(p. 75) amṛtamu a-mritamu. [Skt.] n. Nectar, ambrosia. Water, milk, clarified butter, the residue of a sacrifice. Final emancipation from matter and absorption in the Deity. సుధ, ఉదకము, దుగ్ధము, ఘృతము, యజ్ఞశేష ద్రవ్యము, మోక్షము, (వాడుకగా) మజ్జిగ. పంచామృతములు the five nectars, namely, water, milk, curds, ghee and honey. అమృతమునకు అంటులేదు nothing can defile buttermilk. వానిది అమృతహస్తము. he has a healing hand. వానిది అమృతవాక్కు his tongue is inspired. అమృతముహూర్తము n. An auspicious hour. శుభముహూర్తము. అమృతాంధసుడు n. One whose food is ambrosia, a god. దేవత. అమృతాంశువు n. That which gives forth soft beams of light, i.e., the Moon. చంద్రుడు.

(p. 100) aṣṭa ashṭa [Skt. cf. Eng. 'Eight,' Lat. Octo.] adj. Eight.--అష్టకష్టములు The eight unpleasant circumstances liable to occur in the course of life. [Viz. దేశాంతర గమనము foreign travel, భార్యావియోగము separation from one's wife. కష్టకాలములో ప్రియబంధుదర్శనము friends and relations arriving in the time of trouble, ఎంగిలితినడము eating the leavings of others, తన, శత్రువులతో స్నేహము చేయడము courting one's enemies, పరాన్నమునకు కాచియుండడము looking for food from strangers, సభలో అప్రతిష్ఠవచ్చుట being ignorant in an assembly of wise men, దరిద్రమనుభవించడము suffering poverty.] అష్టకోణి an octagon, అష్టదిక్కులు the eight points of the compass.--అష్టదిక్పాలకులు the regents of the eight points of the compass, viz. Indra of the East, Agni of the South-east, Yama of the South, Nairriti of the South-west, Varuṇa of the West, Marut of the North-west, Kubēra of the North, and Iṣana of the South-east.--అష్టదిగ్గజములు the elephants supporting the eight corners of the earth-అష్టనగములు the eight serpents supporting the eight angles or points of the world. Their names are as follow: వాసుకి, అనంతుడు, తక్షకుడు, శంఖపాలుడు, కుళికుడు, పద్ముడు, మహాపద్ముడు, కార్కోటకుడు. అష్టవదులు a certain set of songs of eight lines in length.-అష్టపాత్రములు the eight vessels used in a sacrifice.--అష్టభాగ్యములు the eight requisites to the regal state; as రాజ్యము territory, భండారము wealth, సేన్యము an army, ఏనుగులు elephants, గుర్రములు horses, ఛత్రము an umbrella, చామరము a fly fan or whisk, ఆందోళిక a palanquin.--అష్టభోగములు the eight sources of pleasure, viz., ఇల్లు house, పరుపు bed,వస్త్రము raiment, అభరణము jewels, స్త్రీలు women, పుష్పము, flowers, గంధము perfume, తాంబూలము areca nuts and betel-leaves.--అష్టమదములు eight kinds of pride, viz., అన్నమదము luxury in food, అర్థమదము pride of wealth, స్త్రీమదము pride of lust, విద్యామదము pride of learning, కులమదము, pride of rank and family, రూపమదము pride of beauty, ఉద్యోగమదము pride of station, యౌవనమదము pride of youth.-- అష్టస్వామ్యములు the eight respects in which an absolute conveyance is made, viz., విక్రయ, దాన, వినిమయ, జల, తరు, పాషాణ, విధి, నిక్షేపములు -- అష్టాంగములు See under అంగము. సాష్టాంగదండము prostration in worship. -అష్టాపదము an eight legged dragon: a spider. అష్టావధానము See under అవధానము. అష్టైశ్వర్యములు complete comfort, every blessing, also eight attributes, viz., అణిమ, మహిమ, గరిమ, లఘిమ, ప్రాప్తి, ప్రాకామ్యము, ఈశత్వము, వశిత్వము.

