(p. 21) akṣaramu aksharamu. [Skt. lit Eternal. imperishable.] n. A letter, a single syllable, a character of the alphabet, hand writing. A single syllable, whether of one letter or more. Thus the word సంస్కృతం Sam-skru-tam is termed a word of three letters. ఏకాక్షరము a monosyllable. సంయుక్తాక్షరము two or more letters united in one syllable, as స్త్రీ wherein four letters are united. త్య్రక్షరి try-ak-shari; the sacred or mystic syllable (ఓం AUM, or O'M a name of the Deity) that contains three letters. అక్షరజ్ఞుడు a man of letters. అక్షరాభ్యాసము beginning to learn the alphabet or the first principles of a language; మంత్రాక్షరము a cypher of syllable used in magic. ఇది ఆయన అక్షరము కాదు this is not his handwriting. నీవద్ద అప్పుగా తీసుకొన్న రూ 300 అక్షరాల మున్నూరు రూపాయీలు i.e., 'Rs. 300 (three hundred Rupees.)' here the same sum is denoted in writing as well as in figures. వాడు నిరక్షరకుక్షి he is an illiterate man. వానికి నోట్లో అక్షరాలు లేచియున్నవి his mouth is inflammed. అక్షరవిన్యాసము, the array of letters, writing.

(p. 70) abhiyōgamu abhi-yōgamu. [Skt.] n. Application, strong effort; challenging to fight. అభియోగపత్రము a complaint made in writing, a plaint. అభియోగి abhi-yōgi. [Skt.] n. A plaintiff, an enemy.

(p. 120) āraṇḍakamu āraṇḍakamụ. [Skt.] n. The art of writing in cypher.

(p. 122) āremu āremu. [Mahr.] n. The name for Mahratta. ఆరెకాపులు a certain class of farmers. ఆరెలిపి Mahratta writing ఆరెలెక్కలు accounts written in Mahratta. ఆరెము or ఆరెభాష The Mahratta language. 'అరబిపారని గుజరాతియారెమ చ్చ తెనుగుకన్నోజ మొదలుగా దెలిసివ్రాయు దారిగన్నట్టివాడు.' య. i.

(p. 146) īṣika īshika. [Skt.] n. A reed for writing, a painter's bush, a pencil. The eyeball of an elephant.

(p. 147) u u. [Tel. In common writing the vowel ఉ is shaped like ర. Compare with this the Kanarese ఉ and the Skt. ఉ and Eng. U and W, all having the same origin.] The vowel U, as sounded in put, as in oo foot. Many Telugu words use A or U at pleasure: particularly in the second syllable, thus: వాలుగ or వాలగ, పరచు or పరుచు, కరగు or వరస or వరుస, అటక or అటుక, తరము or తరుము, పలకరించు or పలుకరించు. If one of these forms does not occur we must look for the word the other spelling.

(p. 149) uggaḍiñcu uggaḍinṭsu. [Tel.] v. a. To sound. మ్రోగు, శబ్దించు. To use, to utter (language or expression.) To remember, bring to mind. A village clerk, a writer, an accountant. వాడు కూత కరణముగాని వ్రాతకరణముకాడు he has talents for speaking but not for writing. స్థలకరణము the registrar of a district. కరణము n. Instrument, means. కొరముట్టు. An organ of sense. ఇంద్రియము.
