(p. 289) kundēlu kundēlu. [Tel.] n. The black-naped hare, Lepus nigricollis. (F.B.I.) చెవులపిల్లి, చెవులపోతు, శశము. కుందేటి కొమ్ము kundēṭi-kommu. n. A hare's horn, i.e., mere nothing, an absurdity. శూన్యము. కుందేటిఖండము land on which hares are found. శశవనము.

(p. 1059) r ra. [Tel. short for రమ్ము.] In addressing intimate friends or very low class persons, this is used as a suffix; thus, ఏమిర, ఎందుకుర, ఏమిరా, ఎందుకురా. In ancient Telugu, when it was under influence of the Kanarese literature the letter ఱ was used, but it is now obsolete. It is called శకటరేఫము, అలఘురేఫము or బండి 'ర' while the ర is called మంచి 'ర' or లఘురేఫము. The ర is never used in Sanskrit words. It is said to have been pronounced hard, and to have had the force of two ర sounds; so that in ఱ్ఱ there are supposed to be four R sounds included, which is absurd on the face of it. According to the ancient spelling తరచు means to churn, తఱుచు thick. పెర is a bee hive, పెర other, strange.పెరుగు is curd, పెరుగు to curd, పెఱుగు to grow. వేరు means a root, వేఱు different. మరుగు means to hide, మఱుగు too boil. In modern Telugu the ఱ is unknown and thus both sets of words are splet alike. The ancient poets distinguished these sounds, never allowing ర to rhyme with ఱ. Modern Telugu poets such as the translator of the Bhagavata disregard this distinction. In recent years attempts have been made to revive the use of this obsolete letter, but without success.

(p. 1245) śaśamu or శశకము ṣaṣamu. [Skt.] n. A hare. చెవులపిల్లి, కుందేలు. 'శశవిషాణము' (HN. i. 55.) a hare's horn, కుందేటికొమ్ము, i.e., a natural impossibility, a mere absurdity. శశధరుడు or శశి ṣaṣa-dha-ruḍu. n. An epithet of the moon, given because the figure in the moon's disc is supposed to resemble a hare. చంద్రుడు. శశాంకము ṣaṣ-ānkamu. n. Crude camphor. పచ్చకర్పూరము. 'ఖండంబుల ఘనశశాంకఖండంబులచే.'
