(p. 398) grāmamu grāmamu. [Skt.] n. A village. ఊరు. A scale in music. షడ్జాదిస్వరము. గ్రామత్రయము the three tones, treble, tenor and base. A crowd or multitude సమూహము. as గుణగ్రామము or శబ్దగ్రామము. గ్రామకార్యము grāma-kāryamu. n. Village affairs: worldly matters. గ్రామకంఠము grāma-kanṭhamu. n. The glebe, or pasture land appertaining to a village. గ్రామణి grāmaṇi. n. A chief: a head man. గ్రామాధిపతి. గ్రామణి adj. Chief, head, leading. ముఖ్యుడు నరగ్రామణి, the noblest of men. దుర్గ్రామణి a wicked ruler. గ్రామణ్యము grāmanyamu. n. The rule or headship of a town. Imperiousness, violence, outrage. గ్రామణ్యముగా scoffingly. గ్రామదేవత grāma-dēvata. n. A village god or goddess. These are the original Dravidian deities. Among them the male deities are chiefly these: పోతురాజు, కాట్రేడు, అంకాళు, గంగయ, చెన్నడు and మైలారు. The principal village goddesses are పెద్దమ్మ, కాట్రేణి, అంకాళమ్మ, ఎక్కళమ్మ, ఎల్లమ్మ, మల్లమ్మ, మామిళ్లమ్మ, మైసమ్మ or మైసూరమ్మ, (i. e. మహిషీ.) మారియమ్మ, మారెమ్మ (who probably is meant for 'Maria') యాగాతమ్మ (that is, Saint Agatha,) and సుంకలమ్మ or సుంకెళమ్మ, of whom one inflicts the cholera, another the small pox (see అమ్మవారు) another murrain, another blight. None have any beneficent powers, and they are worshipped to avert their displeasure. గ్రామసింహము grāma-simhamu. n. The lion of the village, i.e., a dog. గ్రామస్థుడు grāma-sthuḍu. n. A villager. స్వగ్రామస్థుడు a fellow citizen or neighbour. గ్రామాంతము grām-āntamu. n. The outlying portion of a village, i.e. the Panchama quarter. మాలపల్లె. గ్రామాదులు grām-ādulu. n. Villages. Lit. Villages, &c. గ్రామ్యము grāmyamu. adj. Village-born; produced in or relating to a village. Vulgar, rude, rustic. Common, colloquial, unclassical, inelegant: The opposite of శాస్త్రీయము. In Grammar the term is applied to conversational forms as వస్తాడు, తెస్తాడు, like they're, I'm, you're, he's, in English, which are supposed to be in admissible in literature, though they occur in all even the best poets. గ్రామ్యధర్మము grāmya-dharmamu. n. Sexual intercourse. సంభోగము. Lit. what is usual or the fashion, or way of the world.

(p. 570) tribhaṅgi tri-bhangi. adj. 'Three ways' twisted. The name of a certain graceful attitude in which some statues stand: such as the వేణుగోపాల or Piping Apollo; or that given to the ద్వారపాలకులు or door keepers carved on each side of a temple gate. The word frequently occurs in books on sculpture (Silpi) and in some poems, but is no where precisely defined. త్రిభంగిన్, three fold: in three ways. మూడువిధములవునట్టుగాను Swa. iii. 76. త్రిభాగము tri-bhāgamu. adj. Divided into three parts or shares. త్రిభువనము or త్రిలోకము tri-bhuvanamu. n. The three worlds: heaven, earth, and hell, i.e., the universe. త్రిమూర్తి tri-mūrti. n. The Hindu Triad, consisting of Bramha, Vishnu, and Siva. త్రియామ tri-yāma. n. Night. M. VII. v. 317. త్రిరాత్రము tri-rātramu. n. Three nights, మూడురాత్రులు. త్రిలింగము tri-lingamu. adj. 'Three gendered.' -a phrase for Sanskrit nouns of the common gender. 'Three formed.' 'త్రిమూర్తుల త్రిలింగవ్యక్తులన్.' B. vii. 333. Also a fictitous or fanciful name (యౌగికపదము) used for the Telugu language. It is peculiar to Appa Cavi, and a few other modern writers, but is not mentioned in any ancient or classical poet: nor in any Sanskrit Dictionary, in lists of the 'fifty six countries.' See W. Vish. Pur. p. 193. In some modern lists Troilinga is named, but without any authority. త్రివర్గము a collection of three (things) as Duty (ధర్మము,) Wealth (అర్థము,) and Desire (కామము) or the Gunas called సత్వరజస్తమములు, or the states called Increase (వృద్ధి), Decrease (క్షయము), and Stationariness (స్థానము.) త్రివళి tri-vali. n. A threefold corrugation on the stomach considered a beauty in women. 'లితకృశోదరంబు తరశత్రివళీయుత రోమరాజియున్.' M. I. iv. 49. త్రివిక్రముడు tri-vikramuḍu. n. He who subjugated the three worlds in three strides, i.e., Vishnu. త్రివిష్టవము tri-vishtapamu. n. Heaven. స్వర్గము. త్రివేణి tri-vēṇi. n. Lit: The Triple braided, an epithet of the Ganges which according to mythology, springs in three streams from the head of Siva. త్రివేణుక or త్రివేణువు tri-vēṇuka. n. The bands of a carriage pole. నొగకట్లు. T. v. 16. M. VII. i. 302. త్రిశంకువు tri-ṣankuvu. n. Name of the father of the hero Harischandra. త్రిశంకుస్వర్గము the Aerial regions, the place of happiness created for త్రిశంకు who could not be admitted into heaven on account of his low origin. త్రిశూలము tri-ṣālamu. n. The three pronged weapon of Vishnu. త్రిషవణము tri-sharvaṇamu. n. The three ablutions, to be performed at morn, noon and night. M. XII. iv. 102. త్రిషవణస్నాయి he who bathes thrice a day. త్రిసప్త tri-sapta. adj. Thrice seven. BRY. iii. 19. త్తిసంధ్యము tri-sandhyamu. n. The meeting times of forenoon, the noon and the afternoon. పూర్వాహ్న మధ్యాహ్న అపరాహ్న సంధ్యలు.

