(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

'ఆమహీసురశరణమునకు కామందకియనగనొక్క గానుగలదిసుతుల్ నేమించిబంపగంపంగోమల గతినువ్వులమ్ముకొననేతెంచెన్' P. ii. 115. ప్రయోగశరణాం వైయాకరణాః grammarians resort to or rely upon usage. శరణాగతుడు ṣaran-āgatudu. n. A refugee, one who seeks or takes refuge or shelter with another, one who calls for quarter. శరణుచొచ్చినవాడు. ఆశ్రయించినవాడు. శరణాగతులైరి they threw themselves at his feet, they sought refuge with him. శరనార్థి ṣaraṇ-ārthi. n. A suppliant. petitioner. 'శరణార్థినను గానగాదగు.' Swa. vi. 113. శరణు ṣaraṇu. (another form of శరణము.) n. A refuge, asylum shelter, defence, protection. రక్షణము, ఆశ్రయము. A bow, salutation, prostration, obeisance. నమస్కారము. 'భయార్తులై శరణు జొచ్చివారిని రక్షించుటకంటె' Vish. v. 244. 'విధిగృహాక్షయవిత్తశేవధికిశరణు.' A. vi. 147. శరణుచొచ్చు ṣaraṇu-tsoṭsṭsu. v. n. To take refuge with. శరణుడు ṣaraṇuḍu. n. A preserver, a protector, రక్షకుడు, పోషించువాడు. 'సకలంబుదానైన శరణునకరుగ నొకచచోటు నిలువంగ నొకచోటుకలదె.' L. ii. 262. శరణ్యము or శరణీయము ṣaraṇyamu. adj. Fit to be protected or aided. రక్షింపదగిన. Fit to seek refuge under, శరణుచొరదగిన. n. A protection, defence, shelter, రక్షకము. శరణ్యుడు ṣarṇyuḍu. n. A protector, defender, saviour, రక్షకుడు, 'అర్తజనశరణ్యుండు.' B. v. 1152.

(p. 1244) śarattu , శరద, శరత్కాలము or శరదృతువు ṣarallu. [Skt.] n. The autumnal or sultry season, the two autumn months after the rains. A year, సంవత్సరము. శరదిందువు ṣarad-induvu. n. The autumnal moon. శరదిందుముఖి she whose face is bright as the harvest moon.
