(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 44) adda adda. [from Skt. అర్థ] adj. Half. సగము. అద్దగోడ. a wall that serves as a screen. అర్థరూపాయి a half rupee. అద్దమణుగు a half maund. అద్దపావులా a two anna piece. అద్దమరేయి addama-rēyi. n. Midnight. అర్ధరాత్రము, నిశీధి 'అద్ద మరేయద్దాసరి.' A. vi. 10. In revenue phrase, అద్ద means an incomplete heap. Also, a stamp or seal. వట్టిముద్ర. అద్దలవాడు he who stamps or marks the salt heaps. A marker or stamper. Also, a salt manufacturer. ముద్ర మనిషి, ఉప్పు చేసేవాడు. అద్ద n. A dry measure, half of a 'sola.' A small heap of straw not yet thrashed. అర్థసోల, నూర్చకుండా వేసిన చిన్న కుప్ప.

(p. 61) anvitamu anvitamu. [Skt.] adj. Connected, యుక్తమైన, చేరిన, మిళితమైన. ఈ వాక్యము అనన్వితముగానున్నది this is a broken phrase. అన్వితుడు n. He who possesses a thing. సకలసుగుణాన్వితుడు he who is possessed of all virtues.

(p. 63) apasākṣi apa-sākshi [Skt.] n. (Not a good phrase) A false witness. తప్పుసాక్షి అపసాక్ష్యము false evidence. తప్పుసాక్ష్యము.

(p. 93) avadūru ava-dūru. [Tel.] n. (a bad phrase) Calumny, defamation. అపదూరు, నింద, అపవాదము.

(p. 99) aṣa asha. [Tel. for అట] v. They say, it is said: as వెళ్లినాడష they say he is gone. (This and the following forms are used chiety by Vaidiki women among the Brahmins.) అషు ashu. [Tel. for అట్లు] adv. Thus, so. అషయితే If so. అషుంట adv. Further or farther. అవతల. అషువంటి for అటువంటి adj. Such. అషే for అటే a phrase used in questioning a woman: thus, వాడితో చెప్పినావషే did you tell him? (a word addressed to the wife, &c.)

(p. 122) āru āru. [Tel.] v. n. To teem with, be full of నిండు; to be or have. సొంపారిన beautiful. ఇంపారిన delightful. నిండారుగానున్నది it is full. అలరారు blooming. చెన్నారిన lovely. పొల్పారిన charming (compare the affix ఆరి as నేర్పరి, సొంపరి, &c.) గోజారు to trouble. సొంపారు to bloom, to be pretty. In such phrases as నూరారు వెయ్యారు the word అరు is not the numeral six, but is a form of అరు to be full; so వెయ్యారు means full thousand and నూరారు full a hundred. నూరారుముద్దులు a full hundred kisses. చేతులారంగ శివుని పూజింపడేని if he sacrifice not to Siva with his own hands. చేతులార రూకలు చెల్లిస్తిని I paid the money with my own hands. పని ఆరుమూడు అయినది the work is all in confusion, at sixes and sevens.

(p. 151) uzayabōḍa uzia-bōḍa. [H.] n. Starboard. కుడి పక్క (a sea phrase.)

(p. 237) katti katti. [Tel.] n. A knife. A sword. తీసినకత్తితీరు బిత్తలియై నిలిచినది she stood as a drawn sword. A measure of land, which differs in various districts. It is considered to be as much as a man can reap in one day. In the Government accounts a 'cutty' is rated at 40 acres and 14 గుంటలు (q. v.) This phrase, which means a 'sword of land' implies that this quantity of land was assigned to a family which furnished the feudal lord one fighting man. కత్తికట్టేదొర katti-kaṭṭē-dora. An officer, a gentleman who wears a sword. కత్తికాసు katti-kāsu. n. A carpenter's tool for squaring. కత్తిపిట్టి katti-piṭṭa. The Cuckoo called Hierococcyx varius. చిన్న కత్తిపిట్ట The Indian plaintive cuckoo, Cacomantis passcrinus. (F.B.I.) కత్తిపిడిక a basket in which a toddy drawer keeps his knives ఈండ్రవాని కత్తుల బుట్ట. కత్తిపీట katti-pīṭa. n. A large knife standing slantwise in a block of wood upon which vegetables are sliced. కత్తిబళ్లెము katti ballemu. A 'sword spear,' a scythe-like blade mounted as a spear.

(p. 253) karṇamu karṇamu. [Skt.] n. The ear. The helm of a ship చుక్కాని. కర్ణధారుడు karṇa-dhāruḍu. A helmsman or steers-man. ఓడనడుపువాడు. కర్ణపత్రము or కర్ణపూరము karṇa-patramu. n. A sort of earrings. చెవికమ్మ, పూగమ్మ. కర్ణమంత్రము karṇa-mantramu. n. A spell or prayer whispered in the ear of the a dying man. కర్ణలత an earning చవితమ్తె. కర్ణాకర్ణి karṇā-karṇi. n. From mouth to mouth. వినికివరుస. (Lit. from ear to ear--a phrase regarding news.)

(p. 261) kallōlamu kal-lōlamu. [Skt.] n. A surge, a billow. పెద్ద అల. గృహకల్లోలము family turmoil, household troubles. కల్లోలవతి or కల్లోలినని kallōla-vati. n. An eddying stream: a poetical phrase for a river. R. iii. 39. ఏరు, నది.

(p. 263) kavyamu kavvamu. [Tel.] n. A churning staff. కవ్వపుకొండ a phrase for Mount Mandara.

(p. 266) kākamu kākamu. [Skt.] n. A crow. కాకతాళీయము kāka-tāḷīyamu. n. Chance, casualty, accident. 'Like the crow and the palm fruit'--a phrase denoting coincidence (అవితర్కితసంభవము): as a palm fruit falling just when a crow has alighted: కాకతాళీయమైన sudden, opportune, unexpected. కాకతాళీయపత్ or కాకతాళీయ న్యాయముగా suddenly, casually, accidentally.

(p. 266) kākākṣinyāyamu kākākshi-nyāyamu. [Skt.] n. (In logic) An argument (zeugma) that cuts both ways. Lit. after the manner of a crow's eye. So called from a crow's peculiar manner of squinting at an object. కాకిచూపువలెనేదైన నొకపక్క కొరుగుట. This argument is also called అడ్డగోడమీది పిల్లి a cat on a partition wall. A Sanskrit phrase used in illustrating the applicability of one word in two or more senses. See Colebr, on Mitakshara. P. 358.

(p. 280) kāṣṭhamu kāsṭhamu. [Skt.] n. Wood. (In Telugu this is the usual phrase for the wood used in the funeral pile.) కాష్ఠగతాగ్ని latent heat. A quarter, region or airt. దిక్కు. A moment, a second. పదునెనిమిది రెప్పపాట్లకాలము.