(p. 194) ēkamu ēkamu. [Skt.] pron. One. adj. Sole, single, only, general, universal, uniform, combined, matchless, unequalled, chief. Joined, combined. ఏకదీక్షగా unintermittingly, incessantly. ఏకముగా all at once, unitedly. ఏకతిరగడము ceaseless roaming. అతడు ఏకరీతిని ఉండే మనిషి he is a regular or steady person. రాత్రి యేకముగా మెరిసినది it lightened incessantly all night. ఏకము చేయు ēkamu-chēyu. v. a. To make one, unite, gather together. ఏకకాలంబున at one time, simultaneously. ఏకకాలీనుడు ēka-kālīnuḍu. n. A contemporary. వారున్ను వీరున్ను ఏకకాలీనులైనందున as these men were contemporaries: ఏకకుండలుడు ēka-kuṇḍaluḍu. [lit. Having one earring] n. An epithet of Kubera. ఏకగర్భజనితులు ēka-garbha-janitulu. adj. Uterine, of the full blood. అతడున్ను నేనున్ను ఏకగర్భజనితులము గనుక as he and I are sons of the same parents or uterine brothers. ఏకగ్రీవము ēka-grīvamu. adj. Unanimous, joint. ఏకగ్రీవముగా unanimously, jointly. ఏకచక్రాధిపతి, or ఏకఛత్రాధిపతి ēka-chakrādhipati. n. A sole ruler, an absolute monarch. ఏకచింత one sole or engrossing thought or pursuit. ఏకనిష్ఠగా ēka-nishṭha-gā. adv. With a single eye or intent, resolutely, faithfully, thoroughly, downright. ఏకపత్నీవ్రతుడు ēka-patnī-vratuḍu. n. A monogamist, a man with one wife. ఏకబోగ్రామము ēka-bhōga-grāmamu. n. A village held by one owner, or tenant. ఏకమనస్కులై ēka-manaṣkulai. adv. With fixed attention, with a single heart. అందరు ఏకమైన నా మీద పడ్డారు they fell upon me in a body. ఏకవర్ణముగానున్నది it is all of one sort or colour. భువనేకసుందరి an unrivalled beauty. ఏకశిలానగరము ēka-ṣilā-nagaramu. n. (lit. One stone-town.) A town built near a single rock or hill. The Skt. translation of ఒరంగల్లు Warungul a town in the Nizam's Territories. ఏకాధిష్ఠతము ēkā-dishṭhitamu. adj. (p. 230) kaṭika or కటికి kaṭika. [Tel.] adj. Mere. quite, entire, total, downright, cruel, unfeeling, horrid. కటికపని butchery. కటికచీకటి utter or thick darkness. నిన్నంతా నేను కటికపస్తు ఉంటిని all yesterday I was absolutely starving. కటిక్కన or కటిక్కిన kaṭikkana. adv,. Sharply, smartly, without making any allowance, కటిక or కటికవాడు kaṭika n. A butcher. మాంసమమ్మువాడు.

