(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 4) aṅgadamu angadamu. [Skt. from అంగము.] n. A bracelet worn upon the upper arm. కేయూరము, బాహుపురి.

(p. 6) añca anṭsa. [Tel. & Kan.] Also అంచె. The post or mail for letters. అంచలంచలుగా పోయినారు they proceeded by relays. అంచలగుర్రాలమీద పోయిరా they rode post.

(p. 8) aṇṭu antu [Tel.] v. t. To touch. అంటించు to cause to touch. అంటినట్టుగా ఉండే close at hand. ఆ ఊరితో అంటినట్టుగా ఉండే ఒకపల్లె a hamlet close by the town. వానికి అదరంటినది fear seized him. తెల్ల అంటుతీగె convolvulus dentatus.

(p. 13) antā antā. [Tel. Colloquial for అంతయును] adj. All, whole (always used after the noun,) as ఊరంతా all the town. adv. Completely, wholly, altogether. బొత్తిగా; n. యావత్తు, సమస్తము. అంతా ఆయనకు తెలుసును he knows everything.

(p. 14) andu andu. [Tel.] v. n. To be within reach; (with the Dative) to reach at. అది చేతికందుసు it is within the reach of the hand. అది చేతికందును it is not within my reach. తమ జాబు నాకు అందలేదు I have not received your letter. అది నాకందరు I cannot reach it. అందచేయు to cause to be delivered.

(p. 17) ambēda ambēda. [Tel.] n. A simpleton. మెత్తనివాడు. 'వేదులుపల్కి నన్నదరవేయగజూచెద నిందునంతయంబేదలులేరు.' పద్మ iii. 57.

(p. 19) akāramu akāramu. [Skt.] n. The letter అ.

(p. 20) akkaramu for అక్షరము akkaramu. [Skt.] n. A letter of the alphabet. వర్ణము.

(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 22) akṣauhiṇi akshauhiṇi. [Skt. The anikini (అనికిని) consists of 27 vahinis (వాహినులు.) and 27 being the cube aksha (అక్ష) of 3, it is probable that akshauhini is a compound of aksha and vāhini. Wms.] n. A host, a complete army, 21870 గజములు, 21870 రథములు, 95910 గుర్రములు, 106350 భటులుగల సైన్యము.

(p. 28) accu aṭṭsu. n. A stamp, a form for printing or for any other impression, a type, a printing press. An axle-tree. A mould. The handle of a handmill, A weaver's reed or stay. An image, or picture. ప్రతి రూపమును కల్పించేటిది, ఇరుసుమాను, తిరగటి పిడి, బట్ట వేసేటందుకు సాధనమైనది, ప్రతిబింబము. పోత అచ్చు the mould wherein clay or metal is cast. ఇటికె అచ్చు the box or mould used in making bricks. అచ్చక్షరములు printed letters. అచ్చువేయు to print. ఇంకా అచ్చువేయని unprinted, unpublished.అచ్చువేసేవాడు a printer. అక్షరాల అచ్చులు types of letters. బెల్లపు అచ్చు a square mould into which boiled treacle is poured, and thus formed into cakes. అచ్చుబెల్లము a lump of jaggery, అచ్చొత్తు to seal, impress with a mark, to print అచ్చుకూటము (a Madras word,) A printing press office ముద్రాశాల. అచ్చుబల్ల the frame on which a weaver's reed is fixed. అచ్చువేసినయెద్దు a 'brahminy' bull that is marked or stamped and is allowed to wander at large, as consecrated to the deity. అచ్చుకట్టు or అచ్చుకట్టువేయు v. a. To prepare land for wet cultivation by throwing up banks to divide it into plots, partitions or beds. మళ్లుగా ఏర్పరచు అచ్చుకట్టించినమడి or అచ్చుకట్టు పొలము a field which is divided into beds for wet cultivation. అచ్చులపోయు to find yarn on the frame for weaving (Cuddapa.) అచ్చుగా aṭṭsu-gā. [Tel.] adv. Precisely, exactly, clearly, evidently. 'పిచ్చుకపై బ్రహ్మాస్తము నచ్చుగ దొడిగినవితాన.' T. iv. 22.

(p. 32) aṭṭu or అట్టుగా aṭṭu. [Tel.] adv. (A particle) So that, as, according to. అతడు వచ్చేటట్టు వ్రాయుము write a letter so that he may come. మీరు చెప్పినట్టుగా చేస్తిని I did as you bid me. ఆయన చెప్పినట్టు according to his order. వాడు ఇంకా అవతలకు పోవునట్టు అగుపడ్డాడు he seemed as though he would go further. నేను చెప్పినట్టు చేసినాడు he did as I said. వారు సాగిపోయినట్టుగా చెప్పెను he said that they had passed on. అట్టు గాక or అట్లాకాక aṭṭugāka. adv. Without being so. అట్టుల aṭṭula. adv. As soon as, soon after. వెంటనే. 'చెట్టు దిగి వచ్చినట్టుల.' H. ii. 47. Just as. ఆప్రకారము. అట్టే (for అట్లాగే) aṭṭē. [Tel.] adv. Thus. So. In the same manner, as it was. అట్టే ఉండనీ leave it as it is. నొప్పి అట్టే ఉన్నది the pain is in the same state. అట్టే పోయినాడు he went off straightway. అట్టే మాట్లాడుతూ ఉండినాడు he was talking straight on. ఆ గుర్రములట్టే ఉన్నవి the horses are as they were: they are untouched.

(p. 41) atuku atuku. [Tel.] n. Junction, union patch. ౛తపరిచినది. అతుకులబ్రతుకు living in another man's house. అతుకు v. n. To join. To agree with, to be fit. అంటుకొను అతుకు లేక అతికించు, v. t. To solder, cement, join, unite to. అంటించు, చేర్చు, జరపరచు. అతుకుబడి fixing; posting; the engagement to cultivate taken from the ryot at the commencement of the Revenue year; leasing. అతుకుబడిచేయు to rent out. అతుకుబాటు giving or letting out on rent.

(p. 44) adda adda. [from Skt. అర్థ] adj. Half. సగము. అద్దగోడ. a wall that serves as a screen. అర్థరూపాయి a half rupee. అద్దమణుగు a half maund. అద్దపావులా a two anna piece. అద్దమరేయి addama-rēyi. n. Midnight. అర్ధరాత్రము, నిశీధి 'అద్ద మరేయద్దాసరి.' A. vi. 10. In revenue phrase, అద్ద means an incomplete heap. Also, a stamp or seal. వట్టిముద్ర. అద్దలవాడు he who stamps or marks the salt heaps. A marker or stamper. Also, a salt manufacturer. ముద్ర మనిషి, ఉప్పు చేసేవాడు. అద్ద n. A dry measure, half of a 'sola.' A small heap of straw not yet thrashed. అర్థసోల, నూర్చకుండా వేసిన చిన్న కుప్ప.
