(p. 12) antastu antastu. [Tel.] n. A secret place a hiding place, a corner. A square compartment. తొట్టికట్టు A storey, or range, one above another, as the decks of a ship. రెండు అంతస్తుల యిల్లు a two storeyed house. 'ఎరుగవలసిన యంతస్తులెల్లజూచె.' పర.4.అ. 'అంతఃపురమువాసి యల్లననివలి యంతస్తునకు వచ్చునంతటిలోన.' విష్ణు.ఉ. 4. అ.

(p. 37) aḍugu aḍugu. [Tel.] n. The foot, the footstep, a pace, step, the bottom, basis. A foot in length containing twelve inches. A line of verse. Thus four 'feet' make one stanza, or quatrain. చెట్టు అడుగు the foot of a tree. అడుగురాయి a stone at the bottom కొండ అడుగుననుండే ఊరు a village at the foot of a mountain. ఆ కథను అడుగునుంచి చెప్పు tell the story from the beginning. కుండ అడుగు the bottom of a pot. అడుగంటకోయు to cut off by the root. అడుగుతో పెళ్లగించు to eradicate, to root out. అడుగారిపోవు to be utterly ruined. నా మాటకు అడుగుదాటకు do not transgress my command. వాని అడుగుల జాడ పట్టుకొని పోయినారు they traced his footsteps and followed him. అడుగడుగున or అడుగడుగునకు step by step, now and then, often. అన్నము అడుగంటినది the rice has burnt at the bottom of the pot.

(p. 41) ativāsamu ati-vāsamu. [Skt.] The fast observed on the day preceding the ceremony in which oblations are presented to the manes of departed ancestors. శ్రాద్ధమునకు ముందు ఒక్క ప్రొద్దు ఉండే దినము.

(p. 105) ā The broad vowel A, as in arm, father. [The Secondary form of this letter is -- which is a modified form of the upright stroke | used to denote the long sound of a in Sanskrit. [The ingenuity of the inventors of the Indian Alphabets is shown by the way in which they formed the long vowels out of the short ones by giving a slightly different turn to their forms. See Taylor.] 2. The demonstrative sign, as ఆ పని that act, ఆ కథలు those stories, ఆ వెనుక after that, ఆ తెల్లవారి next morning. ఆ ఆ (or ఆయా) యిండ్లలో in the various houses. 3. As a contraction ఆ stands for ఆశ్వాసము chapter; also for a certain verse ఆటవెలడి of a certain metre. 4. As a Sanskrit prefix it means Upto, Until, As far as; as ఆచంద్రార్కము or ఆచంద్రతారకము as long as the moon and the sun or stars last. ఆజానువు to the knee. అపాదమత్తకము. from head to foot. ఆబాలగోపాలము up to or including the children and the shepherds. ఆసముద్రము as far as the sea. See ఆకంఠము and ఆచండాలము. 5. A Telugu affix denoting question, or surprise as అతడా (is it) he? 6. An interjection ఆ, or ఆ ఆ, or ఆహ Yes, Aye: or Ah! A. iv. 5.

(p. 109) ākhya ākhya. [Skt.] n. A name, or appellation. పేరు. అఖ్యాత ākhyāta. n. The speaker. చెప్పెడువాడు. ఆఖ్యాతము ākhyātamu. adj. Said, spoken, rehearsed. ఆఖ్యానము ākyānamu. n. Telling. చెప్పుట An episode of a book, a tale or fable, an ancient story. ఆఖ్యేయము ākhyēyamu. adj. Fit to be said or rehearsed.

(p. 118) āmudamu āṃudamu. [Tel.] n. Castor oil. ఆముదములు castor oil seeds. ఆముదపు చెట్టు āmudapu-cheṭṭu. n. The castor oil tree, palma christi, or, ricinus communis. పెద్దాముదము a species or castor oil used for lamps. చిట్టి ఆముదము a more gentle purging oil used for infants. కొండ ఆముదము, or అడవి ఆముదము or నేపాళము a plant, Baliospermum montunum (Watts.)

(p. 126) āḷvāru āḷvāru. [Drav.] n. A Vaishnava name for a saint. The Alwars or saints were twelve in number and are considerd to have been incarnations of the attendants, arms, or insignia of Vishnu: each of them wrote a portion of the 'Dravida Prabandham,' or 'Tamil Veda' help in greater veneration that the original Sanskrit Veda, of which it is, in fact, an ancient Tamil translation (Ellis.) The పరమయోగివిలాసము is a history of these personages. A hawk is sometimes called గరుడాళ్వారు.

(p. 136) itihāsamu iti-hāsamu. [Skt.] n. Ancient story, legend. History: traditional accounts of former events: heroic history, such as the Mahābhārata and the Rāmāyaṇa. పూర్వపు కథ.

(p. 144) īda īda. [Tel.] n. Wind, cold wind. ఈద గాలి or ఈదరగాలి or ఈదురగాలి a strong, cold wind; a storm. పెద్ద చలిగాలి. ఈదర īdara. adj. Stormy, violent.

(p. 149) uggu uggu. [Tel.] n. A mixture of castor oil and breastmilk given to infants. A wrinkle or plait in cloth. మడత. Confusion. ఉగ్గుపడు uggu-paḍu. v. i. To form into a fold. ముడతపడు. ఉగ్గులుపారు uggulu-pāru. v. n. To run into a knot in spinning or twisting, to be entangled, to run into wrinkles. మెలిపడు. To be confused or confounded.

(p. 150) ugrāṇamu ugrāṇamu. [Tel.] n. A store house: a pantry, a treasury. ఉగ్రాణవు నాడు, ఉగ్రాణి, ఉగ్రాణికుడు a steward, a butler, a storekeeper, a treasurer.

(p. 155) uttariñcu uttarinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To cross or pass over. To amputate: to divide cloth into separate pieces, to refund, repay, restore. ఉత్తారకుడు uttārakuḍu. n. One who helps one to cross. A saviour, a deliverer. దాటించువాడు; రక్షకుడు.

(p. 159) uddhariñcu ud-dharinṭsu. [Skt.] v. a. To raise, lift, set up, support, up-hold, re-establish, restore, rescue, deliver, preserve, protect. పైకెత్తు, కాపాడు. వేదములనుద్ధరించు to restore the Vedas. సంసారమునుద్ధరించు to support the family. 'నగరగలిసిన గ్రామము నుద్ధరించినాడు' he saved the village which had been sequestrated.

(p. 159) uddhāraṇamu or ఉద్ధారణ or ఉద్ధారము ud-dhāraṇamu. [Skt.] n. Lifting up. Protection. Sustaining. Rescuing, delivering, releasing, restoring. మతోద్ధారణచేయు to re-establish a religion. ఉద్ధారాంశము a share granted to the man who re-established something that has fallen into decay. పోయినదానిని మళ్లీ సాధించినవానికిచ్చే విశేష భాగము. ఉద్ధారము చేయు to sustain: support. ఉద్ధారకుడు ud-dhārakuḍu. n. He who sustains or nourishes, a saviour, a redeemer రక్షకుడు.