(p. 250) karaṇamu karaṇamu. [Skt.] n. A village clerk, a writer, an accountant. వాడు కూత కరణముగాని వ్రాతకరణముకాడు he has talents for speaking but not for writing. స్థలకరణము the registrar of a district. కరణము n. Instrument, means. కొరముట్టు. An organ of sense. ఇంద్రియము. Marking or causing, as in ప్రియంకరణము endearing. స్థూలంకరణము fattening, శుభగంకరణము fortunate. కరణచతుష్టయము the mind, intellect, volition and self-consciousness. మనోబుద్ధిచిత్తాహంకారములు. కరణత్రయము thought, word and deed. మనస్సు. వాక్కు, కర్మము. త్రికరణశుద్ధిగా completely, absolutely, entirely. కరణీయము karaṇīyamu. adj. (p. 404) cakramu chakramu. [Skt.] n. A wheel. A discuss or sharp-edged plate of steel, hurled at a foe like a quoit: the thunderbolt or weapon of Vishṇu. A realm, region. రాష్ట్రము. A figure, diagram or sign in astrology. The name of a coin. The bird called చక్రవాకము. A region or division of the body. చక్రధరుడు or చక్రపాణి Vishṇu. కటి or కటిచక్రము the loins, the region of the lions. అష్టకోణచక్రము an octagon. చక్రవర్తి chakra-varti.. n. An emperor or sovereign. రారాజు, సార్వభౌముడు. చక్రవర్తిని chakra-vartini. n. An empress. సార్వభౌమురాలు. చక్రవాకము chakra-vākamu. n. The Brahminy-duck or Ruddy Casarca rotila (F.B.I.) జక్కవపక్షి. The poetical swan, always described as being in pairs, to which poets liken fair breasts. చక్రవాళము chakravāḷamu. n. A range of mountains supposed to encircle the earth. చుట్టుకొండ. చక్రవృద్ధి chakra-vṛiddhi. n. Compound interest వడ్డికివడ్డి. చక్రాంకనము or చక్రాంకితములు or చక్రాంకములు chakrānkanamu. n. Marks branded on the front of the shoulders, representing the disc and shell of Vishṇu. (It is a rite similar to absolution.) చక్రాంగము chakrāngamu. n. A swan. హంస. చక్రాంగి a female swan. చక్రి chakri. n. The discus-wielder, i.e., Vishṇu. A snake, because rolled in a ring. A potter, because using a wheel.

(p. 657) nir nir. A Sanskrit particle prefixed in words of that language and implying negation, privation, &c. This prefix varies in accordance with the rules of Sanskrit sandhi. In some cases it becomes నిష్ as నిష్ఫలమైన fruitless. When attached to a word which begins with S, it becomes నిస్, as నిస్సందేహముగా doubtlessly. When it is followed by a vowel, it remains unaltered as నిరాటంకముగా unchecked. The compounds in which this prefix is used are here put together. నిరంకుశము nir-ankuṣamu. adj. Unrestrained, free, uncontrolled, resistless. అడ్డములేని. నిరంజనము nir-anjanamu. adj. Free, void of passion or emotion, stainless. నిర్దోషమైన. నిరంతరము nir-antaramu. adj. Unchred (as a hide,) raw, sore, tender, as పచ్చిపుండు. Colloquially it means palpable, gross, downright, absolute, rank, arrant, open, unveiled, unblushing, board, coarse. పచ్చిమిరపకాయలు green chillies. పచ్చివిషము rank poison. పచ్చికస్తురి వీణె an unsunned or unbroached scent bottle. పచ్చికర్ర a green stick. పచ్చి ఒళ్లుగల convalescent. 'పచ్చిబడి యలనతని బడగొట్టుడనుచు.' Charit. i. 2223. పచ్చి నెత్తురు blood just shed. 'వచ్చుముంగిసజూచి వసుధేశపత్ని, పచ్చినెత్తురుమూతి పరికించితనదు.' Sāranga D. v. 280. పచ్చిక pachhika. (పచ్చి+కలది.) n. Grass. పచ్చగడ్డి. పచ్చికతేలేదు the grass has not brought. పచ్చికపట్టు a grassy spot, a meadow, a lawn, a green. పచ్చితేరు pachchi-tēru. v. n. To become green, పచ్చిఅగు.

