(p. 19) akka akka. [Tel. a Dravidian word borrowed by Sanskrit, where it is used in the sense of mother. cf. Lat. acca] n. An elder sister. అక్కచెల్లెళ్లు elder and younger sisters. పెద్దక్క the eldest sister. Any woman older than oneself is usually styled అక్క elder sister, or అమ్మ mother, madam: and any man older than onself is usually styled అస్న elder brother, or, అయ్య father, sir. పంటలక్క a cook or kitchen maid. See అక్కలవాడ.

(p. 38) aḍḍamu aḍḍamu. [Tel.] n. Obstacle, hindrance, A screen. అభ్యంతరము, ఆటంకము, చటు. A pledge తాకట్టు నీ మాటకు అడ్డము లేదు no one will resist you. వాండ్లకు మాకు గోడ అడ్డముగా ఉండినది there was a wall between them and us. ఒక నగను అడ్డము పెట్టి యిరువైరూపాయలు తెచ్చినాడు he pawned a jewel and got twenty rupees. నా పనికి అడ్డము వచ్చినాడు he opposed my endeavours. మొగుణ్ని అడ్డముపెట్టుకొని తానే అన్ని పనులు చూచుకొనిపోయినది she used her husband as a screen and carried on the business. వాడు తండ్రికి అడ్డమాడుతాడు he opposes or contradicts his father. తిరుపతికి పోయేలోగా మూడేళ్లు అడ్డమువస్తవి there are three rivers to cross on the way to Tirupati. ఏదో ఒకటి వచ్చి అడ్డముపడినది something has got in the way. వానికి అడ్డము తగిలినారు they interrupted him. కొంతదూరము దోవనే పోయి అవతల అడ్డము తిరిగినాడు or అడ్డము తొక్కినాడు he went along some way and then cut across. 'కరాగ్రములు దృష్టులకడ్డమిడుచు.' BD. iv. 1532. అడ్డముగా aḍḍamu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Crosswise, across, transversely. చెట్టు కండ్లకు అడ్డముగానున్నది the tree intercepts the view, నేను అడ్డముగా నిలిస్తిని I stood in his way.

(p. 41) atta atta. [Tel. borrowed by Skt. in dramas.] n. Father's sister, mother-in-law, maternal uncle's wife. అత్తమామూలు mother-in-law and father-in-law.

(p. 43) adaru or అదురు adaru. [Tel.] v. n. To tremble, shake, quake, shiver. To dread. కంపించు, భయపడు, భూమి అదురుచున్నది the earth trembles. దాన్ని చూడగానే వాని గుండెలు అదిరినవి his heart quivered to see this. కుడి కన్ను అదురుచున్నది my right eye tingles. వాడు వట-టి అదురుగుండె he is a coward. అడరు or అడురు n. Concussion, shaking, tremour, trembling, fear, కంపనము, చలనము, కొట్టుకొనడము, భయము. భూమి అదురు a tremour or convulsion of the earth. వానికి తండ్రి వద్ద కొంచెము అదురు ఉండవలెను he ought to fear his father. అదరుగడ or అదురుగడ adarugaḍa. [Tel.] n. Daunting, fright. బెదురు. అదరిపడు or అదిరిపడు adari-paḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To caper about, to curvet. ఉలికిపడు. to be arrogant. అదరిపాటు n. Pride. అదరిపాటున. adv. Suddenly, unexpectedly. ఏమరిపాటున, 'అదరిపాటున వారాళియుదుటు చూచి.' N. i. 126.

(p. 57) anumati anumati. [Skt.] n. Agreement, consent, permission, leave. The fourteenth day of the moon's age, on which she rises one digit less than full. సమ్మతి, అనుజ్ఞ. న్యూనేందుకళాపూర్ణిమ, చతుర్ధశీ యుక్తపూర్ణిమ తండ్రి అనుమతిని కొమారుడు రంగయ్య వ్రాలు signed by Rangayya with the consent of his father అనుమతించు v. n. To consent.

(p. 64) apāmpati apām-pati. [Skt.] n. The father of waters, the sea or ocean. సముద్రము.

(p. 65) appa appa. [Tel. cognate with Heb. Abba, father.] n. Papa, a father, An elder sister. తండ్రి, అక్క (This word is frequently added to the proper names of men; as a term of common respect; thus రంగప్ప, రామప్ప.)

