(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 203) aitē aitē. [Tel. wrongly used for అయితే the conditional aorist of అగు] conj. If; should it be so, suppose it were so. But, As for, indeed: as నాకైతే తెలియదు I for my part do not know, lit. to me indeed it is unknown. చేను అయితే యిచ్చెనుగాని యిల్లు ఇయ్యలేదు he gave the field indeed but not the house. వాడయితే రాలేదు as for him, he did not come. పూర్వమయితే విన్నాను I heard so indeed formerly. వాడయితే తప్పు చేసినాడు కాని so far as he is concerned he is wrong.

(p. 657) nir nir. A Sanskrit particle prefixed in words of that language and implying negation, privation, &c. This prefix varies in accordance with the rules of Sanskrit sandhi. In some cases it becomes నిష్ as నిష్ఫలమైన fruitless. When attached to a word which begins with S, it becomes నిస్, as నిస్సందేహముగా doubtlessly. When it is followed by a vowel, it remains unaltered as నిరాటంకముగా unchecked. The compounds in which this prefix is used are here put together. నిరంకుశము nir-ankuṣamu. adj. An elder mother, i.e., mother's elder sister or a father's elder brother's wife. పెద్దమ్మ is also the name of జ్యేష్ఠాదేవి a goddess who is the personification of misfortune, and is described as the elder sister of శ్రీ or Fortune. The word is also used to mean a wretched creature, a blockhead. వాణ్ని పెద్దమ్మపట్టుకొన్నది he is out of luck. వాణ్ని పెద్దమ్మ విడిచినది his luck has taken a turn. ఇది బుద్ధిమంతురాలు వాడు వట్టిపెద్దమ్మ she is a sensible woman, but he is a mere blockhead. పెద్దమ్మనేల a wretched bit of land. పెద్దమ్మతనము pedd-amma-tanamu. n.