(p. 698) paṭṭu paṭṭu. [Tel.] v. n. To suffice, to last. చెల్లు. To last a long time, హుకాలము చెల్లు. To begin, ప్రారంభించు. To happen, కలుగు. కలుగు. To cost. To fit or suit. To be possessed by evil spirits. To arrive, as ships. To be imbibed or absorbed, as a dye. To be held or contained. To be affected by disease or pain. v. a. Lit: To take the hand; to take to wife, to marry. చెయ్యిపట్టు to seize the hand, to ravish a female. దారమునుపట్టు, to twist a cord, నేను. గొడుగుపట్టు to hold an umbrella. కాలుపట్టు to geld. కాళ్లుపట్టు to massage or rub the legs. పగపట్టు to conceive hatred. శంఖముపట్టు to blow a conch. కత్తి సానపట్టు to set or grind a knife or razor. కంపుపట్టు to stink. చుట్టపట్టు to smoke a cigar or cheroot. పొగపట్టు to apply smoke. ఆ బొక్కలో నా చెయ్యి పట్టదు my hand will not go into the hole. తలా ఒకదారి పట్టినారు each of them went by a separate road. ఇంకా కోతపట్టలేదు the reaping has not yet been put in hand. ఆ వ్యాజ్యమును పట్టలేదు they did not admit the lawsuit. దానిగోళ్లకు గోరింటపట్టదు the colouring does not adhere to her nails. ఆ మందు ఈ రోగాన్ని పట్టలేదు the medicine has not affected this sickness. ఆ విద్యను బాగా పట్టి ఉన్నాడు he has taken well to that branch of study. గింజపట్టే సమయము the time when the grain is forming in the ear. ఇమదులో ఎవరికేమి పట్టినది who has any thing to do with this? నాలుగుదినములు పట్టును it will take four days. మనిషిపట్టేమాత్రము only large enough to admit a man. అయిదురూపాయీలు పట్టును it will cost five rupees. ముడు గజాలు పట్టును it will take three yards. మన్నెముపట్టి ఉన్నారు they betook themselves to the highlands. ఆనవాలుపట్టు or గురుతుపట్టు ānavālu-paṭṭu v. a. To identify, recognise, know again, verify. పట్టి పట్టి మాట్లాటెను he spoke in a broken manner. ఎవరినిపట్టితే వారు చెప్పుదురు ask whom you will, and they will tell you. మీరు పట్టిమాట్లాడితే ఆ పని అనుకూలమవును if you speak to the point the matter will be settled. అది నా బుద్ధికి పట్టలేదు I do not take (or comprehend) the meaning. పట్టిచెప్పితే ఆ పిల్లవానికి చదువు బాగావచ్చును if you teach him sedulously the boy will learn well. వాడు దానిని పట్టుకొని పీకులాడుచున్నాడు he is troubling himself about it. వాడు పట్టినదెల్లా బంగారమవుచు వచ్చినది whatever he touched turned to gold. ఆ కోటను పట్టుకొన్నారు they took the fort. ఆ దొంగను పట్టుకొన్నారు they apprehended the thief. నా చెయ్యి పట్టుకొన్నాడు he laid hold of my hand, or, he seized my hand. ఆ వాడుకను పట్టుకొన్నాడు he began the practice. ఒక నెల జీతము పట్టుకొన్నాడు he stopped one month's wages. చెప్పగానే పట్టుకొన్నాడు he understood me the moment I spoke. నడుము పట్టుకొన్నది my loins are strained. [పట్టు is also added to a great number of nouns, to give them a verbal signification and in such cases it takes its meaning from the noun to which it is affixed; thus:] తప్పుపట్టు to rust. ఇలుకుపట్టు to be sprained. అక్కరపట్టు to be necessary, to be required or to take interest in. కొవ్వుపట్టు to become