(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 1) a a. 7. [Tel.] A suffix meaning 'By oneself without the help of another'. సర్వమును నీవ యెరుగుదువు. Or, without a rival, e. g., 'శత్రుక్షయంబు చేసి యెవ్వరికి నీక తామ యేలు చుండెమనియెడి మోహంబున.' భాగ. xii 18.

(p. 1) a a. 6. [Tel.] A suffix meaning 'Only this and no other.' 'దీనిం దెనుగున పాటించి రచింప నీన ప్రౌఢు డవరయన్.' రాఘ. i. 12.

(p. 1) a a. 4. [Tel.] A vocative suffix. తమ్ముడ = తమ్ముడు+అ = O (younger) brother! వనమ = వనమా. Usually the lengthened form is used, as రామా.

(p. 2) aṅka anka. [Tel. √ అన్్క్ = to move in a curve.] Another form of అణక (q.v.)

(p. 3) aṅkiya ankiya. [Tel.] n. Another form of అంకె.

(p. 5) aṅgāravalli angāra-valli. [Skt.] n. A species of Karanja. (Galedupa arborea.) Another plant (Ovieda verticillata. Rox.) చిరుతేకు, నిప్పువన్నె పువ్వులుగల కానుగు భేదము.

(p. 6) añciya anchiya. [Tel.] n. Another form of అంచె.

(p. 6) añce anche. [Tel. & Kan.] n. The post, a relay of horses or palankeen bearers. తపాలు, టపా. A row of things. అంచెల చెలందు at every station, మను. iv. 87. అంచెలుకట్టు v. n. To be at one's post: to wait as post runners one after another. 'అంచెలుకట్టు కాలితొడుసైచన నీవుగదమ్మ.' మను. v. 72. See also అంచే.

(p. 7) añjana anjana. [Skt.] n. The mother of Hanumān. ఆంజనేయుడు Hanumān.

(p. 8) aṇṭisa or అంటిసా antisa. [Tel.] n. The Bur plant. A kind of grass that sticks to the cloth. Connection. సంబంధము. దానికిని వాడికిని కొంచెము అంటిసా ఉన్నట్టు ఉన్నది she has something to do with him.

(p. 8) aṇṭu antu. [Tel.] n. Uncleanness, defilement by touch, impurity, such as is caused by the death of a relative, or by touching a lower caste man. Relationship. అంటుది an unclean woman. అంటుపడ్డాడు he was polluted, he became unclean. అంటుగా ఉండేయిల్లు. a house ceremonially polluted. మాకు రేపు అంటు (లేక, మైల) వదులును tomorrow we shall be free from [ceremonial] impurity. వానికనిమాకును మరేమి అంటుసంటు లేదు I have no connection with him. I have nothing to do with him.

(p. 9) aṇḍa anḍa [Tel.] n. Nearness; assistance, protection, patronage. ఆసరా, ఆశ్రయము. అండగోడ a buttress, a sloping wall, built to support another. ఆయన అండ చేరి ఉన్నాను I am under his protection. ఆయనను అండచేసికొనియున్నాను I look upon him as my supporter, I hold to him.

(p. 11) antaramu antaramu. [Skt.] n. Interval, intermediate space. Period, term. Difference, disparity. Rank. వాని అంతరమేమి నీ అంతరమేమి consider his rank and yours. అంతరమునందు in the midst. కాలాంతరమందు at another time. గ్రంథాంతర మందు in another book. ప్రత్యంతరము another copy. పాఠాంతరము another reading. వనాంతరమునందు in the forest. స్థలాంతరమందు in another place; elsewhere. భాషాంతరము a translation into another language. అతని ముఖాంతరముగా through him. దేశాంతరముపోయినాడు he is gone to another country, he is in foreign part. మతాంతరము another opinion or religion. కర్మాంతరము the funeral ceremonies.

(p. 12) antastu antastu. [Tel.] n. A secret place a hiding place, a corner. A square compartment. తొట్టికట్టు A storey, or range, one above another, as the decks of a ship. రెండు అంతస్తుల యిల్లు a two storeyed house. 'ఎరుగవలసిన యంతస్తులెల్లజూచె.' పర.4.అ.