(p. 591) dikku dikku. [Skt.] n. A quarter, part, side, direction. దిశ. An airt or point of the compass. The ten directions named in Hindu books are the four points. N. E. S. W. and the intermediate four: N.-E. (ఈశాన్యమూల) S.-E. (ఆగ్నేయమూల) S.-W. (నైరృతిమూల,) N.-W. (వాయవ్యమూల) to which are added the Zenith and Nadir. దిక్కులుమ్రోయగా while the heavens resounded. Quarter, shelter, asylum, refuge, protection, patronage, శరణము. దిక్కులేని, దిక్కుమాలిన or దిక్కేదిన helpless, resourceless, devoid of any protector; also vile, abominable. దిక్కుగలచోటు a refuge. దిగ్విమల స్వరూపుడై the loveliest in the world. దిక్పతి or దిక్పాలుడు dik-pati. n. A demigod who rules one airt or point of the compass; the regent or genius that governs that quarter. ఈశానాదిదిక్పాలురు the genii of the north-east and other directions దిక్కమొగములు or దిక్కామొగములు dikka-mogamulu. [from దిక్కు+ముఖము.] n. Faces turned in every direction. People that flee in all directions through fear, భయముచేత దిక్కున కొక్కరుగా పోయినవారు. దిక్కా మొగముగా timidly, భీతిచే బెదరియుండినట్లుగా. దిక్కరి dik-kari. (దిక్+కరి.) n. One of the mythica, elephants that support the corners of the world. దిగంతము dig-antamu. (దిక్+అంతము.) n. An end of the earth. దిగంతఖ్యాతి world wide fame. దిగంబరుడు dig-ambaruḍu. (దిక్+అంబరుడు.) adj. Lit. 'Sky vested,' having the air as a robe. Naked, stark-naked, undraped. దిసమొలవాడు. n. An epithet of Siva. దిగంబరురాలు she who is naked. దిగ్గజము dig-gajamu. n. One of the eight elephants (గజ) the guard the cardinal points (దిక్కులు) of the world. A poetical phrase answering to the poles of heaven. దిగ్గజములుమ్రోయ making the welkin ring. కవిదిగ్గజము a leading or classical author. దిగ్బంధము dig-bandhamu. n. A magic rite, restraining by spells the influence of certain stars. cf. Job. XXXVIII. 31. దిగ్భ్రమము dig-bhramamu. n. Giddiness, stupor, amazement. దిక్కులతబ్బిబ్బు, భ్రమము. దిగ్బ్రమితాత్ముడై bewildered, horrified, amazed. దిగ్గిజయము dig-vijayamu. n. Dominion, empire. Universal conquest. A royal progress or tour. దిగ్మండలము or దిగ్మండలి dig-mandalamu. n. The horizon.

(p. 686) pañca pancha. [Skt.] adj. Large, big, as పంచాస్యము or పంచాననము lit: 'huge mouthed,' i.e., a lion. పంచగడ్డము a great beard. పంచడబ్బు a mere fiction. (this name is given to apocryphal poems that are not grounded on any classical tradition as the మైరావణచరిత్ర, శతముఖరామాయణము, కృష్ణార్జున సంవాదము, జైమినిభారతము.

