(p. 2) aṅkamu ankamu. [Tel. Drav. word borrowed by Skt. √ అన్్క్ = to move in a curve.] n. A ma spot, badge. బిరుదాంకము = బిరుదు గురుతు. 'అంకపురాజింక.' వసు. ii. 11. The haunch or part above the hip. A chapter or section. An act in a play. Proximity. A numerical figure, a cipher. A military show, a sham fight. వింతపోరు, చిత్రయుద్ధము. 'అంకగతుడైన దైత్యుని నాగ్రహమున.' భాగ. A fault, a sin, Objection, cavil ఆక్షేపము. 'అంకముసేయవచ్చునలయయ్యలమున్నుగ బ్రస్తుతించెదన్.' మైరా. i. అంకతలము or అంకపీఠి the lap, the part on which an infant sits, as on the lap. 'నయనీయంకతలంబునన్నిదుర నూనంజేయగా వేడెదన్.' విక్ర iii. 94. అంకుడు n. He who is marked or distinguished గురుతుగలవాడు. మృగాంకుడు the moon.

(p. 12) antastu antastu. [Tel.] n. A secret place a hiding place, a corner. A square compartment. తొట్టికట్టు A storey, or range, one above another, as the decks of a ship. రెండు అంతస్తుల యిల్లు a two storeyed house. 'ఎరుగవలసిన యంతస్తులెల్లజూచె.' పర.4.అ. 'అంతఃపురమువాసి యల్లననివలి యంతస్తునకు వచ్చునంతటిలోన.' విష్ణు.ఉ. 4. అ.

(p. 31) aṭamaṭa or అటమటము aṭamata. [Tel.] n. Trickery, guile, fraud. Sorrow, untruthfulness. 'అటమట బీరగాయ సుద్దులాడెదవౌరా.' T. iii. 102. 'అటమటమ్మున విద్యగొనుటయుంగాక గుటగుటలు గరువుతో నాయెనని.' Swa. v. 19 అటమటకాడు. అటమటీడు a cheat. అటమటించు aṭamaṭinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. and v. n. To deceive, cajole, obtain by fraud. To be troubled మాయచేసి అపహరించు. 'తమ్ముడవని నిన్నేగతి నమ్మంగా వచ్చునిట్లు నాకొసగకర త్నమ్మటమటించుకొంటివి.' Vish. vi. 307.

(p. 79) aravamu aravamu. [prob. Skt. అ+రవము without sound, i.e., having no aspirated. See Caldwell] n. Tamil ద్రావిడము. అరవలు Tamilians, Tamil people. నీకు అరవము వచ్చునా do you know Tamil?

(p. 111) āṭu āṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To suffice: to last, to be enough దాన్ని పోడిమిగా వాడితే యింకా నెల దినములకు ఆటివచ్చును with caution it may suffice for a month. అది ఆటదు or ఆటి రాదు it is not enough. కట్టెలు ఒక మాటుగా తీసికొంటే ఆటివస్తుంది, చిల్లరచిల్లరగా తీసికొంటే ఆటిరావు if you buy your firewood in the lump it will last; if you buy only a little at a time it will not. ఆటు n. Striking. కొట్టుట. Shooting, or rheumatic pain: పోటు (M. VIII. i. 218:) throbbing. నాకు ఆటుపోటుగానున్నది I am in great pain. ఆ పుంటిలో ఆట్లుపోట్లు ఎత్తినవి the boil throbbed much.

(p. 206) okaṭi okaṭi. [Tel.] n. and adj. One. ఇందువల్ల ఒకటి వచ్చును from this one thing may result. ఇందులో ఒకటిన్ని తక్కువ లేదు there is not a single thing wanting. ఎవ్వరియింట్లోనైనా ఒకటే it is no matter in whose house (he) is. నేను చెప్పినది ఒకటి వాడు చేసినది ఒకటి I told him one thing and he did another. ఒకటి వెనుక ఒకటి one after another. దోవకు రెండు పక్కలను అడవి ఒకటే గాని దారి మంచిదే there is nothing but jungle on both sides, but the way is good. ఒకటిగా okaṭi-gā. adv. Together, unitedly, unanimously, conjointly. ఒకటిచేయు okaṭi-chēyu. v. a. To make one, unite, mix. ఒకటియగు okaṭi-y-agu. v. n. To be combined. ఒకట okaṭa. On or in one. At one time ఏకకాలమునందు. ఒకటొకటిగా okaṭ-okaṭi-gā. adv. Separately, one by one, one after another. ఒకటో okaṭō. adj. First. ఒకటోసాక్షి the first witness.

