(p. 345) g or గా ga. The adverbial sign, for కాన్ as తిన్నగా correctly, slowly, gently, వంకరగా crookedly. It is added to the Infinitive in A, as చేయగ or చేయగా, చూడగ. It is also added to nouns to give them an adverbial force. పుష్పములను నీకు సాయకంబులుగ జేసె he provided thee with flowers for arrows. నల్లగనున్నది it is black. గ stands for 'గజము a yard. In prosody గ denotes గురువు a long syllable, and గా or గగము is a spondee. గ also stands for గద్య prose. In music గ is the note called mi in European music.

(p. 354) gaṇamu gaṇamu. [Skt.] n. A flock, multitude, or assemblage, a tribe, class or troop. వర్గము, సమూహము. A prosodial foot, such as భగణము a dactyl. గణములుకట్టు to scan. గణములు పోయినవి or తప్పినవి the metre is imperfect. A troop of inferior deities, considered as Siva's attendants, and under the special superintendence of Gaṇēsa: whence his name గణేశుడు, గణపతి or గణాధిపుడు. A body of troops consisting of 27 war-chariots, 27 elephants, 81 horses and 135 infantry men. గణార్చన gaṇārchana. n. Worship of the demigods attending on Siva.

(p. 381) guruvu or గురుడు guruvu. [Skt.] n. A teacher, a preceptor, a master, a superior, a learned man, a father. A title or name of Brihaspati, tutor of the Gods, who was the husband of Tāra. గురువారము. guru-vāramu. n. Thursday. దొంగలగురువు a master thief, a ringleader. గురువు guruvu. n. Greatness గౌరవము, weight భారము. పూర్వజన్మార్జిత భూరికర్మముల గుర్వణగించునా కొడుక రావయ్య, BD. iv. 218. A long syllable, in prosody. Fast running వేగపు పరుగు. adj. Heavy, weighty, great, large, bulky: difficult, arduous. Reverend, venerable. గురుకార్యము a weighty matter. గురువుగా or గుర్వుగా positively or greatly అధికముగా. 'సర్వమాన్యము నీకు గుర్వుగానిత్తు.' BD. iv. 490. గురువుతేరు guruvu-tēru. v. n. To swell,వులుపారు to run very fast వేగపు పరువుగాపారు. To excel అతిశయించు. గురుత్వము gurutvamu. n. Greatness, weight, importance. Esteem. Heaviness, or languor. గురునాథుడు guru-nādhuḍu. n. The name of a certain village god, whose image is usually a mere block of stone, under a tree.

(p. 425) cūrṇika chūrṇika. [Skt.] n. A sort of harmonious prose, not divided into prosodial feet, but with the unbroken sentence running on continously. గద్యభేదము.

(p. 456) chāndasa chhāndasa. [Skt.] adj. Free, subject to no rule, sacred: as the style of some ancient books which being inspired, the broken metres cannot be corrected according to prosody. ఛాందసము cḥānda-samu. n. Silliness, the stupidity of a mere bookworm, simplicity, awkwardness. That part of an almanac which lays down the (వైదికము) diurnal rites: ఛాందసుడు chhāndasuḍu. n. A textualist, a ritualist: శ్రోత్రియుడు. A mere silly book-worm: a monk.

(p. 497) t ta. The letter T pronounced as a pure dental. A feminine suffix as in చాకిత, వ్రేత. త in ordinary writing denotes తర్వాత afterwards. In prosody it stands for the foot called తగణము which consists of two long syllables followed by a short one as వంకాయ.

(p. 841) prastariñcu prastarinṭsu. [Skt.] v. n. To spread, extend, విస్తరించు. To arrange prosodial fect. ఛంధః ప్రస్తారముచేయు. ప్రస్తారము prastāramu. n. A canon, scheme, or formula. A diagram or figure used in magic. గణప్రస్తారము the combination of syllables in forming prosodial feet, ఛందశ్శాస్త్రప్రత్యయభేదము.

(p. 915) bh bha. [Skt.] n. The name of a Skt. letter, ఒక అక్షరము. భ or భగణము bha. n. In prosody, a dactyl or foot composed of a long syllable followed by two short ones of Bhārata.

