(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 835) pramadamu pra-madamu. [Skt.] n. Joy , pleasure, delight. ఆనందము, సంతోషము. ప్రమదవనము or ప్రమదావనము pramada-vanamu. n. A ladies'pleasure-ground, or park. అంతఃపురస్త్రీలు విహరింపదగిన ఉద్యానవనము. ప్రమద pra-mada. n. A wanton girl, an attractive woman; a maid, damsel, lady, అతికామవతి, అతిగర్వవతి, స్త్రీ.

(p. 1001) muḍugu muḍugu. [Tel.] v. n. To be drawn in, as one's limbs, to shrink, shrivel, or close, ముకుళించు. To be diminished, తగ్గు, సంకోచించు. To be unable to act, చేష్టలుడుగు. ముడుగుతామర muḍugutāmara. n. The plant called Hibiscus mutabilis, పొత్తితామర, నమస్కారి. See ముచ్చముడుగు. ముడుచు muḍuṭsu. v. a. To cause to fold, ముడుగుజేయు. To tie into a knot, ముడివేయు, ముడిపెట్టు. To set flowers in the tresses. To bend the limbs. 'చక్ర స్త్రీలు మోముల్ ముడుంప.' (S. iii. 399.) the doves looked downcast. దానికి పూలుముడిచినదెవరు who set the flowers in her hair? ముడుచుకొను muḍuṭsu-konu. v. a. To contract as limbs. To wear flowers in one's hair. అది పూలుముడుచుకొన్నది she wore flowers in her hair. మూతిముడుచుకొని ఉన్నది her features are contracted, pensive or downcast. ముడత or ముడుత muḍata. n. A wrinkle, crumpling, knot in spinning or twisting. వళి, మడత. ముడత తెవులు a transient blight in corn that goes off again. ముడుపు or ముడ్పు muḍupu. n. A rouleau, bag or purse. మల్లె, భూషణాదులమూట, ధనపుమూట, ధనము. పూలముడుపు a ceremony of setting flowers in the head dress of a pregnant woman. వెంకటేస్వరులముడుపు money or jewels promised by a vow to the god Venkaṭesa. ముడుపు కట్టుకొను to vow money or jewels to a god. దివాణెపుముడుపు money payable into the Government treasury. 'అద్దములోనదోచు ముడుపు.' (Ahal. iii. 48.) a purse reflected in the mirror. ముడుపరి muḍup-ari. n. One who vows to offer some money to a god. ముడుపుపుట్టినవాడు.

(p. 1040) mora mora. [Tel.] n. A cry, scream lamentation, complaint, plaint. A declaration, statement. అత్తనాదము. Also, another form of మోర. (q. v.) మొరపెట్టు mora-peṭṭu. v. n. To scream, cry, yell, lament, wail, cry aloud, complain. అర్తధ్వనిచేయు, అరుచు, పడిన అన్యాయమునుగూర్చి చెప్పు. మొరపెట్టుకొను to howl, make a complaint, complain, తనకు గలిగిన అన్యాయమును గూర్చి చెప్పుకొను. స్త్రీలకు స్వాతంత్య్రములేదని శాస్త్రములు మొరపెట్టుచుండగా while the Sastras declare that women have no independence.

(p. 1094) lampaṭa or లంపటము lampaṭa. [Tel.] n. Pain, trouble, weariness, బాధ, తొందర, ఆయాసము. Danger, ఆపద. 'సూర్యదీప్తివలన శోషిల్లుచున్న పద్మాకరంబులెల్లనతిశయిల్లె. పెక్కులంపటములజిక్కిమమత్వముల్ మానకున్న జనులమనసులట్ల.' Vish. vii. 228. లంపటపడు lampaṭa-paḍa. v. n. To take pains. శ్రమపడు. లంపటుడు lampaṭuḍu. n. One who loves, one who is given up to or eager for, అత్యాసక్తికలవాడు, మిక్కిలి ఆశగలవాడు. స్త్రీలంపటుడు a whoremonger, a libertine, a gallant. 'రాజ్యసుఖలంపటుడై.' URT. iii. 111. 'అటుగాక కర్మగతిలంపటుడనగుదునేని.' M. XII. i. 37.

