(p. 1) a a.1. The first letter of the Telugu alphabet as of many others. Hence the phrase అ ఆలు formed like the word 'alphabet' from the first two letters in the series, means the whole of the Tel. alphabet. See ఓనమాలు and వర్ణమాల. అకారము is the letter or sound of a, the term కారము being added to each letter in naming it. అకారాదిగా beginning with the letter అ seriatim, i.e., in alphabetical order. The letter అ has the same shape as the Eng. 'A' reversed. but is quite rounded off, and represents like its Semitic prototype 'the horns of an ox' (Taylor.) The stroke / called తలకట్టు tala-kaṭṭu and placed over many consonants is popularly, though by mistake as pointed out by Burnell, taken to be the secondary form of అ. The letter అ has the same sound as the Eng. a in 'around.' 'delta','Victoria. ' It is the 'low-back-wide vowel formed by the jaws, pharynx and lips wide open' and is supposed to be inherent in consonants -- e. g., in బ b, ల l, జ j.

(p. 315) koṇḍra konḍra. [Tel.] n. A field. The space included in the widest turn of the plough. ఎదురుదున్ని మళ్లించిన నడినేల. కొండ్రకైదువు a plough నాగలి. కొండ్రచేసికొను konḍra-chēsi-konu. v. a. To cultivate.

(p. 346) gaṅgāḷamu gangāḷamu. [Tel.] n. A large wide mouthed metal jar for holding water.

(p. 555) tēlu tēlu. [Tel.] v. n. To float. To swim. To bathe. To succeed, be done, be settled, ratified, take place. To terminate, end, blow over or end (as a storm,) swell, ripen (as a boil,) to emerge, పొడచూపు To fall clear of, so as not to hit. To clear up, become known, or ascertained, be decided, as a question or doubt. To be found, come to light, result, come to pass, to be evident or revealed. To go off or depart, as sleep, sickness, &c. To escape or get off. నేను తేలే ఉపాయము ఇది this is the plan to save myself. ఏ సముద్రమందు పడవేసినా ఇది తేలును in whatever sea you place this boat it will float, i.e., this must prosper whatever may happen. తేలబలుకు (A. iv. 306.) to speak clearly. తేలిన swelling ఉబికిన; large. తేల్చి పలుకు to accent softly, to use the soft accent instead of the harsh one; as పోతన Pōtana for పోతన్న Pōtanna, and ఇపుడు ipuḍu for ఇప్పుడు ippuḍu. తేలదీయు to haul ashore, to pull out or drag out. తేలగిల్లు or తేలగిలబడు tēla-gillu. v. n. To rise to the top. పైకితేలు. To roll or swim, as the eyes. తేలగింపు swimming of the eyes. తేలవేయు tēla-vēyu. v. a. To open (the eyes) wide. కండ్లుతేలవేయు to stop winking తేలచేప tēla-chēpa. n. A kind of fish. H. iv. 225. తేలాడు tēlāḍu. (తేలి+ఆడు.) v. n. To float. తేలు, తేలిఆడు. తేలించు tēlintsu. (causal of తేలు) v. a. To cause to float. To bring up or produce. To accomplish, do, achieve, perform. To fulfil. To glance, as applied to the eyes. తేల్చిపోయు to pour in loosely or lightly. లాలించితేలించు to fondle and please. తేలిక tēlika. n. Lightness, ease. లఘుత్వము. adj. Easy, simple, light. బరువులేని. వానికి ఇప్పుడు ఒళ్లు తేలికగా నున్నది he is well. తేలుపారు tēlu-p-āru. v. n. To arise, to be born పుట్టు.

(p. 585) dāka dāka. [Tel.] n. A pot with a wide mouth. బోగోణి, మూతివేడల్పుగల అటిక. Also, a vine (corruption of ద్రాక్ష.) దాక or దాకా affix. Until, as long as, about. As far as, as much as, to the extent of, దనుక. నెలదినములదాక for a month. ఇంతదాక until now, before this. ఎందాక how long. పదిదాక as many as ten, about ten. The irregular inflection is దాకటి. ఇందాకటి వ్యాజ్యము the late dispute. ఇందాకటిజాబు his recent letter. ఇందాకటివాడు the man who here till now.

