(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 194) ēkamu ēkamu. [Skt.] pron. One. adj. Sole, single, only, general, universal, uniform, combined, matchless, unequalled, chief. Joined, combined. ఏకదీక్షగా unintermittingly, incessantly. ఏకముగా all at once, unitedly. ఏకతిరగడము ceaseless roaming. అతడు ఏకరీతిని ఉండే మనిషి he is a regular or steady person. రాత్రి యేకముగా మెరిసినది it lightened incessantly all night. ఏకము చేయు ēkamu-chēyu. v. a. To make one, unite, gather together. ఏకకాలంబున at one time, simultaneously. ఏకకాలీనుడు ēka-kālīnuḍu. n. A contemporary. వారున్ను వీరున్ను ఏకకాలీనులైనందున as these men were contemporaries: ఏకకుండలుడు ēka-kuṇḍaluḍu. [lit. Having one earring] n. An epithet of Kubera. ఏకగర్భజనితులు ēka-garbha-janitulu. adj. Uterine, of the full blood. అతడున్ను నేనున్ను ఏకగర్భజనితులము గనుక as he and I are sons of the same parents or uterine brothers. ఏకగ్రీవము ēka-grīvamu. adj. Unanimous, joint. ఏకగ్రీవముగా unanimously, jointly. ఏకచక్రాధిపతి, or ఏకఛత్రాధిపతి ēka-chakrādhipati. n. A sole ruler, an absolute monarch. ఏకచింత one sole or engrossing thought or pursuit. ఏకనిష్ఠగా ēka-nishṭha-gā. adv. With a single eye or intent, resolutely, faithfully, thoroughly, downright. ఏకపత్నీవ్రతుడు ēka-patnī-vratuḍu. n. A monogamist, a man with one wife. ఏకబోగ్రామము ēka-bhōga-grāmamu. n. A village held by one owner, or tenant. ఏకమనస్కులై ēka-manaṣkulai. adv. With fixed attention, with a single heart. అందరు ఏకమైన నా మీద పడ్డారు they fell upon me in a body. ఏకవర్ణముగానున్నది it is all of one sort or colour. భువనేకసుందరి an unrivalled beauty. ఏకశిలానగరము ēka-ṣilā-nagaramu. n. (lit. One stone-town.) A town built near a single rock or hill. The Skt. translation of ఒరంగల్లు Warungul a town in the Nizam's Territories. ఏకాధిష్ఠతము ēkā-dishṭhitamu. adj. In one hand: in one person's sole power. M. I. ii. 200.

(p. 230) kaṭika or కటికి kaṭika. [Tel.] adj. Mere. quite, entire, total, downright, cruel, unfeeling, horrid. కటికపని butchery. కటికచీకటి utter or thick darkness. నిన్నంతా నేను కటికపస్తు ఉంటిని all yesterday I was absolutely starving. కటిక్కన or కటిక్కిన kaṭikkana. adv,. Sharply, smartly, without making any allowance, కటిక or కటికవాడు kaṭika n. A butcher. మాంసమమ్మువాడు.

(p. 250) karaṇamu karaṇamu. [Skt.] n. A village clerk, a writer, an accountant. వాడు కూత కరణముగాని వ్రాతకరణముకాడు he has talents for speaking but not for writing. స్థలకరణము the registrar of a district. కరణము n. Instrument, means. కొరముట్టు. An organ of sense. ఇంద్రియము. Marking or causing, as in ప్రియంకరణము endearing. స్థూలంకరణము fattening, శుభగంకరణము fortunate. కరణచతుష్టయము the mind, intellect, volition and self-consciousness. మనోబుద్ధిచిత్తాహంకారములు. కరణత్రయము thought, word and deed. మనస్సు. వాక్కు, కర్మము. త్రికరణశుద్ధిగా completely, absolutely, entirely. కరణీయము karaṇīyamu. adj. (p. 404) cakramu chakramu. [Skt.] n. A wheel. A discuss or sharp-edged plate of steel, hurled at a foe like a quoit: the thunderbolt or weapon of Vishṇu. A realm, region. రాష్ట్రము. A figure, diagram or sign in astrology. The name of a coin. The bird called చక్రవాకము. A region or division of the body. చక్రధరుడు or చక్రపాణి Vishṇu. కటి or కటిచక్రము the loins, the region of the lions. అష్టకోణచక్రము an octagon. చక్రవర్తి chakra-varti.. n. An emperor or sovereign. రారాజు, సార్వభౌముడు. చక్రవర్తిని chakra-vartini. n. An empress. సార్వభౌమురాలు. చక్రవాకము chakra-vākamu. n. The Brahminy-duck or Ruddy Casarca rotila (F.B.I.) జక్కవపక్షి. The poetical swan, always described as being in pairs, to which poets liken fair breasts. చక్రవాళము chakravāḷamu. n. A range of mountains supposed to encircle the earth. చుట్టుకొండ. చక్రవృద్ధి chakra-vṛiddhi. n. Compound interest వడ్డికివడ్డి. చక్రాంకనము or చక్రాంకితములు or చక్రాంకములు chakrānkanamu. n. Marks branded on the front of the shoulders, representing the disc and shell of Vishṇu. (It is a rite similar to absolution.) చక్రాంగము chakrāngamu. n. A swan. హంస. చక్రాంగి a female swan. చక్రి chakri. n. The discus-wielder, i.e., Vishṇu. A snake, because rolled in a ring. A potter, because using a wheel.