(p. 1103) liṅgamu lingamu. [Skt.] n. A mark, sing, token, symptom, characteristic. చిహ్నము. An element, principle. The male organ of generation. The phallus, i.e., emblem symbolic of Siva. సాంభ్యోక్తప్రకృతి, శివమూర్తివిశేషము. Nature as an active power in creation. అబ్లింగము hydrogen, the watery element. పృధివీలింగము the earth. తేజోలింగము caloric. Gender, in grammar, as పుంలింగము the masculine gender. స్త్రీలింగము the feminine gender. నపుంసకలింగము the neuter gender. అనియతలింగము or త్రిలింగము common gender. బాణలింగము a cylindrical oblong pebble or crystal worshipped as the emblem of Siva. గురులింగము a father confessor. శివలింగము an image of Siva. జంగమలింగము a man of the Jangam sect. ప్రసాదలింగము what is dedicated to Siva. లింగశరీరము the subtile or atomic body, the active and causative principle in animated creatures, the quintessence or ethereal substance constituting the soul or spirit, మనోబుద్ధిదశేంద్రియ పంచప్రాణములగల సూక్ష్మదేహము. లింగకట్టుమాత్ర linga-kaṭṭu-mātra. n. A particular kind of pill made of factitious cinnabar. లింగాకారముగాచేసిన రసవస్తువులగుళిక. లింగకాయ linga-kāya. n. The solitaire or small case usually made of silver to keep the lingam or phallus in and worn on the breast, suspended by a cord round the neck. స౛్జకాయ. లింగడు lingaḍu. n. A name of the god Siva. జంగమయ్య, శివుడు. లింగదొండ linga-donḍa. n. A creeper with a red conical fruit. Bryonia laciniora. దొండలోభేదము. లింగధారి or లింగవంతుడు linga-dhāri. n. One who wears the lingam or phallus. లింగమును కట్టుకొనియుండువాడు. లింగపొట్ల linga-poṭla. n. A kind of snake gourd. లింగాకారవు విత్తులుగల ఒకదినుసు పొట్ల. సిధ్రకము. లింగబలిజలు linga-balijalu. n. Plu. People of the బలిజ caste, who wear the lingam in a case hung round their necks. లింగవంతులైన బలుజవాండ్రు. లింగవృత్తి. లింగవృత్తుడు or లింగి linga-vritti. n. A religious hypocrite, one who assumes the dress, &c., of an ascetic in order to get a livelihood. ధర్మధ్వజి, పొట్టపోసికొనుటకు జటలు రుద్రాక్షలు ధరించువాడు.

(p. 1105) lu lu. [Tel.] n. The sing of the plural in Telugu. It is probably a corruption of the Sanskrit word గురు. In the Ujjayani or Middle Indian dialect, as seen, according to Cunningham, in the Girnar, Rupenath and other inscriptions of Asoka, the word గురు (guru) first occurs in the form of గులు (gulu). Cf. గళ్ used in Tamil and గళు in Kanarese. కులలు as a plural ending occurs in a few words in Telugu, as కొలకులు. Vide Seshagiri Sastri's Notes on Telugu Grammar. Originally there was no sign of the plural in the Dravidian tongues. See Caldwell. The use of లు as a plural sign was finally extended to other than Masculine nouns, as తమ్ములు, స్త్రీలు, చెట్లు, &c.

(p. 1116) vaṅki vanki. [Tel. from వంగు.] n. An arrow. బాణము. A dagger, బాకు. A sort of hook, కొక్కి. 'తిమ్మితుపాకికెందలిరాకువంకి, కమ్మనివిల్లు చెంగల్వనేజయును, జాజిపూబాకుగొజ్జగిపెద్దకత్తి.' ND. i. 593. వంకిణి vankini. A certain musical instrument. వాద్యవిశేషము. A dagger. బాకు. 'బూరలును భేరీలు పోటు ధారలునుకాహళవంకిణీ కావికొమ్ములును శంఖ సమూహముల్ సన్నాయి౛ోళ్లు.' Pal. 257. వంకీ vankī. n. An armlet of a crooked shape, స్త్రీలు సందిటధరించే ఒక విధమైననగ. వంకె or వంకియ vanke. n. A kind of grain, సస్యవిశేషము. A wooden hook or peg in the wall. మంటిగోడకువేసిన చిలుక కొయ్య. పులిగోళ్లవంకెలు a certain kind of grain. తెల్లవంకెలు another kind of grain. H. iv. 159. వడ్లవంకెలు a fine species of rice.