(p. 591) dikku dikku. [Skt.] n. A quarter, part, side, direction. దిశ. An airt or point of the compass. The ten directions named in Hindu books are the four points. N. E. S. W. and the intermediate four: N.-E. (ఈశాన్యమూల) S.-E. (ఆగ్నేయమూల) S.-W. (నైరృతిమూల,) N.-W. (వాయవ్యమూల) to which are added the Zenith and Nadir. దిక్కులుమ్రోయగా while the heavens resounded. Quarter, shelter, asylum, refuge, protection, patronage, శరణము. దిక్కులేని, దిక్కుమాలిన or దిక్కేదిన helpless, resourceless, devoid of any protector; also vile, abominable. దిక్కుగలచోటు a refuge. దిగ్విమల స్వరూపుడై the loveliest in the world. దిక్పతి or దిక్పాలుడు dik-pati. n. A demigod who rules one airt or point of the compass; the regent or genius that governs that quarter. ఈశానాదిదిక్పాలురు the genii of the north-east and other directions దిక్కమొగములు or దిక్కామొగములు dikka-mogamulu. [from దిక్కు+ముఖము.] n. Faces turned in every direction. People that flee in all directions through fear, భయముచేత దిక్కున కొక్కరుగా పోయినవారు. దిక్కా మొగముగా timidly, భీతిచే బెదరియుండినట్లుగా. దిక్కరి dik-kari. (దిక్+కరి.) n. One of the mythica, elephants that support the corners of the world. దిగంతము dig-antamu. (దిక్+అంతము.) n. An end of the earth. దిగంతఖ్యాతి world wide fame. దిగంబరుడు dig-ambaruḍu. (దిక్+అంబరుడు.) adj. Lit. 'Sky vested,' having the air as a robe. Naked, stark-naked, undraped. దిసమొలవాడు. n. An epithet of Siva. దిగంబరురాలు she who is naked. దిగ్గజము dig-gajamu. n. One of the eight elephants (గజ) the guard the cardinal points (దిక్కులు) of the world. A poetical phrase answering to the poles of heaven. దిగ్గజములుమ్రోయ making the welkin ring. కవిదిగ్గజము a leading or classical author. దిగ్బంధము dig-bandhamu. n. A magic rite, restraining by spells the influence of certain stars. cf. Job. XXXVIII. 31. దిగ్భ్రమము dig-bhramamu. n. Giddiness, stupor, amazement. దిక్కులతబ్బిబ్బు, భ్రమము. దిగ్బ్రమితాత్ముడై bewildered, horrified, amazed. దిగ్గిజయము dig-vijayamu. n. Dominion, empire. Universal conquest. A royal progress or tour. దిగ్మండలము or దిగ్మండలి dig-mandalamu. n. The horizon.

