(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 1) a a. 7. [Tel.] A suffix meaning 'By oneself without the help of another'. సర్వమును నీవ యెరుగుదువు. Or, without a rival, e. g., 'శత్రుక్షయంబు చేసి యెవ్వరికి నీక తామ యేలు చుండెమనియెడి మోహంబున.' భాగ. xii 18.

(p. 1) a a. 6. [Tel.] A suffix meaning 'Only this and no other.' 'దీనిం దెనుగున పాటించి రచింప నీన ప్రౌఢు డవరయన్.' రాఘ. i. 12.

(p. 2) aṅkapoṅkamulu or అంకపొంకాలు anka-ponkamulu [Tel.] n. Fierceness, fury, violence. Enmity, opposition. విరోధము బిడ్డకు జ్వరము అంకపొంకములుగా వచ్చినది the child was attacked with a violent fever. [Other forms are అంకాపొంకములు and అంకాపొంకాలు.]

(p. 3) aṅkuśamu ankuṣamu, [Skt.] n. An elephant goad, an elephant driver's hook. Also, a check, a bar, a poser, a ruling case or argument. అంకుశమున నిలిపినాడు he made them stop short. ఇది జ్వరాంకుశము this is a specific against fever, that which arrests the disease. కవిగజాంకుశము (title of a book) a code to guide the poets. అంకుశమునకురాని ungovernable, head-strong, untractable, indocile.

(p. 6) aṅghri anghṛi. [Skt.] n. The foot. పాదము. అంఘ్రవము n. A tree. చెట్టు. అంఘ్రవర్ణిక n. A plant. (Hedysarum lagopodoides.) కోలపొన్న. ముయ్యాకుపొన్న.

(p. 11) antaruvu antaruvu. [Skt.] n. Interval Difference తారతమ్యము. A secret place మరుగుచోటు. 'పెద్దపిన్నయంతరువు లెరింగి' విజ. 1. అ. క' అరుగుసెడ నంతరిపురమున నరవిరిపాన్పుపయి నొరిగి యావల ధరణీ, శ్వరుడను నీవలనొకయం, తరుపున జిత్రాంగి చెలులు దానుండంగన్.' సా. 3. అ.

(p. 11) antargatamu antargatamu. [Skt.] adj. Intermediate, internal, inner, hidden, లోపలి, లోని, మరువబడిన. అంతర్గతజ్వరము internal fever, slow fever.

(p. 12) antaḷayya antaṣṣatruvu. [Skt.] n. Inward foe. 'ఇంద్రియోత్కరంబు గెలిచి, అంత శ్శత్రుకులమైన కామాదివర్గంబు.' M. XIII. 3. 277.

(p. 14) andāka andāka. [Tel. from అంత+దనుక.] adv. Thus far, so far, so long, till then అదివరకు.

(p. 17) aṃśamu amṣamu. [Skt] n. A share, part, portion, a fraction; the denominator of one; a degree of latitude or longitude (Geog.); a subject భాగము, విషయము, దేవుని యంశమున పుట్టినవాడు he who is born from a portion of the deity, he who is of divine origin; అంశపురుషుడు a fortunate man, a man of talent or parts. వర్ణనాంశము a descriptive part or passage in a poem. ఈ అంశము నాకు తెలుసును I am acquainted with this subject. ఈ అంశములో in this respect. వాడు అన్ని అంశములు తెలిసినవాడు he knows every thing. అంశచక్రము a table consulted by astrologers in casting nativities, an astrological diagram for ascertaining the degree of the sun in any sign. దశాంసము the tenth part; అంశసవరణ = reduction of fractions; అంశనీయము or అంశ్యము = that which is divisible.

(p. 22) akhaṇḍamu a-khaṇḍamu. [Skt.] adj. Whole, entire; abounding; imperishable. సకలమైన, విస్తారమైన. అఖండానందము eternal bliss. అఖండైశ్వర్యము abounding wealth. అఖండకావేరి the main stream of the Cavery. అఖండము n. A permanent lamp in a temple. నిరంతరము మండే దీపము. అఖండిత adj. Unbroken, undivided. Untorn, undisturbed, uninterrupted, unrefuted, continous, imperishable. ఖండింపబడని, అనశ్వరమైన, అఖండతలక్ష్మి imperishable riches.