(p. 693) pacci pachchi. [Tel.] adj. Raw, unripe. ముదరిని, పండని. Unbaked, unburnt, కాలని, as పచ్చికుండ. Unboiled, ఉడుకని, as పచ్చిపులుసు. Green, not dry, (as firewood,) ఎండని. Unchred (as a hide,) raw, sore, tender, as పచ్చిపుండు. Colloquially it means palpable, gross, downright, absolute, rank, arrant, open, unveiled, unblushing, board, coarse. పచ్చిమిరపకాయలు green chillies. పచ్చివిషము rank poison. పచ్చికస్తురి వీణె an unsunned or unbroached scent bottle. పచ్చికర్ర a green stick. పచ్చి ఒళ్లుగల convalescent. 'పచ్చిబడి యలనతని బడగొట్టుడనుచు.' Charit. i. 2223. పచ్చి నెత్తురు blood just shed. 'వచ్చుముంగిసజూచి వసుధేశపత్ని, పచ్చినెత్తురుమూతి పరికించితనదు.' Sāranga D. v. 280. పచ్చిక pachhika. (పచ్చి+కలది.) n. Grass. పచ్చగడ్డి. పచ్చికతేలేదు the grass has not brought. పచ్చికపట్టు a grassy spot, a meadow, a lawn, a green. పచ్చితేరు pachchi-tēru. v. n. To become green, పచ్చిఅగు.

(p. 713) paramamu paramamu. [Skt.] adj. Best, supreme, most excellent, principal, chief. ఉత్కృష్టము, ప్రధానము పరమగురువు the supreme teacher. పరమపతివ్రత the most virtuous woman. పరమపతివ్రత the most virtuous woman. పరమపదము or పరంపదము parama-padamu. n. Heaven. మోక్షము. పరమపదించు or పరంపదించు parama-padinṭsu. v. n. To depart to bliss, to die, to expire. పరమలబ్ధుడు a great miser. పరమపావనుడు the great purifier, he who wholly sanctifies. పరమహంస an ascetic recluse, ఉత్తమ పదమునొందిన సన్యాసి. పరమయోగి an absolute ascetic. An atom, the invisible base of all aggregate bodies. సూక్ష్మములకంటె సూక్ష్మమైన అణువు. పరమాత్మ. పరమాత్ముడు or పరమము param-ātma. n. The Supreme Being, considered as the soul of the universe. పరబ్రహ్మము. పరమార్థము param-ārthamu. n. The great object of summum bonum of life. Bliss, heaven. పరమాన్నము param-ānnamu. n. Rice pudding, milk boiled with rice and sugar. పాయసము. పరమేశ్వరుడు param-ēṣvaruḍu. n. The Supreme, Lord One of the names of Siva, శివుడు. పరమేష్ఠి param-ēshṭhi. n. Bramha, the Creator. బ్రహ్మ.

(p. 847) prāyamu prāyamu. [Skt.] n. Age, time of life, జీవితకాలము, ఈడు, వయస్సు. Puberty, youth, prime, bloom. యౌవనము. లేప్రాయము fresh age. ప్రాయపువాడు a young man. ప్రాయపుది a young woman. A preparation for dying దేహత్యాగార్థివ్రతము, ప్రాయోపదేశము. Death, చావు. Exceeding much, a multitude, సమూహము, బాహుళ్యము. adj. (used in composition.) like, resembling, సమానము. పశుప్రాయుడు a brutish man. మృతప్రాయుడు one who is as good as dead. అది వానికి తృణప్రాయము he values it no more than a straw వానికి అబద్ధము తీర్థప్రాయము telling lies is all his delight. ప్రాయశః prāyaṣah adv. Frequently, for the most part. బహుశా. ప్రాయశ్చిత్తము prāyaṣ -chittamu. n. Expiation, propitiation, penance, absolution, recompense, retribution, పాపరిహారముకొరకు చేయుకర్మము. జీవప్రాయశ్చిత్తము certain expiatory ceremonies performed over a dying person. తనకొమారునికి ప్రాయశ్చిత్తము చేయించినాడు he had his son purified by expiatory rites. ప్రాయోపవేశము or ప్రాణాచారము prāy-ōpavēṣamu. n. Fasting in order to die, starving to death voluntarily. పస్తుపడియుండి ప్రాణమును విడిచిపెట్టడమనేవ్రతము. ప్రాయోపవేశముచేయు or ప్రాణాచారముచేయు prāy-opavēṣamu-chēyu v. n. To meet death by fasting in fulfilment of a vow.