(p. 807) potti potti. [Tel.] n. A thin soft, old cloth, మెత్తని సన్నని పాత వస్త్రము. An integument, coat; skin, bark. నార, పట్ట. కొబ్బరిగల మొదలైనవారిని పొదిగియుండేది. Also, a torch, దివిటీ. పోకపొత్తి the coat or skin covering the upper part of an areca tree. అరిటిపొత్తి the coat or skin on a plantain tree. పొడుముపొత్తి a snuff box, (literally, a piece of bark folded to contain snuff.) పొత్తి or పొత్తిగుడ్డ baby linen. పొత్తినూలు fibres used in garments made of bark. M. XII. vi. 221. పొత్తిపంచ bombasine cloth, woven of silk mixed with cotton. పొత్తిక pottika. n. Same as పొత్తి. Doll's clothes, a gaudy dress for an idol or for a little girl. 'బొమ్మపొత్తికలడిగితికొమ్మ యిందమనుచునిచ్చె తాదెచ్చిన యుంబరములు.' M. IV. v. 308. పొత్తికడుపు potti-kaḍupu. n. The abdomen, or belly below the navel. వస్తి, క్రీగడుపు. పొత్తిగడ్డ potti-gaḍḍa. n. A certain medicinal root called కరికారి, విశల్య, పొత్తిదుంప. పొత్తిచీర potti-chīra. n. Cloth made from the fibres of the bark of certain trees. నారచీర. పొత్తితామర potti-tāmara. n. A species of the lotus flower which does not open wide, ముడుగుతామర, నమస్కారి. పొత్తినూలు potti-nūlu. n. Silk thread. పొత్తినూలికాయ or పొత్తినూలిగూడు potti-nūli-kāya. n. A cocoon. పొత్తిలి pottili. n. Baby linen. పొత్తిగుడ్డలు. 'లీలబొత్తిలిమీద లేచి కుర్చుండుచో తద్దయునొక క్రొత్తముద్దుచెలువు.' KP. vi. 207. పొత్తిలి సొర or నల్లదిండి pottili-sora. n. A kind of gourd, Rhynchobatus ancylostomus.

(p. 825) pracuramu prachuramu. [Skt.] adj. Excessive, much, many. అధికము. మిక్కుటము. Public, notorious. ఆ సంగతి నిండా ప్రచురమైనది that matter became widely known. ఈ మాటను ప్రచురము చేయకు do not let this become public. ప్రచురించు prachurinṭsu. v. a. To publish, make known.

(p. 1040) moppe or మొప్పియ moppe. [Tel.] n. An idiot, a head-strong, obstinate fool. మూర్ఖుడు, మూర్ఖురాలు. మొప్పెకుమూరెడు నోరు a fool has a mouth a cubit wide. adj. Stiff, బండయైన. 'మొప్పెశరీరము.' భల్లా. iv. మొప్పెతనము moppe-tanamu. n. Idiocy, stubbornness, pertness. శాంఠ్యము, మూర్ఖత్వము.

(p. 1167) viccu vitsṭsu. [Tel.] v. n. To become open or loose, to burst asunder, as a ripe fruit, to be cracked, split or broken, to be dispersed. విరియు, వికసించు, వీడు, చీలు. 'మబ్బొకయించుకవిప్పవిచ్చుమొగ్గయి మరిపారిపోదురు సమస్తదిశాగతులైనయధ్వగుల్.' A. iv. 170. మొగ్గవిచ్చినది the bud opened. దండువిచ్చి యథాయథలైపోయినది the army broke up and every man went his way. ఆ గోడ విచ్చినది a crack has opened in the wall. ఆ కుండ విచ్చినది the pot cracked. మూసలో లోహముకరిగి కన్ను విచ్చి అడుగునప్పుడు when the melted metal looks quite clear. v. a. 'మేడిపండుచూడ మేలిమైయుండును పొట్టవిచ్చి చూడ పురుగులుండు.' Vema. 174. విచ్చు viṭsṭsu. n. The act of being scattered or dispersed, చెల్లాచెదరగుట. adj. Scattered, scattering. చెల్లాచెదరైన. చెల్లా చెదరుచేయునట్టు. విచ్చుకత్తి viṭsṭsu-katti. n. A drawn sword, ఒరదూసినకత్తి. విచ్చుటాకు viṭsṭsu-ṭ-āku. n. A coloured palmyra leaf rolled up and put in the pierced ears of women, in order to widen the bore for an earring. చెవ్వాకు. విచ్చుమొగ్గ viṭsṭsu-mogga. n. An opening bud, విరియుమొగ్గ.

To open, untie, loose. ముడివిప్పు to unite a knot. కథను విప్పు to solve a riddle. ఆ సంగతిని విప్పి చెప్పినాడు he explained the matter clearly. కంకణాలు విప్పేదాకా until the marriage was over. n.