(p. 206) oko or ఒకో oko. [Tel.] interj. Oh! alas! Perhaps. వాడు వచ్చునొకో will he come?

(p. 215) oḷle vāṭu olle-vāṭu. [Tel.] n. A scarf, the upper garment gracefully arranged round the neck. The wearing of an upper cloth. పై బట్టను కుచ్చెళ్లుపెట్టి మెడచుట్టి వచ్చునట్లుగా భుజములమీద వేసికొనుట.

(p. 217) ōza ōza. [Tel.] n. Order క్రమము. Way, manner విధము. Nature స్వభావము. A command ఆజ్ఞ. Vigor, zeal, joy ఉత్సాహము, ఎచ్చరిక. Fear భయము. Thought, idea, intent. Counsel, wisdom, good sense యోచన. In arithmetic, an uneven or odd number. A row, or range. వరుస. A teacher ఉపాధ్యాయుడు. Virāṭa. 93. Like a lion bursting forth in rage. 'ఓ౛గాదిట్లాడనోనీకు' L. vii. 7. 'ఒడలి గుణమువేర యో౛వేర' Vēmana. ఓ౛పడు ōza-paḍu. v. i. To be settled, to be set right క్రమపడు. ఓ౛బంతి or ఓ౛్జబంతి ōzabanti. n. The way shown by the teacher ఉపాధ్యాయుడు చూసిన పద్ధతి. A copy set by him మేలుబంతి.

(p. 264) kā or గా kā. the adverbial sign కా. Is it not so, to be sure కదా, కాదా. వాడున్నాడుకా he is there, I suppose. వాడు వ్రాసినాడుకా you see he wrote it. ఆ యెడ్లు అతనివి కావచ్చును perhaps the cattle are his. నగదుగా ఇచ్చినారు they paid it in silver. See గా, and అగు. కాగానే as soon as it is done.

(p. 416) cinna chinna. [Tel.] adj. Small, little, short, young, mean, trifling, insignificant, narrow: disgraceful. ముఖము చిన్నచేసుకొను to be ashamed, to be downcast or sorrowful. Junior, Younger, smaller. చిన్నచూపు humiliation, scorn. దేవుడు చిన్నచూపుచూస్తే యెవరేమి చేయవచ్చును when God withdraws his favour what can man do? చిన్న ఆకురాయి chinna-ākurāyi. n. The Blackheaded Cuckoo-Shrike, Campophaga sykesi. (F.B.I.) చిన్నకారు chinna-kāru. n. Childhood, youth. చిన్నకారుపిల్లలు young children. చిన్నతనము chinna-tanamu. n. Infancy: littleness, smallness. Disgrace, dishonor. ఇందువల్ల కులమునకంతా చిన్నతనము వచ్చినది this is a disgrace to the whole caste. చిన్నది chinnadi. n. A little one. A girl, a lass. ఈ చిన్నది అతనిభార్య this girl is his wife. పెద్ద చిన్నది the eldest daughter; or, a grown girl.

(p. 515) tala tala [Tel.] n. The head. శిరస్సు. The hair on the head. తలవెండ్రుకలు. The top కొన. The front ముందుభాగము. Height ఎత్తు. Whole మొత్తము. An occasion, a time సమయము, ఎడ. An attempt, endeavour పూనిక. A field, place రంగము. A side పక్షము. Telugu books were usually written on palm-leaves connected by a cord running through: and to tear out a leaf or rescind a bond, the top is torn. Hence తలచించిన denotes Rescinded. తలతో నడిచి వస్తున్నాను I will come even though I walk on my head. తలకొవ్విన tala-kovvina. adj. Fat-headed, proud, silly. ఇంతపనిచేస్తే వారిలో ఎట్లు తలయెత్తవచ్చును if he did this how could he shew his face among them? తలతో చెల్లించెను he paid for it with his head, it cost him his life. తలకుఎక్కేపని a perilous undertaking. తలకు ఎక్కినది it got into his head, he is intoxicated. తలకొట్టివేయు to decapitate or behead. తల (for తలను) మోయు to carry on the head. శిరసావహించు. BD. v. 309. ఒకతల on the one hand. తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu. n. The crest, tire, top, head-dress. పోగా. Chief ముఖ్యము. The head or leader. (p. 633) nammu nammu. [Tel.] v. a. & n. To believe or give credit to. To trust or confide in. To rely on, to have faith in. విశ్వసించు. To suppose, imagine. నమ్మనగు it is believable, విశ్వసింపవచ్చును. నమ్మకము, నమ్మిక or నమ్మిగ nammakamu. n. Trust, reliance, assurance, confidence, belief, faith, dependence. నమ్మకముగా confidently, positively, trustworthily. నమ్మకమైన nammakam-ai-na. adj. Trustworthy, faithful. నమ్మకస్థుడు nammaka-sthuḍu. n. A trustworthy or faithful man, a respectable man. నమ్మిక మాటలు persuasive words: assurance, beguiling. నమ్మినవాణ్ని చెరపరాదు you should not injure him who confides in you. నమ్మించు namminṭsu. v. a. To cause to believe or trust. To assure, cheat, promise, persuade. నమ్మించి గొంతుకోసినాడు lit: he made them believe in him and cut their throat, i.e., he ruined them.