(p. 1052) yakṣuḍu yakshuḍu. [Skt.] n. A demigod. దేవయోనివిశేషము, కుబేరాదియక్షజాతుడు. Kubēra, కుబేరుడు. యక్షకర్దమము yaksha-kardamamu. n. A perfume made of powdered sandalwood mixed with camphor, agallochum, musk, and saffron in various proportions. పరిమళద్రవ్యములు కలిపినచందనము. యక్షగానము yaksha-gānamu. n. A melody, a chant. Poetry written rather to suit an air than according to the strict rules of prosody. There are several poems written in this style as the సీతాకల్యాణము, ఉషాపరిణయము, గడుడాచలము, &c. యక్షాక్షి yaksh-ākshi. n. A thorny plant. Guilandina bonducella. శూకజంబుకాయాం, గచ్చ. యక్షిణి yakshini.n. An art by which events that have happened elsewhere are revealed, గతించిన వృత్తాంతమును తెలిపే ఒకవిద్య. A female fiend attached to the service of Durga, and frequently maintaining (like a sylph or fairy) intercourse with mortals. యక్షిణిపంపు bewitching, sorcery. మాంత్రికుడు పంపిన పనులు చేసే దయ్యము.

(p. 1059) r ra. [Tel.] n. The letter R, called రేఫ repha, or రకారము ra-kāramu. When it is a subjunct letter, it is written underneath and shaped, thus, ్ర or L, and is called krāvaṭi క్రావడి or క్రారవడి krāravaṭi; thus, కర్ర karra, వక రము rakramu. In many Telugu words this r is used optionally after the initial, as in మాను, పక్క, కింద, తోవ, సుక్కు which are, in bookish Telugu, written మ్రాను ప్రక్క.క్రింద. త్రోవ. స్రుక్కు respectively. The letter ర is sometimes inserted to prevent elision, as పొదరిల్లు, గంగిరెద్దు, బొమ్మరిల్లు, ఉస్సురనుచు. ర in prosody, stands, for రగణము, a foot composed of a short between two long syllables.

(p. 1095) lakṣaṇamu lakshaṇamu. [Skt.] n. A sign, mark, token. గురుతు. A symptom, an indication; a characteristic, attribute, quality; a predicate, any thing by which an object is designated, or distinguished. పీరు. A rule of art or science. విధి. The Science of Grammar, &c. వ్యాకరణాది శాస్త్రము. Perfection, comeliness, beauty, correctness, precision. వర్షలక్షణములు the signs of rain. జ్వర లక్షణములు the symptoms of fever. అక్షరలక్షణము the description of letters in grammar, i.e., Orthography. ఛందోలక్షణము prosody. ఆ రోగ లక్షణములను చెప్పుచున్నాను I will now describe the symptoms of that disease. లక్షణయుక్తమైన కావ్యము a classical poem, a book written according to the rules, లక్షణయా ḷakshaṇam-aina. adj. Hand-some, beautiful అందమైన లక్షణయా lakshaṇayā. adv. Metaphorically. లక్షము lakshamu. n. A butt, mark, or aim. గురి. లక్షించు or ఆలక్షించు lakshinṭsu. v. a. To aim at, to see, గురిపెట్టు, చూచు. లక్ష్మము lakṣhmamu. n. A mark, token, or sing. చిహ్నము, గురుతు 'మీనలక్ష్మాకృతి.' T. iii. 149.

(p. 1115) v va. [Tel.] The consonant V or W. As with h in English, v in Telugu is sometimes added in places where it does not occur, and dropped in places where it does occur by incorrect speakers or writers; e.g., ఒళ్లు is often pronounced and written వళ్లు and ఊరు, వూరు; while words like వెర్రి and వెచ్చము are pronounced and written ఎర్రి and ఎచ్చము. The initial V is also frequently changed into a vowel or a Y by vulgar speakers: e.g., ఏప or యేప for వేప. ఎట్టి or యెట్టి for వెట్టి. The initial P (in verse) is sometimes changed into V; thus వోయె (vōye) for పోయె (pōye) he went; వాపె (vāpe) for పాపె (pāpe) he removed. Sometimes the initial V changes into B, as బలె for వలె 'like.' 'దీపాంకురపఙ్క్తులంబలె.' Bhanumat. iv. 142. This change is caused by the preceding sunna: Sometimes in the second syllable G changes into V; as పగడము, పవడము. In prosody వ stands for వగణము an iambic; more usually written లగము. And in poems వ stands for వచనము prose.