fat. బూజుపట్టు to grow mouldy, దోవపట్టు to take a road. సత్తువపట్టు to be recovered, as strength. పట్లుపట్టు to be seized with cramp, &c. వాడు లంచము పట్టుచున్నాడు he takes bribes. వాడికి వెర్రిపట్టినది he has gone mad. నాకు చలిపట్టుచున్నది I feel cold. వాని గుణములు నీకు పట్టుపడినవి you have contracted his habits. వానపట్టినప్పుడు when rain came on. అట్లు చేయడానకు నీకేమిపట్టినది what business had you to do this? what made you do this? గడ్డిపట్టినబీళ్లు land covered with grass. వానిమీద తప్పుపట్టినారు they found fault with him. ఆ మందు నోరుపట్టినది the medicine made his mouth swell. వానికి ౛లుబు పట్టినది he has caught cold. నాకు కూరుకు పట్టినది I became drowsy. ఆ దూడ యింకా గడ్డి పట్ట లేదు the calf has not yet taken to grass. పట్టించు paṭṭinṭsu. [causal of పట్టు.] v. a. To cause to hold. To apply oil or ointment, &c. To make one begin. ఆ చిన్నవాడికి అమరము పట్టించినారు they have made him begin (reading) the Amaram. రేపు నీపని పట్టిస్తాను or నీతాళముపట్టిస్తాను I will settle your business to-morrow, i.e., I will punish you. ఆ పెట్టెను వానిచేతి పట్టించుకొనిరా make him bring the box with you. పట్టింపు paṭṭimpu. n. Application. Concern. పిల్లకాయలచేత ఒక పుస్తకము ఆరంభించడము, శ్రద్ధ, అక్కర, పాటింపు. అమరము పట్టింపు అయిన మూడు నెలలకు three months after setting to work on the Amaram. ఆరాధ్యులకు కర్మమందు పట్టింపులేదు the Aradhyas pay no attention to rites. 'లేనిపట్టింపులెల్లను పూనిచాన.' Ila. iii. 29. పట్టు paṭṭu. n. Holding, a hold. గ్రహణము, పట్టుకొనుట. A handful. Pertinacity, resolution, hold, strength, grip, grasp, seizing. గ్రహణము. An external application to a swelling to allay pain, &c. పూత. Ground, for a proceeding, కారణము. A prop; support, favor; a party or side, ఆధారము. A part of scene in a play, స్థానము, విషయము. విరహపుపట్టు an amorous scene,. యుద్ధపుపుట్టు a warlike scene. A feat in wrestling. అది తలకు పట్టు పెట్టుకొని పండుకొన్నది she put a plaster on her temples and went to bed. ఈ వ్యాజ్యములో పట్టులేదు there is no proper plea in this suit. ఒకని పట్టుగా మాట్లాడుట to speak on a man's behalf. ఒక పట్టుగానుండు to inhit pertinaciously. ఉనికిపట్టు a place, a house, an abode. వాడు పట్టినపట్టు వదలడు he will not relinquish his purpose. వాణ్ని పట్టిన పట్టున తీసుకొనివచ్చిరి they brought him as he was. పట్టుస్నానము bathing at the commencement of an eclipse, as opposed to విడుపుస్నానము bathing at its termination. ఆయన పట్టుబిడుపు తెలిసినవాడు he knows where to be lenient and where to be severe. కూతపట్టునేల as far as a cry may be heard. వారికి కర్మములో పట్టులేదు they do not lay much stress upon ceremonies. వాడు ఎంతమాత్రము పట్టు ఇవ్వకుండా మాట్లాడుచున్నాడు he speaks without giving them any handle. చాలా మంది ఆయనపట్టు అయిరి many followed him, or joined his side. పట్టున (with న the sign of the ablative) at, by, close to. కోరడి పట్టు న along the hedge. గాడీపట్టున at the manager. ఈ పట్టున at present, పట్టు feats in wrestling. కాడు జెట్టిపట్లుపట్టగలడు he is able to wrestle. ఆ చుట్టుపట్ల in the adjacent places, in the neighbourhood. చుట్టుపట్ల వాండ్లు neighbours. పట్టు paṭṭu. n. Silk. పట్టుబట్ట a silk cloth. పట్టునూలు silk thread, spun silk. పట్టునూలుపాలెవాండ్లు a class of silk weavers. పట్టునూలువాండ్లు a class of silk dyers. పట్టుపురుగు paṭṭu-purugu. n. A silkworm. Also, an insect called ఇంద్రగోపము. పట్టంచు paṭṭ-anṭsu. (పట్టు+అంచు.) n. A silk border, a border fringed or trimmed with silk. పట్టుకొమ్మ paṭṭu-komma. n. A refuge, stay, support. అధికారము, ఊతకోల. పట్టుకారు Same as పటకారు (q. v.) పట్టుకొను paṭṭu-konu. v. n. &t. To catch, to catch hold of, to seize. పట్టుకోలు paṭṭu-kōlu. n. Catching. పట్టుకొనుట. పట్టుజిట్ట paṭṭu-jiṭṭa. n. A sort of bird. S. i. 187. పట్టెడు paṭṭ-eḍu. adj. A large handful. Lit. 'as much as the hand will hold.' పట్టుజీనువు paṭṭu-jīnuvu. n. A kind of bird, పిగిలిపిట్ట. పట్టుడు paṭṭuḍu. n. Persistence, పట్టుదల. adj. Choice, select. పట్టుడువేట a first rate sheep. పట్టుడావు a picked cow or fine cow. పట్టుదల paṭṭu-dala. n. Affection, favour, Perseverance, persistence. వదలనిపట్టు, అభినివేశము. వానికి దానిమీద నిండా పట్టుదల he has a great regard for it. పట్టుబడి paṭṭu-baḍi. n. A sum received or credited in an account, the worth or coat of any thing, charges, expense, outlay. పట్టుబడు paṭṭu-baḍu. v. n. To be seized or apprehended. చిక్కుకొను. To become plain, విదితమగు. పట్టుసారువ paṭṭu-sāruva. n. A fork-like beam used to hold by while working a pikota or water-lift మీట త్రొక్కువాడు ఆధారముగా పట్టుకొనే పంగలకొయ్య. పట్లు. plu. of పట్ల paṭla. Best, supreme, most excellent, principal, chief. ఉత్కృష్టము, ప్రధానము పరమగురువు the supreme teacher. పరమపతివ్రత the most virtuous woman. పరమపతివ్రత the most virtuous woman. పరమపదము or పరంపదము parama-padamu. n. (p. 847) prāyamu prāyamu. [Skt.] n. Age, time of life, జీవితకాలము, ఈడు, వయస్సు. Puberty, youth, prime, bloom. యౌవనము. లేప్రాయము fresh age. ప్రాయపువాడు a young man. ప్రాయపుది a young woman. A preparation for dying దేహత్యాగార్థివ్రతము, ప్రాయోపదేశము. Death, చావు. Exceeding much, a multitude, సమూహము, బాహుళ్యము. adj. Fasting in order to die, starving to death voluntarily. పస్తుపడియుండి ప్రాణమును విడిచిపెట్టడమనేవ్రతము. ప్రాయోపవేశముచేయు or ప్రాణాచారముచేయు prāy-opavēṣamu-chēyu v. n. To meet death by fasting in fulfilment of a vow.

Worship of Rama, chanting or reciting the Rāmāyana. రామము rāmamu. n. A large species of deer. పెద్దదుప్పి. రామములక rāma-mulaka. n. A small plant resembling the brinjal with a white fruit. రామరామ rāma-rāma. interj. Alas! alas! రాములు rāmalu. n. plu. A sort of fish. మత్స్యభేదములు. రామవరము or రామవాక్యము rāma-varamu. n. (p. 1255) śuddhamu ṣuddhamu. [Skt.] adj. White, తెల్లని. Pure, clean, stainless, పవిత్రమైన, నిర్దోషమైన. Unmixed, unadulterated; entire, complete. Total, downright, absolute, mere. పరిష్కృతమైన. శుద్ధసంస్కృతము pure Sanskrit. శుద్ధప్రతి a faultless or true copy. శుద్ధఅబద్ధము an utter falsehood. శుద్ధలోభి a perfect miser.
