(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 270) kādu kādu. [Tel. from అగు.] v. It is not (so). It is not possible. It is out of the question. It is opposed to అవును, i.e., yes, అది మంచిదికాదు it is not good. అవునా కాదా yes or no? ఈ యెండచేత పైరుకాదు the crop won't come forward on account of the heat. వారిని పిలిస్తే గాని కాదన్నాడు he said nothing could be done unless they were invited. వానికి నాకు కాదు he and I do not agree. ఇది ఒక రాజ్యముకాదు this is a wretched place. కాదె kāde. (కాదు+ఎ.) Is it not so? కాదా.

(p. 503) taṭṭu taṭṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To occur or happen, to break out. కలుగు. నాకు సంశయముతట్టినది a doubt occurred to me. అది నామనసుకు తట్టలేదు it did not occur to my mind. అది నాకు నిజమని తట్టలేదు it does not strike me as true. v. a. To strike, beat, knock, pat, clap, slap. చరచు. To touch. ముట్టు. To do away with. remove, or dispel (as darkness.) కత్తిదెబ్బ కేడెముతో తట్టినాడు he averted the blow. తట్టివేయు to remove. సరితట్టు to compare with the original, to fill up what was wanting. నీళ్లు ఎగదట్టినవి the water rose to the brink, ఆ ఓడ గట్టుతట్టినది the ship ran ashore. తట్టుపునుగు carefully selected musk. n. A side, direction. పార్శ్వము. మీదితట్టు the top: the upper side. కింది తట్టు the under side: the bottom. A bank or shore దరి. A swelling, an inflammation. Chicken pox తట్టమ్మ. రాజ్యము వానితట్టు చేసినాడు they delivered the kingdom to him. అందరమొకతట్టు దిగితిమి we all went over to one side. ఆ పని తట్టుపడినది that work is laid aside. the ship got aground. తట్టుతీయు to flute wood, or make a groove. వానికి తట్టుపోసినది he has got the chicken pox. తట్టుకొను taṭṭu-konu. v. n. To go along. దొరికినమట్టుకు తట్టుకొని పోయెను he ran off with whatever he could get. To pause, delay, take time, hesitate. తట్టుపడు to suffer బాధపడు. తట్లాట taṭlāṭa. n. A squabble.

(p. 505) tatsamamu tatsamamu. [Skt. తత్+సమము.] adj. Lit: Equivalent to that. A term in Telugu etymology used to denote words borrowed from Sanskrit, but with the termination altered, as రాజ్యము rājyamu for రాజ్యం rājyam. See on తద్భవము.

A kingdom, రాజ్యము. అతనికి ప్రతాప సింహుడనే పట్టము నిచ్చినారు they gave him the title of Pratāpa Simha. ఆ పట్టాధికారి చనిపోయినాడు the head of the state died. అతనికి పట్టముకట్టిరి they crowned him. పట్టపుదేవి a queen. పట్టపు ఏనుగు or పట్టపుటేనుగు a royal elephant, a state elephant. రాజెక్కు ఏనుగు, భద్రగజము. పట్టపుకత్తి a state sword. పట్టమేలుట to reign. పట్టాభిషేకము paṭṭ-ābhishēkamu. n. Coronation, installation. పట్టాభిషిక్తుడు he who is crowned. పట్టాభిషేకము చేయు to crown one king. పట్టభద్రుడు paṭṭa-bhadruḍu. n. A chief, leader.

(p. 747) pālemu, pāḷemu or పాళియము pālemu. [Tel.] n. Watching or guarding. కావలి. A town ruled by a Poligar or petty baron, పాళెగాని ఊరు. A hamlet, a small village, పల్లె, చిన్నగ్రామము. An army, a force, troops, దండు. A camping ground, దండువిడియుచోటు. Encamping, halting. A barony or county under a petty chief. పాలెమున్నవారు soldiers in garrison. Kālahas. iii. 71. పాలెగాడు or పాళెగాడు pāḷe-gāḍu. n. A feudal retainer, a petty chieftain called a Poligar. పాళెపట్టు pāḷe-paṭṭu. n. Feudal tenure in fee. Villages held by petty chiefs free of assessment. పాళెముపట్టు pāḷemu-paṭṭu. n. An encampment. దండువిడిసినస్థలము. A polygar's estate, పాళెగాని రాజ్యము.

(p. 748) pāvanamu pāvanamu. [Skt.] adj. Pure, clean, purifying, holy. పవిత్రము. నేడు సుదినము నా జన్మము పావనమాయెను this happy day blots out all my sins: (a common phrase of joy.) పరముకన్ననేమి పావనమాసోమ్ము is wealth any object in comparison with heaven? పరమపావనీ O most holy One! పావనముచేయు to purify. ఆయన ఈ రాజ్యమును పావనముచేసెను he reformed this realm. n. Penance, purification. ప్రాయశ్చిత్తము. Water. జలము. A vow, వ్రతము. 'పావనశయవారిజాతముల భవ్యగణార్చలొనర్చు నిత్యమున్.' Chenn. v. 264. పావనశయమనగా, జలాశయము. పావని pāvani. [from పవనము, wind.] n.
