(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 37) aḍugu aḍugu. [Tel.] n. The foot, the footstep, a pace, step, the bottom, basis. A foot in length containing twelve inches. A line of verse. Thus four 'feet' make one stanza, or quatrain. చెట్టు అడుగు the foot of a tree. అడుగురాయి a stone at the bottom కొండ అడుగుననుండే ఊరు a village at the foot of a mountain. ఆ కథను అడుగునుంచి చెప్పు tell the story from the beginning. కుండ అడుగు the bottom of a pot. అడుగంటకోయు to cut off by the root. అడుగుతో పెళ్లగించు to eradicate, to root out. అడుగారిపోవు to be utterly ruined. నా మాటకు అడుగుదాటకు do not transgress my command. వాని అడుగుల జాడ పట్టుకొని పోయినారు they traced his footsteps and followed him. అడుగడుగున or అడుగడుగునకు step by step, now and then, often. అన్నము అడుగంటినది the rice has burnt at the bottom of the pot.

(p. 51) anādi an-ādi. [Skt.] adj. without beginning, eternal. అరంభములేని, నిత్యమైన. అనాదిబీడు immemorial waste, i.e., land that never has been brought under the plough. అనాదీయము [Skt.] adj. Immemorial, aboriginal, of unknown origin. పూర్వీకపు. అనాద్యము adj. Without origin, of unknown origin, everlasting. నిరంతరమైన, ఎన్నటికిని ఉండే. అనాద్యంతము without beginning and end.

(p. 90) alpamu alpamu. [Skt.] adj. Trifling, mean, slight, small, little, petty. స్వల్పమైన, నీచమైన, చిన్న. అల్పకార్యము a small matter. అల్పజ్ఞుడు one that knows little, an ignorant man. అల్పకృష్టి short-sightedness, narrow-mindedness. అల్పప్రాణి a weak creature. అల్పబుద్ధి little-mindedness. అల్పవయస్కుడు one who is tender in age, a mere youth. అల్పాచమనము Urine. అల్పాయుస్సు Tender age. అల్పాయుష్కుడు A short lived man. అల్పారంభము A small beginning. అల్పాహారము A light meal. అల్పుడు n. A mean wretch. నీచుడు, క్షుద్రుడు.

(p. 95) avalōkiñcu ava-lōkinṭsu. [Skt. Root connected with the English word Look.] v. n. To look at. చూచు, వీక్షించు. అవలోకనము n. Sight, seeing. చూడడము. పురావలోకనము re-perusal. సింహావలోకనము retrospection. సింహావలోన పద్యము a verse in which every line looks back to the beginning. వాని ముఖావలోకనము చేయరాదు one should not look at his face. అవలోకితము adj. That which is seen. చూడబడినది.

(p. 114) ādi ādi. [Skt.] n. The beginning. మొదలు Also, an aim గురి. ఆదిని at the beginning, at first. ఆదిముని an ancient prophet. ఆదిశేషువు ādi-ṣēshuvu. [Skt.] n. The old dragon, who is worshipped as the supporter of the earth. ఆది, ఆదిగా ādi. n. Etcetera. వాని గృహాదులు his house, &c. మన్వాదులు Manu and others. ఉత్తరాది నుంచి వచ్చినారు they came from the north. ఉత్తరాదివాండ్లు people of the north. దక్షిణాది సరుకులు goods imported from the south. ఆదికము ādikamu. n. Etcetera. అన్నాదికములు food, &c. ఆదికొను ādi-konu. v. i. To have one's eye on కన్ను వేయు 'వృషభమున కాదికొను బెబ్బులియుంబోలె.' భార: విరాట. v. ఆద్యంతములు (ఆది+అంతము) first and last. ఆద్యంత రహితుడు He who is without origin and end. God.

