(p. 3) aṅkuśamu ankuṣamu, [Skt.] n. An elephant goad, an elephant driver's hook. Also, a check, a bar, a poser, a ruling case or argument. అంకుశమున నిలిపినాడు he made them stop short. ఇది జ్వరాంకుశము this is a specific against fever, that which arrests the disease. కవిగజాంకుశము (title of a book) a code to guide the poets. అంకుశమునకురాని ungovernable, head-strong, untractable, indocile.

(p. 4) aṅke anke. [Tel.] n. A numerical figure అంకము. Opportunity, time. One pack, half a bullock load. A form of అణక. Bringing the yoke under the neck, as by a troublesome bullock. ఎద్దులు అంకె వేసికొన్నవి the bullocks turned restive, bringing the yoke under the neck. A command, authority, control, restraint, check. అంకెగొను v. i. To cover oneself with కప్పుకొను. అంకెచేయు v. i. To obstruct అడ్డగించు.అంకెకురాని,(భాస్క.2.) ungovernable. అంకెకురావు, అనగా అక్కరకురావు they will not be of any use. అంకెవేసికొను or అణకవేసికొను v. n. To be restive, as a bullock in the yoke. ఎద్దయకాడికెదురు తిరుగుట. నాడు తేపతేపకు అంకెవేసికొనును. he turns restive every now and then.

(p. 30) aṭa ata. [Tel.] or అంట (contraction of అంటున్నారు they say) It is said, they say. వాడు వచ్చెనట they say he is come. రావటే for రావటవే, i.e., రానంటావే యేమే what, will you not come? కోపమటే, i.e., కోపమాయేమే what, are you angry? బాలుడటేనాడు what! do you call him a child? అటరా is a contraction for అంటావురా dost thou say so?

(p. 60) anvayamu anvayamu. [Skt.] n. Race, lineage. In grammar, the government of words in a sentence. Syntax. వంశము. పదముల యొక్క పరస్పరాకాంక్షాయోగ్యత, ఇమిడిక. ఈ. శ్లోకమునకు అన్వయము తెలియలేదు I do not perceive the syntax of this verse. దురాన్వయము a far-fetched allusion. కౌరవాన్వయుడు one of the Kuru race. అన్వయజ్ఞుడు a genealogist. అన్వయవ్యాప్తి (in Logic,) an affirmative argument అన్వయించు v. a. To arrange words in their natural order, explain the syntax. పదముల సంబంధమును చెప్పు, పొందికపరుచు.

(p. 66) aprayōjakamu a-prayōjakamu. [Skt.] adj. Unserviceable, fruitless, useless. ఉపయోగము కాని, పనికిరాని. అప్రయోజనము n. A useless man. పనికిమాలినవాడు.

(p. 66) aprāptavyavahāruḍu a-prāpta-vyavahā-ruḍu. [Skt.] n. A minor in law; one who is under age. వ్యవహారదశరానివాడు.

(p. 77) ara ara. [Tel.] n. A room or chamber. గది. అరలపెట్టె a box with partitions. Hesitation, doubt. జంకు. 'నాయంతవానిగా నగరి లోపలికి, నరలేకరానిచ్చి నందుకు మేలు.' Sar. D. 502.

(p. 82) arupu or అరపు arupu. [Tel.] v. n. To remain or be left, to be saved, to be within one's power. దక్కు. అరపరాని unwiedly, not handy. అరపరానికడి a morsel too big to swallow. వాడు అరపరానికడిగానున్నాడు, అనగా, వాడు గుమ్మడికాయంత ముత్యముగానున్నాడు he is unwieldy.

(p. 94) avadhyamu a-vadhyamu. [Skt. వధ్ = to kill] adj. Not meriting death, innocent. చంపరాని, చంపదగని. అనధ్యుడు n. One who is not deserving of death. చంపననర్హుడు.

(p. 96) avācyamu a-vāchyamu. [Skt.] adj. Un-utterable, not fit to be uttered, obscene. అనరాని, ఆడరాని, ఉచ్చరింపగూడని, బండైన, బూతు అయిన.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 119) āyattamu , or ఆయిత్తు āyattamu. [Tel.] n. Convenience, readiness. ఆయిత్తు adj. Ready, prepared, convenient. నాకు రానా యిత్తుకాదు I cannot come.

(p. 123) ārṣamu ārsḥạmu. [Skt. from ఋషి] adj. Relating to, belonging to or derived from a Rishi. ఋషిసంబంధమైన. Spiritual, prophetical; inspired or revealed by means of a Rishi. Archaic. పురాతనము. n. A form of marriage in which a girl is freely given away in accordance with the Sastras, her parents receiving a cow and an ox in return. ధర్మార్థము వరునినుండి ఆవును ఎద్దును పుచ్చుకొని కన్యనిచ్చి శాస్త్రానుసారముగా చేయు పెండ్లి.

(p. 136) iddaru iddaru. [Tel. ఇరు+వారు adj. or pron. Two persons, both persons. A negative verb requires this is to be translated neither: as ఇద్దరినిన్ని రానియ్యవద్దు let neither of them come in.

(p. 139) irusu irusu. [tel.] n. An axle. The cross beam in the middle of a picota. ఏతపుమ్రాని నడుమనుండు అడ్డుకొయ్య.
