(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 13) antyamu antyamu. [Skt.] adj. Final, last, ultimate, concluding. కడపటి. అంత్యనియమము rhyme, the last syllables corresponding. అంత్యదశ the last con dition, i. e., death. అంత్యధనము the last member of an arithmetical series. అంత్యమూలము in arith: the last or greatest root in the square. అంత్యకాలము last time, the time of one's end. అంత్యకులుడు or అంత్యజుడు n. A pariah. మాలవాడు.

(p. 13) antramu antramu. [Skt.] n. An entrail, a gut. పేగు. అంత్రవృద్ధి inguinal hernia, rupture. అంత్రమాలిక a garland of guts, a necklace of sausages.

(p. 18) aṃśuvu amṣuvu. [Skt.] n. A ray or light, a beam. కిరణము. అంశుజాలము amṣujālamu. [Skt.] n. A garland of the rays of light, a halo. అంశుమాలి amṣu-māli. [Skt.] n. He who is girded with rays. An epithet of the sun. సూర్యుడు. అంశుమంతుడు amṣuman-tuḍu. [Skt.] n. The sun or moon. సూర్యుడు. A rich man.

(p. 21) akṣasaramu or అక్షసూత్రము aksha-saramu. [Skt.] n. A rossary or string of beads to repeat prayers over. జపమాలిక. 'అక్షసూత్రము ద్రీప్పునంగుళీతతి.' T. 4. 223. 'అక్షసరంబాద్రా్ంశుకమక్షయకర పాత్రమమర నతడప్పురిలోభిక్షాందేహి యటంచును.' H. 4. 211.

(p. 110) ajavañjavamu āja-vanjavamu. [Skt.] n. The world, earthly ties. A family. సంసారము. 'ఆజవంజవభ్రమాతీత మార్గుడై.' (Chenn. iv. 132.) He who is freed from earthly ties. అజవంజవమానమాలిన్యము worldy defilement.

(p. 37) aḍugu or అడుగుకొను aḍugu. [Tel.] v. To beg. To entreat. వేడుకొను, బతిమాలుకొను. అడుగుకొని తిను. v. n. To live by alms. తిరిపెత్తుకొని జీవించు.

(p. 51) anātha a-nātha. [Skt.] adj. Without a master or protector, forlorn, unprotected, without a husband. దక్షతలేని, దిక్కులేని, మొగుడులేని. అనాథ a-nādha. n. A destitute, a poor helpless wretch. నిరాదరువుగా నుండేవాడు, దిక్కుమాలినవాడు.

(p. 51) anāyakamu a-nāyakamu. [Skt.] adj. n. Being without a leader. Used for అరాజకము. Anarchy, misrule, confusion. అనాయకుడు n. He who is forlorn or helpless. దిక్కుమాలిన వాడు, నాధుడు లేనివాడు.

(p. 55) anupayuktamu un-upaỵuktamu. [Skt.] adj. Useless. unnecessary, unserviceable. కొరగాని, పనికిమాలిన.

(p. 66) aprayōjakamu a-prayōjakamu. [Skt.] adj. Unserviceable, fruitless, useless. ఉపయోగము కాని, పనికిరాని. అప్రయోజనము n. A useless man. పనికిమాలినవాడు.

(p. 80) ariga or అరిగె ariga. [Tel.] n. A large disk, like a shield, held in processions as a royal ensign. డాలువలె బ్రహ్మాండముగా నుండేటిది, దీన్ని రాజులయెదుట పట్టుకొనెదరు. 'తేరులుకలముల తెరుగునదిరుగగా గరులుమైననాగా దిగిరులబ్రోల, నరిగెబిళ్లలుకమాలకృతి మెరయుగా నడిదంబులను మీలననుకరింప.' G. i. 22.

(p. 177) ūlamāla ūlamāla. [Tel.] n. Pain, anxiety తహతహ. ఊలమాలకుడుచు to suffer pain or anxiety. తహతహపడు.

(p. 182) ekkuva ekkuva. [Tel.] n. Excess, greatness, eminence. Particularity, peculairity. ఆధిక్యము, విశేషము. అతని దగ్గిర పుస్తకాలు ఎక్కువగా లేవు he has not many books. ఎక్కువ ekkuva. adj. Great, peculiar, remarkable, singular. అధికము. ఎక్కువ పాతదికాదు it is not very old. ఎక్కువళ్రమకాదు it is no great trouble. ఎక్కువతక్కువ ekkuva-takkuva. n. More or less, uneveness, irregularity, ups and downs. కొంచెము ఎక్కువతక్కువగా నూరు రూపాయలు about 100 Rupees. మాలో నేదైనా యెక్కువ తక్కువ ఉంటే తమరు క్షమించవలెను please to excuse all errors.

(p. 190) eruka eruka. [Tel. from ఎరుగు] n. Knowledge, understanding. తెలివి, జ్ఞానము; acquaintance పరిచయము; notice, information, report, intimation.