(p. 1125) vaḍi vaḍi. [Tel.] n. Quickness, briskness, celerity, rapidity; sharpness, violence. శీఘ్రము. వేగము. Prowess, courage. శౌర్యము, క్షౌత్రము. Time, కాలము as in ఇంచుకనడి. కొంతవడి. పెద్దవడి. The twist of a cord. దారముపిరి. పురిబిగువు, పురిబిగువునపడుచిక్కు. (In prosody) rhyming syllables. కవిత్వమందయతి, పద్యయతి. plural వళ్లు. వడికాడు vaḍi-kāḍu.n. A quick or brave man. వేగముకలవాడు. శౌర్యవంతుడు. వడిగలతనము courage, bravery, వడిగలవానితనము, శౌర్యము. వడికొలుపు vaḍi-kolupu. v. a. To twist. మెలిపెట్టు, 'మొలకమీసలువడిగొల్పుమురువు నేర్చె.' T. ii. 73. To hasten, to cause to be quick. వేగముకలుగునట్లుచేయు. వడిగొను vaḍi-gonu. v. n. To become twisted, మెలిపడు. To be fast, వేగముకలుగు. వడిగల vaḍi-gala. adj. Quick, brisk, violent, clever, brave, వేగముగల, శూరత్వముగల. వాడు మంచివడి గలవాడు he is very quick or clever. adv. Quickly, freshly, త్వరగా, పురిగొని. 'పడుచులేచుచుడు గచువడిగొంచొదవెడుకినుకల గడుబెట్టిదముగ.' M. V. ii. 348. వడిపడు vaḍi-paḍu. v. n. To be troubled, afflicted, oppressed; to toil. వడివెట్టు or వడివేయు vaḍi-peṭṭu. v. a. To twist. మెలిపెట్టు, నులుము. 'తే గీ అలుకచేనుండబుగ్గలునులిచితిట్టి తొడలువడిపెట్టి కోదండమమరగట్టి రెట్టతెగగట్టి.' H. ii. 180. To trouble, annoy, persecute. బాధపెట్టు. వడిసుడి vaḍi-suḍi. n. A whirlpool. ఆవర్తము.

(p. 1221) vēdamu vēdamu. [Skt. √ vid. to know.] n. Knowledge, art, science, విద్య, జ్ఞానము. Divine knowledge or science, the sacred or inspired writings. The Veda or sacred books of the Hindus. బ్రహ్మముఖమందు పుట్టినచదువు, శ్రుతి, శాస్త్రము. వాడు చెప్పినది వేదము all he said was taken for gospel. వేదమూర్తులైన his reverence, his holiness, a title given to learned theologians. ధనుర్వేదము the art of the bow, i.e., archery. వేదశాస్త్రము vēda-ṣāṣtramu. n. The Vedanta or philosophical portion of the Hindu Scriptures. వేదాంతము. వేదాంగములు vēd-āngamulu. n. plu. The sciences dependant on or auxiliary to the Vēdas. వ్యాకరణాదులైన షట్ఛాస్త్రములు. They are శిక్ష, the science of pronounciation and articulation, కల్పము the detail of religious ceremonies, వ్యాకరణము grammar, ఛందస్సు prosody, జ్యోతిషము astronomy, నిరుక్తి the explanation of the difficult or obscure words and phrases that occur in the Vedas. వేదాంతము vēd-āntamu. n. The theological part of the Vedas, i.e., the Upanishads, ఉపనిషత్తులు. A name given to the Advaita system of philosophy. వేదాంతి vēd-ānṭi. n. A follower of the Vedanta philosophy, వేదాంతశాస్త్రమును చదివినవాడు, వేదాంతము తెలిసినవాడు. A bachelor, బ్రహ్మచారి.