(p. 698) paṭṭu paṭṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To suffice, to last. చెల్లు. To last a long time, హుకాలము చెల్లు. To begin, ప్రారంభించు. To happen, కలుగు. కలుగు. To cost. To fit or suit. Lit: To take the hand; to take to wife, to marry. చెయ్యిపట్టు to seize the hand, to ravish a female. దారమునుపట్టు, to twist a cord, నేను. గొడుగుపట్టు to hold an umbrella. కాలుపట్టు to geld. కాళ్లుపట్టు to massage or rub the legs. పగపట్టు to conceive hatred. శంఖముపట్టు to blow a conch. కత్తి సానపట్టు to set or grind a knife or razor. కంపుపట్టు to stink. చుట్టపట్టు to smoke a cigar or cheroot. పొగపట్టు to apply smoke. ఆ బొక్కలో నా చెయ్యి పట్టదు my hand will not go into the hole. తలా ఒకదారి పట్టినారు each of them went by a separate road. ఇంకా కోతపట్టలేదు the reaping has not yet been put in hand. ఆ వ్యాజ్యమును పట్టలేదు they did not admit the lawsuit. దానిగోళ్లకు గోరింటపట్టదు the colouring does not adhere to her nails. ఆ మందు ఈ రోగాన్ని పట్టలేదు the medicine has not affected this sickness. ఆ విద్యను బాగా పట్టి ఉన్నాడు he has taken well to that branch of study. గింజపట్టే సమయము the time when the grain is forming in the ear. ఇమదులో ఎవరికేమి పట్టినది who has any thing to do with this? నాలుగుదినములు పట్టును it will take four days. మనిషిపట్టేమాత్రము only large enough to admit a man. అయిదురూపాయీలు పట్టును it will cost five rupees. ముడు గజాలు పట్టును it will take three yards. మన్నెముపట్టి ఉన్నారు they betook themselves to the highlands. ఆనవాలుపట్టు or గురుతుపట్టు ānavālu-paṭṭu v. a. To identify, recognise, know again, verify. పట్టి పట్టి మాట్లాటెను he spoke in a broken manner. ఎవరినిపట్టితే వారు చెప్పుదురు ask whom you will, and they will tell you. మీరు పట్టిమాట్లాడితే ఆ పని అనుకూలమవును if you speak to the point the matter will be settled. అది నా బుద్ధికి పట్టలేదు I do not take (or comprehend) the meaning. పట్టిచెప్పితే ఆ పిల్లవానికి చదువు బాగావచ్చును if you teach him sedulously the boy will learn well. వాడు దానిని పట్టుకొని పీకులాడుచున్నాడు he is troubling himself about it. వాడు పట్టినదెల్లా బంగారమవుచు వచ్చినది whatever he touched turned to gold. ఆ కోటను పట్టుకొన్నారు they took the fort. ఆ దొంగను పట్టుకొన్నారు they apprehended the thief. నా చెయ్యి పట్టుకొన్నాడు he laid hold of my hand, or, he seized my hand. ఆ వాడుకను పట్టుకొన్నాడు he began the practice. ఒక నెల జీతము పట్టుకొన్నాడు he stopped one month's wages. చెప్పగానే పట్టుకొన్నాడు he understood me the moment I spoke. నడుము పట్టుకొన్నది my loins are strained. [పట్టు is also added to a great number of nouns, to give them a verbal signification and in such cases it takes its meaning from the noun to which it is affixed; thus:] తప్పుపట్టు to rust. ఇలుకుపట్టు to be sprained. అక్కరపట్టు to be necessary, to be required or to take interest in. కొవ్వుపట్టు to become fat. బూజుపట్టు to grow mouldy, దోవపట్టు to take a road. సత్తువపట్టు to be recovered, as strength. పట్లుపట్టు to be seized