(p. 1017) mūrti mūrti. [Skt.] n. The body, శరీరము. A figure, form, body in general, or any definite shape, or image. ప్రతిమ. Matter, substance, a divine hypostasis or person. త్రిమూర్తులు the Hindu Triad, i.e., Brahma, Vishnu, and Siva. కృష్ణముర్తి the god Krishna, or an image of Krishna. అతడు న్యాయముర్తి he is justice in human form. వాడు భీకరమూర్తి he is an absolute fright or horrible figure. వాడు సౌందర్య మూర్తియైయుండెను he was beauty personified. వాడు పాపమూర్తి he was all sin. మూర్తివంతుడు mūrti-mantuḍu. n. One who has bodily form. శరీరి. మూర్తిమత్ mūrti-mat. adj. Material, corporeal, substantial, soild, having shape. మూర్తీకరించు mūrti-karinṭsu. v. n. The great red custard apple called Bullock's Heart or Sweet sop, Anona reticulata. The true Custard apple of the West Indies (Watts.) See సీతాఫలము. రామబాణము rāma-bāṇamu. n. A bookworm (tinea) Lit. the arrow of the hero Rāma; as these worms spare no volume whatever, being indiscriminate in destruction; equivalent to 'the holts of Jove.' పుస్తకములను కొట్టేపురుగు. రామభజన rāma-bhajana. n. Worship of Rama, chanting or reciting the Rāmāyana. రామము rāmamu. n. A large species of deer. పెద్దదుప్పి. రామములక rāma-mulaka. n. A small plant resembling the brinjal with a white fruit. రామరామ rāma-rāma. interj. Alas! alas! రాములు rāmalu. n. plu. A sort of fish. మత్స్యభేదములు. రామవరము or రామవాక్యము rāma-varamu. n. Lit. the word of Rāma, a phrase for a sacred promise, an irrevocable word, absolute truth. 'God's truth.' రామసాగరములు rāma-sāgaramulu. n. plu. A species of rice. వడ్లలోభేదము. రామానుజులు or రామానుజాచార్యులు rām-ānujulu. n. The name of a certain reformer among the Vaishnavites. రామామణి vāmā-maṇi. n. The Rāmāyana, an epic poem of the Hindus, recording the adventures of Rama, the son of Dasaradha. రామార్పణముగా నిచ్చు rām-ārpaṇamu-gān-iṭsṭsu. v. a. To give a solemn donation. రామునిదాడి or రామందాడి rāmuni-dāḍi. n. Lit. Rāma's invasion. An innumerable number అసంఖ్యము. వీధిలో జనులు రామునిదాడిగా తిరుగుచున్నారు the people are going about in the streets in vast crowds.

(p. 1255) śuddhamu ṣuddhamu. [Skt.] adj. White, తెల్లని. Pure, clean, stainless, పవిత్రమైన, నిర్దోషమైన. Unmixed, unadulterated; entire, complete. Total, downright, absolute, mere. పరిష్కృతమైన. శుద్ధసంస్కృతము pure Sanskrit. శుద్ధప్రతి a faultless or true copy. శుద్ధఅబద్ధము an utter falsehood. శుద్ధలోభి a perfect miser. In music it means devoid of variations: as శుద్ధకాంభోజి the melody or theme of the Kāmbōdi air. శుద్ధక్రయము absolute sale. శుద్ధక్రయశాసనము a written instrument of absolute sale. n. Whiteness, తెలుపు. The bright lunar fortnight. శుద్ధపంచమి the fifth day of the bright lunar fortnight. శుద్ధముగా ṣuddkamu-gā. adv. Wholly, entirely, completely, uttterly. బొత్తిగా, యావత్తు శుద్దాంతము ṣuddh-āntamu. n. A harem or seraglio; the private or women's apartments in a palace. అంతఃపురము The King's wife or concubine అంతఃపురరస్త్రీ. శుద్ధి ṣud-dhi. n. Purity, cleanness, purification, పవిత్రత, నిర్మలత్వము. వాక్శుద్ధి purity of speech. హస్తకుద్ధి successful practice, as that of a skillful physician అత్మశుద్ధి or భావశుద్ధి spiritual purity, cleanness of heart. చింతమల్లెలు తెప్పించి అతనికి దేహశుద్ధి చేయించినారు they got a cane and purified his body, i.e., gave him a thrashing. శుద్ధీకరింపు ṣuddhī-karimpu. n. Cleansing, correction, emendation. పవిత్రీకరణము. శుద్ధుడు ṣud-dhuḍu. n. A pure or holy man.