(p. 76) āyanamu ayanamu. [Skt.] n. Road, path. Half a year. Motion, course. మార్గము, అర్ధవత్సరము, సూర్యుని దక్షిణోత్తరగతి. ఉత్తరాయనము or ఉత్తరాయణము the sun's course for six months in the northern constellations of the zodiac. దక్షిణాయనము the sun's course for six months in the southern constellations of the zodiac. అయనకాలము the interval between the equinoxes. ఆయన భాగము the arc between the vernal equinoctial point and the beginning of the fixed zodiac or first point in Aries. ఆయన వలనము deviation of the ecliptic. అయనవృత్తము the ecliptic.

(p. 120) ārambhamu ārambhamu. [Skt.] n. A beginning, the commencement. మొదలు. ఆరంభించు ārambhinṭsu. v. t. To begin, to commence. మొదలుపెట్టు.

(p. 123) ārōhaṇamu ārōhaṇamu. [Skt.] n. Ascent, a staircase, Elevating, raising. ధ్వజారోహణము a certain rite at the beginning of a feast when the 'flag is raised.' ఆరోహము ārōhamu, n. Length, ascent, rising, creeping up. The buttocks. పిరుదులు, నితంబము. 'ఆరోహభరముననడుగులు తడబడ.' B. VIII. 450. స్వరారోహము rising notes, swell in music. ఆరోహించు ārōhinṭsu. v. n. To mount upon. ఆరోహుడు or ఆరోహకుడు a rider. గుర్రపు రౌతు.

(p. 186) ettu ettu. [Tel.] v. n. To rise పుట్టు. To occur, come about కలుగు. To start బయలుదేరు. To come on (as a disease.) వానికి అతిసారము ఎత్తినది dysentery came on. వానికి వెర్రియెత్తినది madness came on him; he became mad. నాకు ఆకలియెత్తినది I am hungry. గాలియెత్తినది the wind arose. నేను వాంతియెత్తితిని I vomited. ఎత్తించు ettinṭsu. [Causal of ఎత్తు] v. t. To lift. To cause to raise, erect, or build. ఎత్తికొను or ఎత్తుకొను etti-konu. v. i. To bear, to carry వహించు. To attempt యత్నించు, v. t. (p. 258) kaliyugamu kali-yugamu. [Skt.] n. The kali age, i.e. Modern times beginning from the Deluge. The present or Iron age. ఈ కలియుగమున in these hard times.

(p. 354) gatamu gatamu. [Skt.] adj. Lost, gone, past, over, late. పోయిన, గతదినము the last day. గతఫలము loss of advantage. గతజీవితులయి who had lost their lives. గతకాలము the past time. గతకులము a family which is extinct. గతజలసేతుబంధనము banks for a stream that has run dry, a proverb for pains taken too late (shutting the stable door after the horse is stolen.) గతాహంకారులై he who has lost his wits. గతాహంకారులై they being stripped of their pride. గతము n. Passing away. పోక. గతపడు. gata-paḍu. v. n. To pass away. కడచు. To die చచ్చు గతపడ్డ dead. గతవడగ్రస్తవద్యము or ముక్తవదగ్రస్తవద్యము gata-pada-grasta-padyamu. n. A poetical conceit, Capped lines wherein the last word of each line is repeated at the beginning of the next.

(p. 515) tala tala [Tel.] n. The head. శిరస్సు. The hair on the head. తలవెండ్రుకలు. The top కొన. The front ముందుభాగము. Height ఎత్తు. Whole మొత్తము. An occasion, a time సమయము, ఎడ. Telugu books were usually written on palm-leaves connected by a cord running through: and to tear out a leaf or rescind a bond, the top is torn. Fat-headed, proud, silly. ఇంతపనిచేస్తే వారిలో ఎట్లు తలయెత్తవచ్చును if he did this how could he shew his face among them? తలతో చెల్లించెను he paid for it with his head, it cost him his life. తలకుఎక్కేపని a perilous undertaking. తలకు ఎక్కినది it got into his head, he is intoxicated. తలకొట్టివేయు to decapitate or behead. తల (for తలను) మోయు to carry on the head. శిరసావహించు. BD. v. 309. ఒకతల on the one hand. తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu. n. The crest, tire, top, head-dress. పోగా. Chief ముఖ్యము. The head or leader.
