాచారము. 'కాంచన పత్రికావళుల గౌతుకమాచక వాచికంబు వ్రాయించిసమస్తదేశ వసు ధేశులకంపిన.' Vasu. v. 80. టీ వాచికము, సమదేశవాక్కు. వాచ్యము vāchyamu. adj. Fit or proper to be spoken or said. చెప్పదగిన. Blameworthy, vile,contemptible, low, out-caste. నిందింపదగిన, నింద్యము, హీనము. In grammar, the voice or mood of a verb. కర్మవాచ్యము the active voice; కర్మణివాచ్యము the passive voice.

(p. 1149) vāṭu vāṭu. [Tel. from పడు and పాటు.] n. The act of throwing. వైచుట. A blow, stroke, దెబ్బ. A mode, manner, way, fashion, విధము. రీతి. Convenience. కత్తివాటు an ineision or cut. 'మాయయామాటకు మారుత్తరంబు వాయెత్తగాలేక వాటు దప్పినను, జోహారు వన్నట్లు.' L. vii. 77. Turning over, upsetting. బండి వాటుపడును the cart will upset. వాటుగాలు vāṭu-gālu. n. A lame leg, a leg that has a convulsive twitch in walking. వడవడములో పక్కవాటుగా పోయేకాలు. 'వాటుగాలును రోలువంటినడుము.' HK. iv. 143. 'వాటుగాలనరాదుచేటుదెచ్చు.' S. ii. 20. వాటుగాలు వేసుకొనుచు వచ్చినాడు he came twitching along or limping. వాటురాయి vāṭu-rāyi. n. A stone for slinging, a pebble or stone that could be easily flung at a person, రువ్వడమునకుతగిన రాయి. 'ద్వి ఒలకులబూడిదెయును వాటురాలు.' BD. v. 680. వాటులాడు vāṭul-āḍu. v. n. To fight, కొట్లాడు. వాట్లీడు vāṭl-īḍu. n. A quarrelsome man, కొట్లాడువాడు.

Tidings, intelligence, news, talk, conversation, a report. వర్తమానము, వృత్తాంతము, మాట, సంభాషణ. వారు వెళ్లినాడన్న వార్త ఒకటే కాని వాడు నిజముగా వెళ్లలేదు the report is that he went, but in reality he did not go. 'కలలోనగన్న వార్తలకింతవలవంత కేమి కారణమనియెంచుకొంటి.' Anirudh. ii. 158. వార్తకాడు vārta-kāḍu. n. A talkative person. మాటకారి. 'నేర్తునన్న వారువార్తకాడు.' Vēma. 450. వార్తకెక్కు vārto-k-ekku. v. n. To obtain notoriety. ప్రసిద్ధినిపొందు. 'గువ్వకొరకుమేనుగోసిచ్చి శిబిరాజు వార్తకెక్కి చాలవన్నెకెక్కె.' Vēma. 289. వార్తలాడు vārtaḷ-āḍu. v. n. To talk, speak, converse. మాట్లాడు, సంభాషించు. వార్తావహుడు or వార్తికుడు vārtā-vahuḍu. n. A messenger, వెళ్లి వర్తమానమును తెలిసికొని పోయి చెప్పువాడు.