(p. 841) prasiddhi pra-siddhi. [Skt.] n. Celebrity, fame, notoriety. ఖ్యాతి. ప్రసిద్ధిగలవాడు a celebrated man. ఈమాట అంతటను ప్రసిద్ధిగానున్నది this story is known everywhere. ప్రసిద్ధము pra-siddhamu. adj. Known, celebrated, ప్రసిద్ధికెక్కిన. ఇది ప్రసిద్ధమయిన కావ్యముకాదు this is not a classical poem. ప్రసిద్ధపత్రిక or ప్రకటనపత్రిక a newspaper, a proclamation, a notification. ప్రసిద్ధిగా pra-sidḍhi-gā. adv. Confessedly, avowedly, notoriously. అతడు వస్తాడని ప్రసిద్ధిగానున్నది there is a general talk of his coming. ప్రసిద్ధిచేయు or ప్రసిద్ధపరచు to publish, or make known.

(p. 1095) lakṣaṇamu lakshaṇamu. [Skt.] n. A sign, mark, token. గురుతు. A symptom, an indication; a characteristic, attribute, quality; a predicate, any thing by which an object is designated, or distinguished. పీరు. A rule of art or science. విధి. The Science of Grammar, &c. వ్యాకరణాది శాస్త్రము. Perfection, comeliness, beauty, correctness, precision. వర్షలక్షణములు the signs of rain. జ్వర లక్షణములు the symptoms of fever. అక్షరలక్షణము the description of letters in grammar, i.e., Orthography. ఛందోలక్షణము prosody. ఆ రోగ లక్షణములను చెప్పుచున్నాను I will now describe the symptoms of that disease. లక్షణయుక్తమైన కావ్యము a classical poem, a book written according to the rules, లక్షణయా ḷakshaṇam-aina. adj. Hand-some, beautiful అందమైన లక్షణయా lakshaṇayā. adv. Metaphorically. లక్షము lakshamu. n. A butt, mark, or aim. గురి. లక్షించు or ఆలక్షించు lakshinṭsu. v. a. To aim at, to see, గురిపెట్టు, చూచు. లక్ష్మము lakṣhmamu. n. A mark, token, or sing. చిహ్నము, గురుతు 'మీనలక్ష్మాకృతి.' T. iii. 149.

(p. 1100) lākṣaṇikuḍu lākshaṇikuḍu. [Skt. from లక్షణము.] n. One who knows the rules of the various arts, &c. A grammariun. A classical scholar. లక్షణము తెలిసినవాడు, లక్షణజ్ఞుడు.

(p. 1267) s sa. [Skt.] (In composition,) with, together with సకుటుంబముగా together with one's family. సగుణము having (or endowed with) properties or qualities. సజాతీయము of the same tribe, of the same species. సటీక accompanied with a commentary. సదియుడు one who is kind or good. స పత్రము having wings, రెక్కలుగల. సమర్మకముగా in full detail, circumstantially, with all the particulars, minutely, దాచకుండా. సమూలము together with the root, having a root, entire, వేరుతోకూడా, యావత్తు. వారు సమూలముగా నాశమైనారు they are ruined, root and branch. సమేలంపు derisory, satirical. Pref. 87. సవిస్తారముగా at full length, extensively, with all the particulars, completely, to the full, వివరముగా. సవినయముగా respectfully. సవినయుడై modestly. సహిరణ్యోదకపూర్వకముగా entirely; (lit. with money and water) - a phrase used in making gifts. సహృదయుడు a good hearted man. సహేతుకము reasonable, well grounded. కారణముతోగూడిన. సహేతుకముగా with the reason or the grounds, కారణసహితముగా. సాకూతము significant, అభిప్రాయసహితమైన. సాకూతస్మితము a wanton glance. A. iv. 41. సానుకూలము favour or kindness, success, ఉపకారము. ఆ పని వానికి సానుకూలమైన తరువాత when he succeeded in that affair. అది సానుకూలముకాక పోయినది it did not succeed. సానుకూలము favourable, kind, ఉపకారమైన. సానుకూలమైన మాట favourable word. సానుకూలముగా favourably, kindly, ఉపకారముగా. సాపత్న్యము the condition of a co-wife, the state of being or having a rival wife, సపత్నీభావము, సవతితనము. 'నీకనుపమసాపత్న్య సంపాదనంబు.' A. ii. 24. 'సాపత్న్యమునను గాకసైరింపగలదెయేకడపపత్నీ.' N. iii. 122. సాపత్న్యుడు an enemy, శత్రువు; the son of a co-wife. సుపత్నీపుత్రుడు. సాపరాధి a culprit, offender, sinner, he who is guilty, నేరస్థుడు. సావకాశము leisure, spare time, an interval, తీరిక, వ్యవధానము. సావధానముగా carefully, diligently, attentively, with due heed, జాగ్రతతో.