(p. 1188) vilāsamu vi-lāsamu. [Tel.] n. label, direction, the superscription on a letter. పైనివ్రాసినపేరు, ౛ాబుమీద వ్రాసినచిరునామా, పైవిలాసము. [Skt.] n. Sport, dalliance; amorous blandishments, affection of coyness. స్త్రీలహావభేదము, లీల, క్రీడ. స్త్రీ పురుషుల శృంగారచేష్ట. కృష్ణవిలాసము the adventures of Krishna. విజయవిలాసము the tale of Arjuna. విలాసవతి or విలాసిని vilāsa-vati. n. A flirt, a coquette, a playful girl, స్తీ, వేడుకగలస్త్రీ. విలాసవంతుడు or విలాసి vilāsa-vantuḍu. n. A sportive person.

(p. 1225) vēḷākōḷamu vēḷā-kōḷamu. [Tel.] n. Intricacy. చిక్కు. Ridicule, derision, joking, పరిహాసము. వేళాకోళమునొందు to be caught in difficulties, చిక్కులబడు; to be ridiculed, పరిహసింపబడు. 'ఆలుంబిడ్డల కొరకై జాలింబడి ధనముగూర్చి చచ్చినదనుకన్ వేళాకోళము నొందుచు స్త్రీలోలుండైనవాడు చెడిపోపాలై.' Ramastava Raj. ii. 62. వేళాకోళపు vēḷā-kōḷapu. adj. Intricate, puzzling. చిక్కుగానుండే. 'క వేళాకోళపుదీగెలు, బేలలికలుగళాసములును బీరజడలుదా, దాలుచుటెట్లొకొమింటన్, లీలాహరి దోలనింతనేర్పరియయ్యున్.' KP. iii. 79. Ridiculing, joking, derisive, పరిహాసమైన.

(p. 1323) sāni sāni. [from Skt. స్వామిని.] n. A lady, a woman of rank. స్వామిని, అధిపురాలు, పూజ్యురాలు. A wife, భార్య. (Commonly,) a dancing girl. వేశ్య. దొరసాని or ఏలికసాని a lady or queen, రెడ్డిసాని a farmer's wife. మంత్రసాని a midwife. సానిది sānidi. n. A dancing girl, వేశ్య. సాణిచేప or సానిమొయ్య sāni-chēpa. n. A fish, a species of Labrus. Russell. సానివాండ్లు sāni-vānḍlu. n. plu. Members of the dancing caste. వ్యభిచారముచేత జీవించే స్త్రీలజాతి.

(p. 1355) sairandhri sairandhri. [Skt.] n. A good woman who being deserted by her husband engages to work in another's house. మగడు విడిచిపోయినందున పరగృహముందుండి స్త్రీలకు శృంగారించుపతివ్రత. M. IV. iii.31. A female guard in a harem. అంతపురపుకావలికత్తె. సైరంధ్రీత్వము sairandhrītvamu. n. The state of being a servant maid in another house. పరగృహమందు అడంగులకు శృంగారించేదిగానుండడము.

(p. 1365) strī strī. [Skt.] n. A woman. ఆడుది. adj. Female, feminine. స్త్రీలింగము the feminine gender. స్త్రీలోలుడు one who is enamoured by women. స్త్రీలోలుడు a weak, fickle or effeminate mind. స్త్రీధనము pin-money, the gift bestowed by parents on their daughter after her marriage the wife's property or private purse. స్త్రీఘోషము strī-ghōshamu. n.
