A name given in grammar to the four consonants y,r,l,v,య, ర, ల, వ, which are considered by the Sanskrit Grammarians to be semi-vowels, and 'to be intermediate between vowels and consonants, or because they stand between the consonants and the sibilants in the alphabet.' VI. 15. the five elements, ether, wind, fire, water, and earth have each one attribute (or quality) more than the one next named. Earth has five qualities as weight, taste, extension, &c., water has only four, fire has only three, &c. Thus each class is more by one than the next. ఏకోత్తరవృద్ధి the addition of one: increase by one unit: one more. ఏకోత్తరదశము one hundred and one.

Caustic, lunar caustic. కారము చచ్చినపొగాకు tobacco devoid of flavour. కారము చచ్చినసున్నము lime devoid of heat. కారముగలసున్నము sharp lime. adj. Pungent, hot to the taste. A particle added to a letter in naming it. Thus కకారము the letter K. An affix denoting, making or doing, thus: ఝణఝణత్కారము resounding, making a ringing sound.