with cramp, &c. వాడు లంచము పట్టుచున్నాడు he takes bribes. వాడికి వెర్రిపట్టినది he has gone mad. నాకు చలిపట్టుచున్నది I feel cold. వాని గుణములు నీకు పట్టుపడినవి you have contracted his habits. వానపట్టినప్పుడు when rain came on. అట్లు చేయడానకు నీకేమిపట్టినది what business had you to do this? what made you do this? గడ్డిపట్టినబీళ్లు land covered with grass. వానిమీద తప్పుపట్టినారు they found fault with him. ఆ మందు నోరుపట్టినది the medicine made his mouth swell. వానికి ౛లుబు పట్టినది he has caught cold. నాకు కూరుకు పట్టినది I became drowsy. ఆ దూడ యింకా గడ్డి పట్ట లేదు the calf has not yet taken to grass. పట్టించు paṭṭinṭsu. [causal of పట్టు.] v. a. To cause to hold. To apply oil or ointment, &c. To make one begin. ఆ చిన్నవాడికి అమరము పట్టించినారు they have made him begin (reading) the Amaram. రేపు నీపని పట్టిస్తాను or నీతాళముపట్టిస్తాను I will settle your business to-morrow, i.e., I will punish you. ఆ పెట్టెను వానిచేతి పట్టించుకొనిరా make him bring the box with you. పట్టింపు paṭṭimpu. n. Application. Concern. పిల్లకాయలచేత ఒక పుస్తకము ఆరంభించడము, శ్రద్ధ, అక్కర, పాటింపు. అమరము పట్టింపు అయిన మూడు నెలలకు three months after setting to work on the Amaram. ఆరాధ్యులకు కర్మమందు పట్టింపులేదు the Aradhyas pay no attention to rites. 'లేనిపట్టింపులెల్లను పూనిచాన.' Ila. iii. 29. పట్టు paṭṭu. n. Holding, a hold. గ్రహణము, పట్టుకొనుట. A handful. Pertinacity, resolution, hold, strength, grip, grasp, seizing. గ్రహణము. An external application to a swelling to allay pain, &c. పూత. Ground, for a proceeding, కారణము. A prop; support, favor; a party or side, ఆధారము. A part of scene in a play, స్థానము, విషయము. విరహపుపట్టు an amorous scene,. యుద్ధపుపుట్టు a warlike scene. A feat in wrestling. అది తలకు పట్టు పెట్టుకొని పండుకొన్నది she put a plaster on her temples and went to bed. ఈ వ్యాజ్యములో పట్టులేదు there is no proper plea in this suit. ఒకని పట్టుగా మాట్లాడుట to speak on a man's behalf. ఒక పట్టుగానుండు to inhit pertinaciously. ఉనికిపట్టు a place, a house, an abode. వాడు పట్టినపట్టు వదలడు he will not relinquish his purpose. వాణ్ని పట్టిన పట్టున తీసుకొనివచ్చిరి they brought him as he was. పట్టుస్నానము bathing at the commencement of an eclipse, as opposed to విడుపుస్నానము bathing at its termination. ఆయన పట్టుబిడుపు తెలిసినవాడు he knows where to be lenient and where to be severe. కూతపట్టునేల as far as a cry may be heard. వారికి కర్మములో పట్టులేదు they do not lay much stress upon ceremonies. వాడు ఎంతమాత్రము పట్టు ఇవ్వకుండా మాట్లాడుచున్నాడు he speaks without giving them any handle. చాలా మంది ఆయనపట్టు అయిరి many followed him, or joined his side. పట్టున (with న the sign of the ablative) at, by, close to. కోరడి పట్టు న along the hedge. గాడీపట్టున at the manager. ఈ పట్టున at present, పట్టు feats in wrestling. కాడు జెట్టిపట్లుపట్టగలడు he is able to wrestle. ఆ చుట్టుపట్ల in the adjacent places, in the neighbourhood. చుట్టుపట్ల వాండ్లు neighbours. పట్టు paṭṭu. n.