(p. 67) abba abba. [Heb. Abba. Aryan Pa.] n. A father. తండ్రి. నాయబ్బతోడుగా I swear by my father. వీడు వాని అబ్బ this man is ten times worse than he is. నీయబ్బతో పోయి చెప్పు go and tell your granny. అబ్బ, అబ్బా or అబ్బబ్బా! An interjection of grief or admiration a common exclamation. అయ్యో!

(p. 77) ayya ayya. [Tel.] n. Father. తండ్రి. Sir. ఏమయ్య what, Sir, ముసలయ్య an old gentleman., మీ అయ్యలు your fathers: (this word includes the brothers of a father.) బాపనయ్య a Bramin. అయ్యా! O Sir! అయ్యో or అయ్యయో or అయ్యయ్యో interj. Alas! Alas! సంతాపార్థకములు. అయ్యవారు n. A teacher. ఉపాధ్యాయులు. అయ్యరే or అయ్యారే interj. Oh, O thou! హాహా. అయ్యల్ల interj. Sir, father.

(p. 78) araṇamu araṇamu. [Skt.] n. A present given by a father-in-law to his son-in-law or by a father to his daughter, at the nuptials. పెండ్లికొడుకునకు మాములు ఇచ్చే వస్తుసామగ్రి పెండ్లికూతురికి తండ్రి యిచ్చే దిన్ని 'అల్లునికి రైవతుడొసంగెయరణమపుడు.' Balarama. vi. 157.

(p. 85) arpaṇamu arpaṇamu. [Skt.] n. An offering, dedication, delivering up. Placing. ప్రదానము, ఉంచడము. అంకురార్పణము the offering of buds to a god. అర్పించు arpinṭsu. v. a. To offer, dedicate. ఇచ్చు. తనసొమ్మునంతా పరులకు అర్పించు కూర్చున్నాడు he gave up all his goods and became a beggar. అర్పితము arpitamu. [Skt.] adj. Offered, dedicated. ఇవ్వబడ్డ. కంఠార్పితభూషణము an ornament placed on the neck. ఆ గ్రామము సముద్రార్పితము అయినది the village became the prey of the sea. తన తండ్రికి అర్పితముగా కొంత భూమిని దానము చేసినాడు he gave some land as a gift in memory of his father.

(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.

(p. 140) illaṭamu illaṭamu. [Tel. from ఇల్లు.] n. Residence in the house of one's wife's father. ఇల్లటపల్లుడు one who has become a member of his father-in-law's household. ఇల్లటము పెట్టిరి they kept their son-in-law in their family. ఇల్లటకాడు the son-in-law thus kept in their family.

(p. 148) uṇḍu uṇḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To be, exist, live. 2. To reside, dwell. 3. To remain, stop, stay. 4. To last, endure, continue. 5. To keep still, stay quiet; 6. To wait. To stand over, remain as a surplus. ఉండిపోవు, శేషించు. 7. To have. నాకు భార్య ఉండగా as I have a wife. 'కనకము ఉన్నవాడు' he who possesses gold. -- 8. To keep a feast. విజయదశమి ఉండినారు they kept the Vijaya Dasami feast. ఉన్న మాట యిది this is the fact. ఉన్నరూపు the true form, the reality. నేను అక్కడ పది దినములుంటిని I remained there ten days, వాడు (ఇంట్లో) ఉన్నాడా is he at home? మీ తండ్రి బాగా ఉన్నాడా is your father well? ఉన్నట్టుండి suddenly, just as they were. ఉన్నారు they are; రేపుదాక ఉంటారా will they remain till to-morrow? అక్కడ ఉన్నారా are they there?

(p. 174) ūḍu ūḍu. [Tel.] v. n. To part, drop out, slip out, జారు, రాలు. To give way, fail: to be unfastened, loosened, separated. వదులగు. To flee, run away. పారిపోవు. తండ్రి నోట్లో ఊడిపడ్డాడు he is the very image of his father. ఊడగొట్టు to take out, root up. remove. ఊడదీయు to pull out, to take off (skin or clothes), to unloose. ఊడబీకు to root out. ఊడలాగు to pull out, to draw out.
