(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 37) aḍugu or అడుగుకొను aḍugu. [Tel.] v. To beg. To entreat. వేడుకొను, బతిమాలుకొను. అడుగుకొని తిను. v. n. To live by alms. తిరిపెత్తుకొని జీవించు.

(p. 182) ekkuva ekkuva. [Tel.] n. Excess, greatness, eminence. Particularity, peculairity. ఆధిక్యము, విశేషము. అతని దగ్గిర పుస్తకాలు ఎక్కువగా లేవు he has not many books. ఎక్కువ ekkuva. adj. Great, peculiar, remarkable, singular. అధికము. ఎక్కువ పాతదికాదు it is not very old. ఎక్కువళ్రమకాదు it is no great trouble. ఎక్కువతక్కువ ekkuva-takkuva. n. More or less, uneveness, irregularity, ups and downs. కొంచెము ఎక్కువతక్కువగా నూరు రూపాయలు about 100 Rupees. మాలో నేదైనా యెక్కువ తక్కువ ఉంటే తమరు క్షమించవలెను please to excuse all errors.

(p. 218) ōnamālu ōnamāla. [Tel.] n. The Alphabet, so named, because it commences with the salutation to God 'ōm Namah.'

(p. 257) kalaya or కలయంగ kalaya. [Tel.] adv. Together: on all sides అంతట. All at once. (See కలియు of which this is the Inf. in A.) మాలో కలయచూచె he attempted to join us.

(p. 353) gaḍḍamu gaḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. The chin: the beard. గడ్డముపట్టి బతిమాలుట to beseech. గడ్డముపెంచుకొను to grow a beard. 'గడ్డంబుకలిగిన కతంబున యోషకాదు.' కాశీ. viii.

(p. 449) cuṭṭu ṭsuṭṭu. [Tel.] v. a. To go about, to go round. To roll, wrap up, to wind up, to encircle or clasp in an embrace. To hem in, surround, to overtake (as sin does). To draw a circle. To make small ciphers, thus: సున్నచుట్టు, క్రారావడిచుట్టు to write o or ; పాగాచుట్టు to tie a turban. చుట్టుకొను or చుట్టుపారు to surround, hem in, roll up. To turn, to go round. దోవచుట్టుకొని వేళ్లుచున్నది here the road makes a sweep. చుట్టు n. A turn, a round, a circuit, a circumference. A turn or bout: a time. A toe ring, worn by women కాలియుంగరము, తలచుట్టు a turban. గోరుచుట్టు a whitlow. ఎన్నిచుట్లు చెప్పేది how often am I to tell you? చుట్టు adj. & adv. Around, round about, out of the direct way. చుట్టలుగు, చుట్టువాలు or చుట్టుకైదువు ṭsuṭṭ-alugu. (చుట్టు+అలుగు.) n. The Discus of Vishnu చక్రమనే ఆయుధము. R. iii. 42. చుట్టిల్లు a round hut without posts or pillars: చుట్టివచ్చు to go round anything; ప్రదక్షిణముచేయు. To surround పరివేష్టించు. చుట్టుకొల్లారము, చుట్టుకొల్లారు or చుట్టుమాలె ṭsuṭṭu-kollāramu. n. A house built round an open area, with a chamber at each corner and a gallery between. చుట్టుగుల్ల ṭsuṭṭu-gulla. n. A volute shell. గుండ్రని శంఖము. చుట్టుదల ṭsuṭṭu-dala. n. (p. 500) tagavu tagavu. [Tel. from తగు.] n. Justice, virtue, uprightness. ధర్మము, న్యాయము. Also, presents given to a daughter by her parents when she is married. A dispute జగడము. A lawsuit వ్యాజ్యెము. 'క తనుమాలు ధర్మమేలా తనగురు తెరుగంగలేనితనువదియేలా తనబుద్ధిగానిదేలా తనతనకేగాకయున్న తగవియేలా. The best sort is called చిరువేరుతొగరు; the next sort is మారుబేరము తొగరు; and the worst, మడ్డితొగరు.) A certain fragrant flower. adj. Red. ఎర్రని. తొగరుమల్లి togaru-malli n. A sort of crystal. తొగరు ముక్కుపులుగు the scarlet beaked bird, i.e., a parrot. తొగరుచెట్టు togaru-cheṭṭu. n. A tree from which a red dye is made. (p. 662) nivītamu nivītamu. [Skt.] n. A veil, a mantle, a wrapper. కప్పుకొనబడినది, కప్పుకొనేబట్ట. The Brahminical thread, so called when worn round the neck as a necklace, at certain religious rites. పేరు వలె వేసుకొన్న ౛ందెము. రుమాలుగుడ్డను మెడను నివీతముగా వేలాడగట్టి అందులో నొప్పిగానుండే చేతిని ఉంచుకొన్నాడు he has slung his arm in a handkerchief.

(p. 673) nūlu nūlu. [Tel.] n. Cotton thread. నూలు తాడు a cotton rope, a measuring line. వాడు సన్ననూలు వడుకుచున్నాడు that man is a mere thread paper. నూలునిచ్చెన a rope ladder. 'అంపకోలనూలినాజ్ఞచెల్లు నట్టి సార్వభౌముడైన.' A. iv. 251. నూలిగరసు nūli-garasu. n. A bald head, బట్టతల. నూలుకొను or నూల్కొను nūlu-konu. v. n. To own, ఒప్పుకొను. To be fixed, కుదురుకొను. A prefix (like ground, or dwarf,) applied to certain plants, as నేలపేము, dwarf rattan, నేలపొన్న dwarf cassia. నేలగలుపు nēla-galupu. v. a. Lit. To mix with the earth.
